Numista lists the Pitcairn coin as "Official Collector Currency" exonumia, so it's neither a circulating coin nor a real currency. One of the coolest finds in a while though!
Pitcairn do officially issue New Zealand Dollar NIFCs, and did a series of 50p sized E.T themed coins denominated 50 cents, so these could turn up in 50p hunts in theory
whats the retail price of those coins ( and as coins is there VAT when paying over face, or it is a way of pitcarn selling £1 worth of labour and materials for £2 and getting in forex etc to its treasury ?
@highpath4776 They're sold as sets with the E.T one seemingly going for ~£35 and the Star Wars one over £50, they also don't appear to be sold by Pitcairn directly but through private coin companies. And I'm sure Disney etc take a sizable cut where their IP is being used. How much Pitcairn themselves profit I don't know, but they have a population of 42 people so you can imagine this does benefit them a fair bit, they also sell large silver coins (and even gold in the past) so there's money to be made for sure. Not sure about the VAT situation
Yes I’d say it’s classed as a medallion as Pitcairn as you state uses New Zealand Dollars as it’s currency .However they charge the likes of Westminister a fee to mint these “£2 coins” even though they’re not legally allowed too so there not “Currency “ . I think they’re touting a “£2” Euro cup coin at the moment .Just more tat ripping off unsuspecting coin collectors.
This is why I still tune into these videos. That was a crazy hunt, as a geography nerd seeing a Pitcairn find (population 50 I think?) trumps even the NI coin. Super stuff

What a fabulous hunt! Equal fewest "cases of the diddlies", 2nd highest number of commemoratives found and also the 2nd most variants, and the most sneezes in a £2 hunt video (yes, I've been counting!!) Oh, and probably the weirdest coin found to date. Great stuff! Bring on book 8.

First sensible comment. I had an English commonwealth games, and 103 coins in one bag. I done another hunt today and only had 10, but my 50p hunt, I had two Olympics, so all these bags are random and some rare coins still to be found. All good fun though going through, especially if it is a sunny day with a beer.

Yeah those Pitcairn Islands coins are just some the coin companies sell to try and make some money. Not legal tender as they use the New Zealand Dollar i believe. So these £2 and also 50p coins will never see the light on the islands themselves.
This £2 is one of the UK Bunc issues that someone has broken out of its pack to spend. Nice design though tbf

Great hunt. Han Solo £2 coin is the star find of the hunt, I think also a NIFC as well. Someone at the Royal Mint must've made the 'Disney-Star Wars' £2 coin sets, and somebody broke it out of a the set and spent it?
I think it celebrate the 100 years of Disney.

2016 Team GB Rio is approx £1.50 if you mean the 2011 Olympic Aquatics £2.00 but worth around £1,000 if it has waves going through the face. If someone was to pay that much. However, 50p all day long.

It wouldn't be circulated (or legal tender?) even in the Pitcairn Islands - the 50 odd residents there use the NZ dollar! Such a random, bizarre and amazing find.
