KORN THEN VS. NOW - Riffs From Their First Album and Last Album (2021) Riff Battle
Vložit
- čas přidán 3. 06. 2021
- Pioneers of the nu metal genre, Korn has been delivering their brand of infectious down tuned grooves since 1994. They are a band that never strayed too far from their roots, but as always, the question is old vs. new! How do their riffs stack up 25 years later?
Artist: Korn
Albums: Korn (1994) and The Nothing (2019)
Tuning: Drop A
Mixed by Richard Perdomo

Man, this has to be the closest riff battle yet.
The man is having a riff battle against himself
What a legend
Their album before this easily has some of their hardest riffs
SoS was fantastic.
And hardest vocals
SoS is my favorite Korn album
@@BMuscle mine too
Rotting In Vain...
Honestly, Korn never really lost their riff style. I think if you just made every album the same production as their first album, they would pretty much sound the same.
They have to evolve, but also maintain their essence. Which Korn has done very well. There r few exceptions, cough, cough TpoT.
Both eras here go so hard. Def a tough one.
I was gonna say Self Titled right off the bat most likely for Nostalgia reasons..but after hearing the hole video I might be leaning more twords The Nothing.
Yeah this might be the first band I've done so far where they didn't really change sound just slightly evolved
@@ThomasHogue They had to follow the Tool & Slayer route.... Evolve just enough to not piss off most of the fans... Lol
🙏 i’m a huge KoЯn Fan since 95‘ and you just made an amazing mix of some amazing riffs…great 🤘
Korn's later songs are definitely a bit more technical and complex, I've noticed. They've definitely grown a lot as song writers and musicians.
But they multiple guitar parts in the early days. (1994-1998)
I really think The Nothing is Korn’s best work. I love all of their albums but that one just feels really inspired.
@@ChrisJohnson1988 Untouchables is their Magnum opus, no question about it.
For me their best one, the most revolutionary and unique work, is Life is Peachy
Nothing can beat the first album tho. Still kicks ass & influences.
The first is their best imo. The emotion from Jonathan puts it over the top. You FELT that shit
@@wallaceshawn-zk8iwThe emotion from Jonathan on that album puts it over the top for me. You could really feel what he was putting across
Fantastic job man! As a drummer myself I love seeing you feel the rhythms inside and out.
Thanks much appreciated!
This is awesome Thomas.... Korn is a great band....
Fantastic compilation bro!
Bert
Thanks much appreciated!
@@ThomasHogue totally my pleasure :) I've added myself to your subscribers list and it would be cool when you'd check out my original, outside the box guitar work too... 😎
I would like to hear your opinion
Rock on and have a great weekend Thomas!
Bert
This really shows how Korn has grown so much. Great video man.
Korn is one of my favorite bands, thanks for the video
The groove on older stuff tho!!
Lies...Brrr
Love then and now. Good job brother
Thanks glad you liked it!
Head and Munoz are masters at making it sound like way more is going on with the guitars that what’s actually going on. One of my favorite bands and huge inspiration on why I play guitar. Cheers 🥂🍻
Definitely! Was surprised how simple some of these were when I started learning them compared to what it sounds like
Munoz???
@@Phatzoot munky lmao. Auto correct
@@ThomasHogue Munky has definitely evolved over the years... He could only do funk solos & now can play Steve Vai like solos...
Two of my favourite metal albums of all time 🤘🔥. Great video. Thank you
Oh I love old and new Korn !
Life is peachy is my absolute number 1 album but I really love the Nothing , requiem and serenity of suffering too !!
"H@rder" riff FUCKING SLAPS
I subscribed just based on this first video from you. You're an amazing performer & musician. Not sure which one is more of a compliment, but its that one.
Thank you for this video
You know how to make a man blush! Thanks for the kind words and sub
Still can't beat that intro riff to Fake imo, and intro to lies and ball tongue are really sick too. Wish you'd feature the riff fairly early on from Clown too. Think it's pretty dope. But it's the tone and thickness (distortion/down tuning or both) on that opening Fake riff I can't get enough of. Always reminds me of an angry swarm of bees. Also, helmet in the Bush has an awesome riff and is one of thier hidden gems out thier entire catolgue....Like Wake Up and Dirty from issues and Justin, Seed and Dead Bodies from FTL. Also Insane, Cold and Black Is the Soul out thier later stuff. Idiosyncrasy is different for them in a really good way.
