  • There are more women in Australian prisons than ever before. And once they're out they're very likely to reoffend and end up back inside.
Four Corners follows three recently released women as they try to start over again on the outside.

I was a stay at home mom.... clean cut, volunteer for field trips and always hosting play dates. Then, my newest son passed away from sudden infant death syndrome. I found drugs to cope. Then, fell for a guy on charges to protect him from being convicted for drug possession. Lost my mind. Children. Freedom. Sat in jail for a year, and have since been sober. But it's really hard to be a drug felon and gain employment. I'm also now in therapy, but the lack of that in jail is alarming. You don't get rehabilitated. You just live like a homeless person and pass time. My heart goes out to those trying.

When a child is rejected and denied the allegations of molestation when confining to a parent, the very person that’s trusted, is one of the most devastating and painful things that the child can go through , it triggers something destructive in the child and is mentally and emotionally damaging for a long time, cause it’s like no one hears you so sad, hope all is well now, blessings upon all those who’ve experienced trauma ❤️

@Emma forster England is much like the USA offering drug people anything except for Jesus amazing grace to help people. Yet, in the USA many in prison get Bible studies and ask forgiveness and for Jesus to be their best friend and savior from sin, amen John chapters 3 & 10. It worked for me as a Jew, and also while working in prison i have helped over 3,000 precious people turn their life over to Jesus.

Absolutely it could not happen to anyone. There are people whether rich or poor that grow up with a moral compass that keeps them from destroying their lives. A case in point would be Thurgood Marshall. Descended from enslaved peoples on both sides of his family his father was a railroad porter, mother a teacher and he rose to become the first African American associate justice of the Supreme Court of the United States.

Of course there are people who do not do this, does it mean they are immune? No. We all have different tolerances as to how far we can be pushed, but even the strongest person can be pushed to absolute breaking point. I never in a million years thought I would do some of the things I have done, I always had pride in my morals and values, until the point that my pain overtook my pride and I stopped caring. I thought I was immune once, and I kick myself for being so ignorant. I am one of the lucky ones who was able to rebuild myself after my darkest days, I had some incredible people standing by me and supporting me in my recovery. I was able to attend University and graduate with a bachelor of psychology (with honours) and then went on to successfully complete my masters degree. I have now been working full time as a clinical psychologist for 7 years. But again, I am one of the lucky ones. My story is in relation and the defence of this young woman.
I’m 35, my best friend whom I met in junior high school, role call, confined in me only at the age of 22 that she was sexually abused at an age a little later on of 6. After examination of professional help she realised her self worth as an adult teenager and the early years of her 20’s was only of sex value towards males coz of what happened.
Her parents have no inkling to this day. From a family of religious background she wanted nothing more than to protect her parents.
In my opinion only (I’m not claiming to be right) of this video, With out question, the mother did not believe her daughter. The daughter had a coping mechanism that was destructive physically that complimented mentally.
If there was someone to blame, the people who didn’t investigate her claims thoroughly would be it.
But they could not have anticipated the truth.
Also She was born with addictive tendency. A lot of us are. We don’t know it until something horrific happens to us.
AND / OR no one believes us when we seek support and have to use what ever else is in us to survive and we pick up all sorts of abuse.
Why didn’t the father do more if he believed.
Support is crucial. Parents are crucial.
I AM pointing A finger yes, BUT not the way that’s nasty, BUT IT IS logically. I’m also saying AS PARENTS acknowledge YOUR mistake, accept responsibility and I absolutely can’t stress this enough, with all the love n kindness In the world forgive Your self. You only thought what u thought and have obviously spent the last however many years paying for it.
Not wanting to condemn ANYONE. But asking for EVERYONE to understand and recognise their part in results.

After being released from prison, I think what works against you is being on probation. In theory, they're supposed to be supportive & helpful and help ease you back into life but they don't! Instead, you're treated with suspicion and distrust, as if you're still committing crimes, or will the first chance you get. Which is why the threat of being sent back to prison is constantly dangled over your head! It would be easier if you were, because you'd be one less case load. Someone having that much power and influence over your life at their leisure is a little too much for some to handle. You're afraid to go out and live your life because you feel like someone's always looking over your shoulder, or you're doing it yourself as if something's always lurking behind, just waiting for you to trip up! It's why some even violate on purpose.
What else could someone be relied on to do in that situation when you feel set up to fail right from the start, as if it was expected of you anyway? This may sound a bit extreme and far fetched to some , but mostly to people that have never been in that situation. Those of us who have will usually tell you, thats how it really is even now!

The biggest issue is there's no early intervention. Especially when it comes to survivor's of abuse both male and female. I've worked in the criminal justice system on and off for 10 years in a variety of different capacities. Early intervention and helping people find a way out of criminality is the key. Also compassion. The justice system is based on revenge, there's hardly any rehabilitation when it comes to prison. People go in one criminal and come out another kind. I've read 100s of prisoner files and the key theme is always an event in childhood that went ignored and unchecked. Most people do not want to live in a cycle of trauma, abuse, violence and criminality but some just can't see a way out or don't know a way out. I don't understand all the sexist comments. No one is saying men don't go to prison or men don't suffer, there are 1000s of shows about male criminality. ABC take the time to interview a few women and all the sexism starts. If you actually did a bit of research about why most women end up in prison, a lot can be linked back to addiction, family violence, child abuse and trauma, very similar to males in prison, with the main difference being that males are the main ones responsible for most abuse, family violence, white collar and blue collar crime. That's not sexism, that's facts.

