Transcript:
Amaterasu, the Sun God to all of Japan, lived in the Celestial Plain. All was peaceful until Waka, a member of the Moon Tribe, arrived in the Plain in a mysterious spaceship, the Ark of Yamato, which brought more than just Waka. Then, Orochi, an 8-headed demon, suddenly attacked the Plain and killed many Celestials in the process. Amaterasu and Waka were unable to fend off Orochi as it was protected by a magical barrier. Waka was forced to flee but upon using his clairvoyant powers, Waka discovered that Orochi would be slain by a mortal. Amaterasu dragged Orochi down to the mortal realm and awaited the birth of The Chosen One.
The two ended up in Kamiki Village, where Orochi threatened to destroy the village unless a young maiden was offered as sacrifice every year. For 99 years, Amaterasu protected the villagers until finally, The Chosen One, Nagi the Swordsman, was born. When the night of sacrifice arrived, Nagi's love, Nami, was selected, and in his rage, he attacked Orochi.
Orochi bested Nagi, but Amaterasu intervened, engaging the demon in battle. Severely wounded, Amaterasu summoned the moon, transforming Nagi's sword into the powerful Tsukuyomi. Nagi defeated Orochi and carried the dying Amaterasu back to Kamiki village where she was laid to rest. Her Celestial Brush powers scattered across Japan in the form of 13 gods while the Tsukuyomi was used to seal away Orochi.
But a 100 years later, the Tsukuyomi is mysteriously removed and the village would call upon Amaterasu once more to defeat Orochi!

Actually, Shiranui was the name the village gave Amaterasu because they thought she was a curse. She is still Amaterasu even at her full power.

Chibirasu is not really technically canon as it was not made by clover studios. It also severely messed with the timeline pretty badly. I love the game but I don't fully count it as a sequel.

It's a work of art, and I personally compare it to the First Dark Souls and Bioshock in that regard

I've played through the game so I already know this. Yes, the two wolves are separate incarnations of the same God, but they were both named Amaterasu. Shiranui was a NICKNAME given by the village to the first wolf, who died. Yes, the village mistook future Ammy for past Amaterasu and called that wolf Shiranui as well.
It doesn't change the fact that the wolf was always Amataerasu. I've never played Okamiden, so I can't speak on anything in that game, I'm going by the first Okami in-game lore.

They made a mistake here. In the beginning of the game, when the moon is summoned and the wolf is injured, that is actually Shiranui, not Amaterasu. Shiranui is Amaterasu's past life.
Amaterasu IS Shiranui. Her real name is Amaterasu, but the people of the time named her 'Shiranui' because they didn't know what to call her.

Shadowflare Ishaku, Shiranui's former companion, mistakes you for Shiranui while still calling you "Ammy." Shiranui is just a name used to differentiate the incarnations.
It's funny how much people in the comment sections don't know about the rich mythology behind this game and instead think it's Naruto references, which it's not. At all. Also I have one more thing to say...FUCKING BUY THIS GAME IF YOU LIKE ZELDA OR MYTHOLOGY!
It's all the fanboys claiming it's Naruto ref when it's all original japanae mythology. Use google wisely kids and actually do some research. Also this game came out before Naruto...
@@karenb5969 Naruto came out in 1997 so I don't what are you talking about, but I agree. The way Okami used japanese mythology to tell it's story was AMAZING!
I first got this game for the Nintendo Wii and then I bought the PS4 version. The PS4 version is SO MUCH EASIER to do the brush strokes, but it is still an awesome game, no matter the platform.

*PARENTAL GUIDANCE IS ADVISED.*
*Shiranui* is the wolf that helped Nagi kill Orochi
*Isshaku* is the mite-sized companion of Shiranui
*Nagi* is the legendary warrior that killed Orochi
*Nami* is the damsel in distress
*Orochi* is an evil 8-headed snake demon that represents the 8 elements
*Amateratsu* is Shiranui's reborn counterpart
*Issun* is Amateratsu's companion and Isshaku's grandson, and still mite-sized
*Susano* is the descendant of Nagi and is rather a coward of many words and would rather drink and sleep than fight demons
*Kushi* is a sake brewer that later on gets chosen as a sacrifice to Orochi
*Orochi* is one of the main protagonists and is the same dick he was 100 years ago
*First Arc:* Susano, the descendant of Nagi, is tired of all the rumors about him. In his rage, he pulls out the sword Tsukyomi, the sword that sealed away Orochi. Orochi then rose up and granted Susano dark powers beyond all belief if he completely broke the seal binding Orochi.
Susano, scared shitless, runs away as Orochi spits darkness all over the land of Nippon. Sakuya, the Guardian Tree Sprite of Kamiki Village, summons Shiranui from his 100-year sleep, reborn into Amaterasu. Issun then appears out of Sakuya's clothing to help Amaterasu along her way to cleanse Nippon of the darkness.
Amaterasu the Sun God, along with Issun the Wandering Artist, finds the first 9 Brush Gods and constantly runs into Susano that just so happens to be following the same path as her. With quick-time events using the Celestial Brush, Susano makes his quest to kill Crimson Helm, a miniboss.
Waka, the prophet that traveled to the Celestial Plain, also appears before Amaterasu many multiple times to give her prophecies that will help her along the journey. When Amaterasu finally enters the Moon Cave (after many adventures), Susano sneaks in after Amaterasu, ready to finish what he started.
When Amaterasu successfully infiltrates the Moon Cave and bypasses the many demons, she is finally face to face with Orochi. Just when they start the fight, Susano appears to not run away from Orochi, but to actually kill him and save Kushi, the sacrifice and soon to be Orochi's dinner.
In the end of the battle, history repeats itself again from 100 years ago;
*"The warrior and the wolf get Orochi intoxicated with the 8 Purification Sake. As the demon is limp from drinking too much, the sacred wolf howls upon the skies and the warrior thrusts his sword skyward as the moon shines upon the sacred sword. The warrior then uses his newly powered sword to finish off Orochi."*
Orochi has been finally defeated as Susano delivers the final blow straight down the last Orochi head's neck. Susano marries Kushi, Nippon is saved, and all is well.