First album has too many Riffs & Grooves to pick from!
Bro stop spitting that fire on your videos! You are going to melt my Phone 😂🤟
Dude, that tone is amazing man!🔥
Man I love their early stuff, but The Nothing is such a fantastic Album, one of their best, if not THE best they have released yet.
Agreed, same style but more evolved!
The Nothing is good. I personally really enjoyed The Serenity of Suffering
@@BMuscle Same. Apparently they're making a new album, "Requiem". Maybe it'll be good. They're single for their new song was alright. Kinda didn't really sound korny enough but it's still pretty good to listen to.
@@Kick-The-P.A. did you like forgotten?
@@johncenax Fuck yeah! At first I thought it was the NFT song but it wasn't. Still got me headbanging throughout the whole song.
Fun vid man
✨Great job man✨👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
I love Korn 🔥 yeeesss
Korn just grown adult what a nice existence ;)
That was great man 🤘
Love the old...grew up with it
Id LOVE to hear the 1st record remixed with todays stuff
Great work man!!
Thank you!
They are both so talented. They look alike too. 😲
This is cool
Bass player here, but Love yer Chops so I had to Sub ✌🤘
Once again perfect tone, perfect playing awesome video and heavy riffs !! Well done man ! Btw I just discovered your band Seven Cities Dead and it's sooo good i love it ! You should promote it on your video or at least put a link in the description so people can discover those great songs !
Thanks, that's awesome to hear! I do want to work in some more Seven Cities Dead references on this channel. I did a playthrough of Courage Under Fire about a month ago
Cant agree. They dont play dropped A but standar A. And tone is too compressed. The old sound must be much more loose and raw
bro h@rd3r hits SO FUCKING HARD
Thx for this man! Enjoyed the old riffs…in my opinion they only need to stop these poppy synthesizer sounds
You must've loved TPOT! Lol
Well , let me ask you before I give you my uneducated observations from watching you play. Which do you prefer playing? To me, these are all from Munky right? I see a level of simplicity, sophistication, and consistency in the development from one to the other. And goddamn that makes me respect that guitar player just a whole lot more. Thanks Man! Enjoy watching you play! 🙂
The simplicity definitely stood out to me while learning them. And the style is pretty similar between the two but I think the newer ones are just a little more interesting. It makes you think about how complicated isn't always better!
@@ThomasHogue is it the newer riffs themselves you actually prefer, or is it the accompanying grooves that makes it more fun to swing too? And yes, there’s mastery in simplicity. 🙂
@@Ostaralore Hard to say! Probably a combination
@@ThomasHogue Yep. Munky loves Vai, but wanted to see heavier & simpler riffs.
Not a fan of Korn but damn do I appreciate good music when I hear it, be it jazz, R&B, rock, Blues ect.
U should update this vid with Requiem. Loved that album, especially Forgotten!
I'll have to check out the new album!
@@ThomasHogue Even tho Korn is easy to play, what would be the "hardest" song to play in your opinion?
There 1st album will always be the best
so accurate and great tone!
no lol
cool
im ngl, issues and life is peachy have some of their best riffs
for example...
issues: trash (n between the 1st verse and the hook), beg for me, make me bad, somebody someone, no way, counting
life is peachy: twist, chi, swallow, good god, mr rogers, adidas (the part after the hook), ass itch
Clown and predictable had the most awesome riffs. Missed both of them :S
Cool.
All of Korn is awesome.
Did you like TPOT?
@@wallaceshawn-zk8iw I did like "The Path of Totality."
@@KhyrisEidan I liked Jon's vocals & Lyrics, but Munky got drowned out by the DJs so it's my least favorite.... 2 stars
@@wallaceshawn-zk8iw That's okay, I loved the album. A matter of opinion.
👍🏻🔥🔥🔥
The closest Ray got to David's style was in Remember Who You Are.
David was influenced by the drummer for Primus.
The first album will always be the best album because of how heavy the riffs and how the lyrics are written. It’s also written about johns life, which makes it even deeper.
A least Meth had sum use...
Should have been played on an Ibanez😄
Hi! What`s the guitar rig you use?
A Standard, not drop A
THIS dude played all songs in drop A. All one finger chords. Wrong on his part.
