Maverick Hitch, Houdini Rigging

  • The Maverick Hitch can be used as a remotely releasable and easily retrievable canopy anchor. When the first branch on a tree is too high or not viable for climbing (such as a dead branch), the Maverick Hitch can be rigged and set remotely, using a throwball over that first branch. The rigging involves the use of a carabiner, specifically inserted inside the hitch so as to allow both a solid grip on the hitch as it is advanced, and (almost magically) leaving one strand of rope through the carabiner after releasing it, such that the paracord preset can be returned to its prior location, and the operation can be repeated on a future climb. This has implications for SRT climbing scenarios. See the SRT playlist for that information, as it is published. Related videos:

    Used this for my escape line when sectioning down a spar. Into my tool box of arborist knots now . Without the retrieval line of course. Love your channel.

      Excellent. I have great respect for my arborist friends. Picture me as a wide-eyed teen watching my dads buddy Willie, a master climber, as he worked the canopy on a Tautline. I learned a bunch and kept on thinking about it all these years. In general, the arborists i meet in person and show em what i do... well, that goes REALLY well. But I generally don't promote my content into online arborist channels ... too many are not open-minded enough to consider anything except what they know already. I figure that information will find its receptive audience on its own. Maybe when i get bored!

    This technique is brilliant! It eliminates the need for a pole in order to set an anchor. I'm trying to visualize how an additional, higher anchor could be set with this method once the first anchor was achieved in the climb. Thanks for a great clip!

      Many a night, I shut my eyes picturing those same kind of situations and questions, and sometimes I get an idea!

      but it does require a preset cord, or throw ball, which I often have a problem with, personally I really enjoy going into new areas with a pole and hitch climb,

      Glad to hear it. This question and scenario is likely not something I would have devised were it not for the great questions I get from my fellow climbers. Happy to help ya

    This is just what I needed. I have been really enjoying the maverick for hitch climbing, recently ran into a problem where my rope isn’t long enough for the height of the first climbable crotch on a tree that’s perfect for the spot. I was able to get a paracord pre-set into it for once I got a longer rope, but this should let me get in there much sooner! Thank you JRB

      @@jrbtcdefinitely, my first hunt on the maverick I tied it wrong and it cinched tight to where I couldn’t retrieve it, luckily it wasn’t tied in a way where it failed! Since then I’ve been practicing and can tie it without looking now.

    Friends, this video was released the same day as this SRT demonstration video, link below. Both were filmed earlier the same day... with 200 miles between shooting locations, lol. I wanted to make sure the tying details were well described because we can use it in a number of scenarios.

    Cool! Not Long and i do my First climb. I will do it on Edelrid 9.8 mm Dynamic Rope and two longhorn agile Friktion Hitches. Garda Hitch for the foot. I Hope everything will work Great. I will do it with the best friend and all so it is safely as possible…

    • @jrbtc
      @jrbtc  Před 9 měsíci +1

      Dynamic Rope just has a slightly annoying amount of stretch at the start of the climb. But once we get off the ground, it's no problem.

    • @Simon-80
      @Simon-80 Před 9 měsíci

      Yes i saw that in a video you made, where you have tested a 7.1 mm Edelrid Rope and i have this in mind. I wanted at first the ghillie Rope but in Germany no one have this in stock. Which friction Hitch would you prefer for the first climb? I have done them all and i prefer now the loghorn agile fh or maybe the 523 jrb ascender hitch in soft bridge mode but i dont know...one thing is important...tthat these Hitches gets grip and hold my 100 kg. Thousand Thanks for your good work!@@jrbtc

    So I assume the line size and carabiner don’t matter too much since it wouldn’t be used as life saving? So you can use paracord and a non load rated carabiner to pull the maverick hitch up? Do you recommend a locking carabiner?

    • @jrbtc
      @jrbtc  Před 9 měsíci +2

      In general, it's a best practice to only bring carabiners which are life safety rated, ensuring we will never get them mixed up. A locking carabiner might seem unnecessary, but it is a good idea... I have seen non locking carabiners get caught in the most unpredictable ways.

    • @jrbtc
      @jrbtc  Před 9 měsíci +2

      In addition to the carabiner inside the hitch, we might employ other rigging clips and a cord to put it up and retrieve it, and none of that needs to be very strong. It's up to you.

    @MalkavianC Před 24 dny +1

    Possibly a nonsense question but would you ever want or need to walk a ‘false crotch’ webbing loop up the tree in this way? It seems like you could, I’m just not sure what situation would warrant it, e.g., webbing holds better in some situation, etc.

    • @jrbtc
      @jrbtc  Před 20 dny

      That is a good question but I don't have a good answer. Will think about it....

  • @kennethrogers1129
    @kennethrogers1129 Před 4 měsíci +1

    I wonder if using the rigging carabiner with a pole would work ? That might be a better way to install the rope and maverick with a pole. I will have to give it a try! Might be a little noisy with two carabiners...?? have to see

    • @jrbtc
      @jrbtc  Před 4 měsíci +1

      If a pole is available, we can simply install a Maverick Hitch with the pole. It's a no metal option.

    • @kennethrogers1129
      @kennethrogers1129 Před 9 dny

      @@jrbtcagreed, but I do like using the loops, the running strands, like Houdini rigging , inserting my pole hook in the strands and through the locking loop, this keeps the hitch straight every time. I absolutely love the Mavereick hitch, seems to work better, never has jammed, with larger rope, since tying it with 11mm Sampson Predator, never had it jam, my 8 mm rope would jam sometimes. But nowdays I never send it up without the lock or retrieval cord, if all else fails, as it’s design is, it can be pulled loose of the tree.
