  • Mexico's trendiest neighborhood is Roma Norte in Mexico City, and that means it has an amazing café culture.
Coffee in Mexico is something that's been growing and we're all for it.
Colonia Roma in Mexico City is at the forefront for appreciation, snobbery, and mastery of coffee in Mexico.
The coolest thing that we've noticed about café culture in Mexico is that it's taken charge of appreciating the very coffee that's produced in the country. Specifically in regions like Chiapas, Oaxaca, and Veracruz.
Come with us as we explore just some of the best coffee spots in Mexico City.

I would like to see some videos about some more technical details about living in Mexico. For example, about getting the most convenient cellular sim or opening mexican bank account/exchanging and sending $$. For americans it might be not a big deal, but me, moving from east EU, probably even withdrawing $$ will be a big headache. Also, would be interested about some tips on ordering food online, discount shopping, getting organic produce, how shipping works, tips for renting apartment safely and more pragmatic types of videos. Because eventually, the type of videos with good picture might intrigue people to go to Mexico, but these types of videos won't be really helpful for them once they visit Mexico by themselves.

Yes, as you observed, La Roma and La Condesa are lumped together. But it's because one is the expansion zone of the other's gentrification process. So they share in common many of the same people and flavors of hipsterish-ness. It's very much like a lot of cities where successful gentrification means many early stage gentrifiers are displaced. They must move on to the next adjacent neighborhood. So in my city, Los Feliz gave way to Silverlake gave way to Echo Park--all next to each other--and all pretty much variations on the same street aesthetic. FWIW: I like Panaderia Rosetta. I bought a whole bunch of stuff from there and took it back home to share in LA!

It's also located in the center of Mexico City so it's a great place to take public transportation and to use a base for all your city travels. Even if you stayed at the Four Seasons, you wouldn't have drinkable water on tap but any hotel will have water that's clean enough for normal use. You'll just need to buy drinking water elsewhere.

I wouldn't mind seeing a video guide to "driving in Mexico for newcomers." For example I have questions like "will I be confused by the street signs and traffic signals? will I miss a stop and blast through an intersection ? will I go down a one-way street the wrong way ? will I get ticketed (or worse) for parking illegally because I don't recognize the signs? will I ruin my car by hitting a tope that I didn't see in time?" From what I hear you might need separate videos: "Driving in Mexico (outside CDMX)" and "Driving in CDMX" (a short: "don't even try?"). Also you could maybe do a separate video guide on the process of getting a rental car--finding a good deal, making sure you've got good insurance, things to be aware of, etc."
And then I know you've done tours of your own apartments but I'd like to see a guide (again for potential newcomers) such as "here's a quick tour of 2 or 3 typical AirBnB apartments plus one long-term rental we found on this Mexican site, in this range of prices (low to higher) in Roma Norte & Condesa (or other popular neighborhoods). You guys presumably have a good knowledge of current typical prices, what you can get, in what neighborhoods, and could translate that into English for those of us whose Spanish isn't quite strong enough yet to want to risk a lot of money on an apartment.
Love your videos, especially the CDMX neighborhood tours.

Serg and Tana are emblematic of what I get so annoyed about Mexico City. The whole “Mexico City is (surprisingly) rich!” vibes literally disgusts me. As an expat here, I feel like they couldn’t be more off.
Influencers like this are the reason the trio of neighborhoods (Roma, Condesa and Polanco) are so heavily saturated with bougie expats. Benito Juárez is rolling in his grave right now and Porfirio Díaz is looking down on his precious “Parisian neighborhoods.”
I just wish there was a way to eliminate the classist element of this content. Not every English speaking expat is a famous software developer. A lot of us are English teachers making enough money an hour to only pay for 1 fancy coffee with homemade nut milk.
Instead of cafe tours I would much rather see tours of fondas Mexicanas, comida callejera or anything that actually is... Mexican. Instead of cafe tours why not show the world our lovely (and much more affordable) street food culture? Why not show off all of the things in the city that are free to the public? The influencer, cafe lifestyle doesn’t appeal to many folks (largely for economic reasons). Teach viewers how to order street food in Spanish, teach people how to assert themselves at restaurants, how to ask for the check, how to use the metro, etc...
The “I only use Tesla Beat because peasant cars make me car sick” vibes from this channel are so cringe.

    • @sergtana
      @sergtana  Před 2 lety +6

"anything that is actually Mexican" is exactly the type of generalizations that we try to address with our content in a passive way. For many people, our videos are the first contact that they have to a Mexico that differs from the mainstream narrative of a country that's otherwise either a beach party destination or an unsafe poor place.
Perhaps you and many other people are not interested in coffee culture in Mexico so I don't think this video is necessarily for you.
I believe the anger stems from the fact that we are foreign. However I (serg) am also Mexican and I can tell you that reducing our country to fondas is disrespectful to the thousands of local restauranteurs, artists, and visionaries who are doing things differently to a narrow perspective of what this country should be.
I understand that we live a privileged lifestyle and we have never tried to pretend that we don't. There are many creators who are doing a wonderful job making different types of videos and we all have a shared goal of shedding Mexico under a positive light. Diversity in content reflects the diversity in lifestyles that this country offers to locals, visitors, and immigrants alike.

Austin, the beauty of CZcams is that anyone can upload their own video in their own style and share a vision of their home to the world. As an immigrant to Mexico (I’ve got feelings about the word expat) - why not share your version of CDMX if you don’t think that Serg & Tana are doing it to your liking? I love their videos and their take on the country. Although I do think that tourists should attempt to order food in Spanish, I don’t think that’s what Serg & Tana need to do.

My husband and I happen to love this channels sweet easygoing vibe. We love that they profile nice coffee shops and vegan restaurants. They are filling a niche, not every CZcamsr needs to vlog street food. We love that they show neighborhoods that their viewers might want to visit. This couple and their dog are our favorite CZcamsrs. I don’t feel that they should teach me to speak Spanish, nor do I want them to. I’m happy to learn on my own. We like some channels and others we don’t but we ❤️❤️❤️ this one. We are all free to watch the channels that best suit us. Just my two cents, for what it’s worth.

I will hazard a guess that there is room on the internet for many different types of content. Serg & Tana obviously love coffee and cafes - as do many people - so it makes sense that they would feature a side of Mexico City that they enjoy. The truth is - they do a great job! I love coffee too and really appreciate the variety that is available in CDMX and featured in these vids. I was duly marking "want to go" on my map app as the video unfolded. Besides, who said that coffee and coffee culture are not "actually" Mexican? Also, I have watched many of their videos and do not remember them ever expressing surprise or, god forbid, shock about how rich Mexico City is. Oh, and well off expats tend to congregate in the same neighbourhoods in many cities - they certainly do here in Vancouver. There are many sociological reasons for that - I don't think you can blame vloggers.
Austin, if you search on CZcams you will find many options for the type of content that you are interested in. I have seen at least three videos about how to use the metro (even a "how to" for the pass dispenser machine). I have also seen excellent videos showcasing different types of street food (and a few Netflix series including Taco Chronicles). Or you could watch horrific videos that focus on and reinforce stereotypes about Mexico (for example, if you can stomach it, check Harald Baldr and Bald and Bankrupt in Mexico last last year). Try to be positive.