Self-Titled Groove done all the popularity worldwide than this awesome band earned it.
Harder is such a great riff holy shit. So hard to hear on the album version for me tho
the difference is really the drumming
Funk over Metal, my friend!
@@wallaceshawn-zk8iw haha agreed
Just FYI, Korn doesn't use drop A tuning.
Love the first album and most of there work. But this has made me the nothing alot more
Issues album, that korn tone was massive.
Production was better too.
What guitar is that
3-2
Curious as to why you're playing in drop?
Just my default, I generally only switch to standard if I need to ha
Fair enough mate :) nice video too
Best example of how they're rifts and technique are timeless and classic and good without the "numetal" connotations.
Outta respect 4 koRn _ at least be in the same tuning! A Standard not Drop A
Tuff but I would have to go "The Nothing"
Love the early hard stuff but idk man the Nothing is just catcher riffs to me, also The Nothing is a masterpiece! Loved every single song on that album, with the earlier albums I loved all of the songs besides for a few.
Do one for suicide silence ?
That would be cool! I'm adding it to the list
@@ThomasHogue I remember reading JD is on 1 of their songs!
You remind me Ken Bedene from Aborted
Young Korn feels punchy, Present Korn feels like pulling and stretching, if that makes any sense.
Your guitar tone for The Nothing it's actually so much better than the one from the actual album. Those guitars are kinda buried in the mix
cuz it's really compressed
the nothing shows the growth in korn alla more moments were korn plays notes lower on the neck lol songs that are not shown here tho
Hearing idiosyncracy it sounds a bit like got the life a bit
Cool video, but Korn plays in A standard, not drop lol
Only issue i have with the new music is how over processed and compressed it sounds
Sorry to talk drums here. Whilst Ray certainly is an exceptional drummer, I maintain David had a better groove and sound. David’s less is more approach suits the music better. David’s drumming sounds more powerful.
This is exactly how I feel. Great drummer but he does not fit in korns slow, heavy groove.
Explain what "groove" means, please.
@@lern2swim When you "feel" the music so to speak.
@@wallaceshawn-zk8iw that's not any more of an explanation than the word "groove"
@@lern2swim You'll have to come up with your own definition or look it up on Google...
korn never played in drop tune. It was always A standart
A standard is dropped one whole step down from B, which is standard on 7 strings. So, yes , it is downtuned.
@@munkATR yeah and? theyre still playing in standard A. not drop A. for example you cant play blind with drop A.
Just do the detune down a while step. Drop A Id boring
Played Shoots and Ladders wrong.
Actually this is great idea, but there is one big mistake and that mistake is tuning, because in the first album Korn using standart B tuning and in the last album they are using standart A tuning.
They not using any drop in that two albums... Please try to remember it and in next similiar video on the same band use standart tuning. ;). Now I have some last words for people who using drop: PLEASE STOP pushing drop in every fucking great bands guys like Sepultura, Soufly, Korn, Crowbar, Pantera (for example new level, or walk). Thank you :-)....
I’m pretty sure they used standard A tuning in all their albums with the exception of a few songs.
@@MarioGarcia-vz6gd yeah, I think a couple of songs from TALITM were in A# standard instead, maybe I'm misremembering though
@@MarioGarcia-vz6gd Yep
The Nothing is ok, but I don't like it as much as most people do. I like SoS better. Too melodic... not enough anger.
Can’t beat old koRn….wtf happened 🥺
I honestly can't get behind KoЯn using only the single string for their heavy parts. Takes the crunch out of it and is underwhelming. There's been a loss off groovey palm muted riffs at that.
This was no contest every riff of the nothing sounded weak and not memorable yet every riff of the first album was simple yet amazing.. although I have not really liked anything after untouchables
12 songs. 3 guitar frets 😂
did they finally go back to Metal? so tired of the dubstep garbage.
lol, that was literally 1 album 10 years ago, bro
This guy is trapped in 2011
someone hasn't escaped the early 10s
KoRn was never metal.
Ray is a great drummer but just does not fit with the guitars of korn
I don't like this band
You love it 😜
@@CosmicSpaceBaby xDDD
I fuckin hate this stupid band because it was too...
GROOVY jk
Riffs are simple and basic lol
On self titled
To me, the first album is the hardest shit they ever did. Not just the music but the emotion from JD. Their best album imo