Technically though, it's correct to call the wolf that appeared 100 years ago "Amaterasu". The villagers just didnt know that was its name and gave it the name "Shiranui". I think the game just referred to Past!Amaterasu as Shiranui because it was the name that the wolf was remembered by and also to avoid any confusion. But Shiranui is still technically Amaterasu.

When this part was complete, I was like, man! what a great journey. Bit short, but wow!
Then they drop the second arc

and a whole new world (literally) was there before my eyes
Then I finished that and I was like, (phew) Japan is finally Saved
*NOPE* Then the third arc
I was like, Japan, whose cow did you beat that so many huge ass monsters are now roaming here???!!
Then!!! After the boss, I was like, *this game has more content than all CODs combined*

it was a nice reflection on all the three small games (Yes, they were really that long).

When you think about it (Iza)Nagi isn't a coward but he is pretty overestimated (as shown in parts through the spirit gate) like instead of landing on his feet when he saw (Yamata no) Orochi, he tripped and fell.
Shiranui was the name the villagers gave Ametarasu, the godess of sun, because they did not know who she was. there is no "reborn shiranui", it is "reborn ametarasu".
Okami, a game that takes like 2 years to get through from start to finish, has it's lore explained in 1 minute.
That's some kind of feat, there.

I finished it in almost 2 days and then in a second playthrough in 23 hours.... i have no life
this more is from the intro, which takes about 20 minutes to tell the story. if they were telling the story of "okami" ...then they would be fucked.

Shiranui was a name given to Ammy by the kamiki villagers. this is pointed out by ishaku, waka, and sakuya, as they all refer to her as Amaterasu upon seeing her for the first time without being told her name via issun or other characters

Shiranui was just what the people knew him as. An earth-bound version OF Amaterasu.

Actually i think shiranui is just what every one called her/him (lol) but infact it was still Amaterasu. The Amaterasu that we actually play is the reincarnation of the past amaterasu.
Yeah its the name the people gave her, since she cant communicate by herself.
(Spoiler) That is probably one of the reasons, why the prayers in the end are so powerful since the people now know who she really is as well as her real name.

yeah, as the celestials point out even then she was ameterasu-the villagers just called her shiranui cuz they were unaware she was the sun goddess.
the big reason she's always called shiranui is so the names dont become confusing with two characters named ameterasu.
Nakumare Also let's not forget to the villagers Amaterasu and Shiranui looked like normal white wolves. Only a few characters could see Amaterasu's godly form.
@@OsnosisBones only the sprites poncles, and celestials know her as the sun godess amaterasu while the villagers thought she was just a random white wolf and decided to call her shiranu since they didn't know who she was. they thought she was a familiar of orochi but even when she came back to life the villagers thought she was a wolf that looked like shiranu aka the old amaterasu.
Chuggaaconroy can tell you this in way more depth then everyone one Lores Chanel put together!!!

Sally Butter Pants you obviously missed a vital thing. Shiranui was what the villagers called the white wolf, her real name was Amaterasu. Issun and all of the spirit world know this, in the beginning when Sakuya awakens Amaterasu she never refer to her ever as "shiranui", but the goddess Amaterasu who saved the village once. Shiranui = what the people who did not know who she was called her. If you played the game you would know it was the same wolf. :/

Phosaton Empire Shiranui and Amaterasu are the same wolf. Her real name was Amaterasu, but the people of the town call him (she was a boy back then) Shiranui. Then he died, 100 years later, reincarnated into Ammy, and was released to slay demons once more.

I actually just found out this existed, like- what- five minutes ago- smth like that, I clicked this by curiosity, it’s was interesting, I might watch the serie/amine/whatever this thing is, bc it looks cool/interesting/fun.

I can't be the only one who thinks of Naruto whenever he says Amateratsu.
Also, there is an opening cutscene at the begining of Okami, that along with some certain other scenes, explains the lore very well.
Amaterasu is a female and so was "shiranui" . After the battle with the twin demons oki says that amaterasu and shiranui smell the same. They wouldn't smell alike old they were opposite sexes, despite being the same person. Okamiden pisses me off, honestly. What were they thinking when they made that atrocity?
