    This concert was 10 days before my 18th birthday. My band members chipped in and bought me a ticket and all 5 of us were there in the middle of that mass of humanity. We had a GREAT time!! The one thing this video doesn't quite convey is how incredibly LOUD the concert was. It was hot but the Coliseum sits right off the San Francisco bay, so the mild breeze kept you comfortable. The concert was kicked off by The Outlaws then Santana, and followed by L S. Those throngs of females were there for the headliner, the white hot Peter Frampton. Whose 'Frampton Comes Alive' double album was still riding high on the charts18 months after its release. Got a Hell of a sunburn that day, but it was well worth it. An incredible day of music indeed! RNB

  • @markreagan8277
    @markreagan8277 Před rokem +13

    That was the great Allen Collins in the white outfit who wrote the song when he was a teenager. Ronnie said he just couldn't write lyrics to it because of so many change ups. One day Allen had an argument with his girlfriend, who became his wife. She wrote on a napkin to him, "If I leave here tomorrow will you still remember me. When he went to practice with the band, which they practiced long hours, he showed Ronnie the note. Ronnie left to the dock and wrote the lyrics in 20 minutes. I saw the original Lynyrd Skynyrd band in March of 75. Band members I saw were: Ronnie Van Zant:vocalist, Allen Collins: guitarist, Gary Rossington: guitarist, Ed King:guitarist, Leon Wilkerson: bass guitarist, Billy Powell:piano/organ, and the hard beating Artimus Pyle:drummer.
    All the members of Lynyrd Skynyrd were perfectionist at what they did. They all worked hard, but made it look easy to give the audience a memory they wouldn't forget. Best band performance I have ever seen.

    • @markhopkins222
      @markhopkins222 Před rokem +4

      The solo was done like it is because when they were still on the bar circuit it gave Ronnie time to rest his voice because they did multiple sets in a night. It just sometimes got longer and longer. And when Ronnie gave Allen the OK he took advantage of it. Knebworth 76 is a great example. Just think all these females are Grandmoms now.

    Greatest Southern Rock Band ever. Probably the most requested encore song ever. Skynyrd was so uber talented and their story is among the most tragic in music history. You’d be hard pressed to find any music group with a 4 year window to have such an amazing catalogue of music. They raised the bar so high on stage. Free Bird guitar solo by Alan and Stevie is up there with anyone. This band was so freaking good. And, no they’re not from San Francisco. Just good old Jacksonville, Fla. React to Tuesday’s Gone,
    Call Me The Breeze, Simple Man and Sweet Home Alabama.

    This was Southern rock and I'm from the South. I saw them do this at Memorial Stadium (football) in Charlotte, NC on July 13, 1974. It was Under the Stars festival. It featured a lineup of ZZ Top, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Rare Earth, Leon Russell, Elvin Bishop, and Billy Preston. That was about 12 hours of my life I would not trade for anything! Things were different then and in many ways a lot more fun. But this is how we expected concerts to be!

    1st off. Koodos for letting this play through. I've seen people interupt the solo which should be a capital offense.
    I got into this biz after the plane crash. When The Rossington Collins Band went back out we did them in a small show case theater, ~1500 cap. I picked one of the road crew up at the airport who had been on the plane. They played Free Bird with no vocals. I don't think there was a dry eye in the house.
    In the late '70s thru the '80s I handled production on the promoter side for shows like this all the time. Stones, Dead, Who, Journey, Egales, Beach Boys, on & on. If they toured I worked with them at least once. These stadium gigs were unbelievable. Here's a link to one I worked with the Stones production team on. In my 20s & running with the big dogs...;o)

      Peter Frampton followed them. Watched his performance yesterday. He did much better than the Rolling Stones did following LS at Knebworth in '76. They refused to come out for hours till the crowd settled down!

    These were the Day on the Green concerts they had at the Oakland Colosseum. My girlfriend used to get free tickets through her work. The tickets were only like ten bucks. It would start in the morning and last all day. All headliners . Wasn’t usually that hot. Doesn’t usually get that hot in the Bay Area .

    I WAS there and it was AWESOME! That was a series of concerts called, Day on the Green, and this band was one of many for that day. No cameras, no cell phones, obviously no sunscreen. Day On The Green #6: Edgar Winter Group, Johnny Winter, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Earth Quake, [Charlie Daniels][The Winter Brothers Jam]](September 20, 1975). Although featured on the concert poster, Charlie Daniels did not perform, and the Climax Blues Band was substituted. The order of appearance on stage was Earth Quake, Climax Blues Band, Johnny Winter, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Edgar Winter, Winter Brothers Jam. Here is the complete Day on the Green concert schedule from 1973 - 1999 held at the Oakland A's stadium. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Day_on_the_Green

    You asked what other bands were at that Oakland concert in 1977. I know Peter Frampton was there because there are videos of it on CZcams. Not sure who else played on that day.

      @@SimplyTwoDudes By the way, I guess you guys heard that the last of the original members of that band died this month. Gary Rossington, the guitar player you see at the beginning playing that slide guitar, died March 15, 2023. The drummer in this video, Artimus Pyle, is still alive and kicking, but he's not technically an "original" member. But he WAS a survivor of the plane crash that killed many of the members of the band in 1977. In fact he was the only one that escaped with no broken bones. Just a lot of cuts and gashes. He was really lucky.
