Master auto tech (45 years) for decades all other trades have made more than us, if you think there's a shortage now? Wait 2 years! Ain't seen nothing yet!

Dude just pay us more. I did the whole auto school thing, graduated. Applied to be ab entry level tech only to be offered minimum wage back in 2009. N in ny minimum wage was $8. So yea not doing that. I ended up just staying at the job i had while going to school and getting paid $16 at the time. So yea i literally went to automotive school only to be offered $8 bucks a hour and the job i had while attending school paid me $16. Shit is ass backwards in the industry. Service advisors people that just talk and sit on their ass all day n b on the phone get paid more than techs. Worst industry to get into. In my city i have already seen 4 auto shops closed down. Thank god i know how to work on cars due to going to auto school so it wasn't a big waste of time n money.

It barely pays more than throwing boxes at a UPS warehouse. Flat rate is a broken and exploitative system. Have to spend thousands on tools. Have to often work in inadequate shops with lack of equipment or space.

UPS just went on strike demanding A/C now I have to go get an EPA certified 609 card and buy a bunch of A/C tools for free and no A/C.If I made their money I would fix my own fucking truck for free!

Oh great now in addition to paying them crap you expect them to work weekends. I would like to know what he considers good pay and could he live on it.

Get rid of flat rate pay, the shop should buy all the test equipment and tools and pay better! I’m a Biomedical Coordinator ( repair hospital, medical equipment ). 40 years in the industry and I never ever brought my own tools or test equipment. No should thing as flat rate pay either.

I worked at a ford dealership for 10 years.
The best thing I ever did was leave and do something else. It’s not worth the stress,

I started out in my first dealer at age 19 in 1985 for 50% of the $27 an hour shop labor rate and full medical for the whole family now they are charging $240 an hour and criminally capping world class master techs at 20% or less.THAT BUSINESS IS REFRIED RAT SHIT!

Fucking Chrysler dealer in Eureka,CA charging $190 an hour trying to hire techs for $16-20 an hour. The $20 requires an AS in automotive.Minimum wage for anyone required to provide their own tools during the course of their work is twice minimum wage or $31 an hour.Tacobell across the street pays $15.50 health, tuition assistance, same day pay amd health.

Hey here’s an idea … just pay your techs a fair wage and stop being a slave driver …why should I invest 20k worth of tools and train myself .. for you to pay me a fraction of what your taking in . No a/c no heat many times.. no pension no medical … stay out of the business .. so many other great opportunities out there
