  • Toni Morrison, one of the nation’s most influential writers, died this week at the age of 88 from complications of pneumonia. In 1993, Morrison became the first African-American woman to receive the Nobel Prize for Literature. She also won a Pulitzer Prize in 1988 for her classic work “Beloved.” Much of Morrison’s writing focused on the Black female experience in America, and her writing style honored the rhythms of Black oral tradition. Her work was deeply concerned with race and history, especially the sin of transatlantic slavery and the potentially restorative power of community. In 2012, President Obama awarded Morrison the Presidential Medal of Freedom. We speak with three legendary writers and close friends of Toni Morrison: Angela Davis, author and activist; Nikki Giovanni, poet, activist and educator; and Sonia Sanchez, award-winning poet.

I love the way Ms .Sanchez describes "The Bluest Eye" as a first of twins testing the waters so to speak for the language and stories Ms. Morrison wanted to tell. Brilliant analogy.

As a Toni Morrison avid reader of her genius novels, she was a prolific phenomenal writer who distinctly knew how to employ language with plots, twist, turns, and familiar Black characters that celebrated the Black folklore evoking one to critical think about humanity. Her lamguage to Black people in America was succulent, opulent, wise, witty, sassy, honest, sad, celebratory, romantic, traumatic, humorous. Love Toni Morrison saged down to earth mother wit speaking voice. She was unapologetically Black, and taught Blacks in America to just be content with who God made you to be. My favorite novels were: " Beloved", " God Help The Child", " Tar Baby", " Love" and " Song Of Solomon." As a lad in Drexel University Upward Bound Program, I was introduced to Toni Morrison by a Black professor through " Tar Baby." In all honesty, I initially detested her novel because I could not comprehend what she was asserting. At that epoch as a young teenager, I ascertained her novel to be complex, difficult, and eccentric. But- isn't amazing as a evolved as a reader, Toni Morrison became my favorite Black female writer. Reading her novels were like a layered velvet cake grandmere made on Saturday for Sunday' s dinner. It was so good one had to research what ingredients were used to make the dawn cake so good. Rip Ms. Toni Morrison. Sad that you had to leavr us, but your beautiful words, books, essays, interviews, and notions will be with us eternally. Thanks for your writing and splendid spirit. You rock Sista!

I'm feeling teary as I listen to this segment...I'm sad and so thankful! I was introduced to Toni Morrison in college; as an English major, I created an independent class for myself (with the assistance of an amazing college English professor) on Black women writers and the Womanist movement. I selected a couple books of Toni Morrison's (along with books that included writings from Angela Davis, Nikki Giovanni, and Sonia Sanchez) to study and they all changed how I see myself and how I show up in the world. I read more of Morrison's books after graduation and was blown away by the power of her words and by her knowing of my experiences and feelings. I could see myself and my struggles in her books.
I am so grateful for the opportunity to hear these wonderful, powerful writers/scholars that I admire share the magic that Toni Morrison was and will continue to be. Thank you, Amy Goodman, for this tribute and for asking Davis, Giovanni, and Sanchez to share their stories of what a powerful contributor Toni Morrison was in giving blacks and black women (specifically) a voice in a literary, social, and a historical sense.

Now I know Ms. Sanchez is the friend on the other end of the telephone who Ms. Morrison thinks is drunk when she calls to tell her she won the Nobel prize for literature. The funniest anecdote from "The Pieces I AM."

Upon hearing about Ms. Morrison's passing I immediately thought of what Ms. Sanchez said at the end of the documentary "The Pieces I Am." I'm paraphrasing, "She taught us to walk upright in this world." I cried along with Ms. Sanchez because it was so true. Ms. Morrison is my Shakespeare. I can't say this any more plainly.

I agree with your specific sentiment but only want to point out it’s not from arbitrary rule following; it’s due to the fact that DN is so widely syndicated that it would’ve cut out in the middle of her sentence for any of the stations that have an automatic cut to the news or weather, eg, or a cut transition for any reason.