Everybody knows that men are, toooooooo, but you know as well as I do that we men commit more violent acts against women than they do us - by far. Yet know that there will be many women who will learn from their mistakes and just need to be given a chance to make things better, also having a home first is so important as it gives them the security, safety as this then will help them focus on the other things that everyone else is doing. What is even worse is when hospitals release patients to go live in the streets. They’re not criminals, just people who are poor and perhaps have no families. Depending upon how long they’ve been hospitalized and what for, they may have lost track or lost to death any family or friends who may have helped them. The most disgraceful thing I ever saw occurred on Veteran’s Day, (November) 1997 in NYC. The bus stopped our side the Veteran’s Hospital and a man attempted to board. He was wearing two hospital gowns, one in front, one in back, a beaten up old jacket several sizes too small, a pair of hospital issue slipper socks, and slide on style plastic shower sandals. He had a Metrocard that was expired, given him by the hospital, and a plastic bag containing two small containers of apple juice and a single slice of plastic wrapped wheat bread. He presented a paper with instructions to appear at a Veteran’s home in the Bronx on December 1st. Where he was supposed to go in-between was his problem. The driver was about to throw him out because he had no fare. A man in the front of the bus, also a veteran, paid his fare and just about everyone in the bus gave something towards food, a bed in a church run shelter, and some clothes. Otherwise, he’d have ended up right back in the hospital, under arrest, or worse, dead from exposure or violence.

It's nice to see someone not only want help...but to actually get it. Prisons are a money bag for the rich and as long as that continues we will always have over crowding along with undeserved longer than required sentences being handed out. Man or woman...break the law and you have to face the consequences, that's obvious to anyone with a brain. Did a paper on this years ago (in the US) on why women were getting harsher sentences than men for the same crime and the majority of women weren't violent (most of the men were). My conclusion was that we have male judges handing these sentences down and YES...this may come as a shocker to some of you...these male judges are sexist. Of course this wasn't the same for everyone but it was something that should be looked in to. And no, I don't hate men....quite the opposite! Not a feminist or a Liberal either. I do however...believe in statistics and that's what they were saying at the time. Might do more research on this today to see if anything has changed.

ANY WOMAN today in Australia only has to knock on the door of ANY womens shelter or church or hospital or ring the magic hotline and she will be immediately assisted ... maybe not get an immediate bed, but certainly caring counsel, and soon after some emergency financial assistance and treatment and then temporary housing to keep her legal and safe and to help her get back up again. There's only one fork in the road to ever take: the criminal choice or a knock on the door and SINCERELY ASK for help. If ya ain't ready or smart enough for that, society kindly gives you a free bed and food in jail. Take your pick. When you get out, you've got the same choices again. Repeat until cured.

Bekki seems like such a kind soul, and knows the gravity of her actions. can't say that for all crims.

My heart goes out to Donna who faces discrimination in so many areas of her life. She has no doubt cut herself off not only from friends but family as well. The government could do many things to help but should immediately organise this pretty young black woman some restorative dental work.I have never been in this womans shoes but I have had experience with having bad or missing teeth. Its hard enough for Donna to face the world and succeed in staying out of prison surely giving her a smile she can be proud of is something all tax payers would support.

Absolutely... it's a health/mental health issue. The manufacturer of meth though should carry a custodial sentence, it is poison, mind body and soul.

You should never judge anyone as you have no idea what people have been through me. But life is about choices are if you choose an illegal one then you must pay the price.

Great work so much support and resources needed even more in this day and age where woman out of prison need opportunities, a safe place to live and be happy without living on survival mode hour by hour, day to day❤ Bless.

I was surprised Bekki never say she Sorry to her parents. I Believe she will SHOW them how sorry she is, hopefully she will be successful.

She probably said sorry the first 50 times she broke into her parents home and stole from them,,, saying sorry for the same mistake means nothing if it keeps happening. , but she can show them that she can do better and get her life on track, she can't change the past but theres time to change her future and prove to herself and her family that she can become a trust worthy productive member of society. I hope she succeeds .

Wow.. can't believe all the negative comments! Its appalling to hear how nasty some people can be. Everyone has a story, & good on these ladies for being brave enough to speak publicly! Clearly they own their mistakes and bad choices.. Nobodies perfect & these ladies deserve another chance at life. Before you judge, take a good hard look in the mirror. I hope & pray these ladies have stability & are doing well with their new journey in life :)

When Prisoner Cell Block H started in 1979, there were only about 400 women in Australian jails. It's now about 4,000. That's the same number as here in the UK, even though we have nearly three times as many people.
