    Composer: Sergei Rachmaninoff
Artists: National Academic Choir Ukraine "Dumka",
    Yevhen Savchuk (conductor)
Rachmaninoff was not a great churchgoer, and in fact had stopped going completely by the time he composed his Vespers, and his other great a cappella work, the Liturgy of St John Chrysostom op.31. Nevertheless, he retained a love for and interest in the ecclesiastical chant, and perhaps the most famous of these, the Dies irae, appears in his First Symphony and the late Symphonic Dances of 1940.
Rachmaninoff, like his great predecessor Tchaikovsky, was very critical of his own music, but he considered the Vespers and his choral symphony The Bells among his favourites. The Vespers had to wait until 1965 for the first recording due to the Soviet anti-religion stance. Even then it was released for export only.
Russian Orthodox Church music never fails to move and stir the emotions, whether one is religious or not. Rachmaninoff ’s Vespers, like many of his most popular works, does not disappoint in its emotional impact and sincerity.

The title is incorrect. It should be All-night Vigil as the first half is Great Vespers and the second half Matins, according to Russian Orthodox liturgical practice.

    • @wakt21
      @wakt21 Před rokem +3

Your comment is completely true, but I rather think the "Vespers" title of this composition is a colloquial and casual title, with the "All-Night Vigil" being the proper, formal name.

Well said. When I post recordings for the public, I use the title that will make it easier for people who aren't steeped in period or classical music to find. The point is to help listeners new to a tradition to discover and appreciate it.

This is music that requires one to examine their heart and soul. It leads us to ask the most profound spiritual question that is required of every thoughtful human being who acknowledges that there just might be a Supreme Being that produces such an inquiry. Nothing is more imperative than this exploration that will define you. As you listen to this sacred music, note the supplication tonality and the glory that abides deeply within it.

the comments brought forth from this music take us another step towards the light , the existence of God has been the over riding question of my life and today at 57 , this alcoholic , gay , double suicide attempted , drug user is joining the Catholic church. Laughed at by even close friends but this is another step on my spiritual journey.

Who doesn't believe in the Lord Jesus Christ should repent as long as they still can. It's about our eternity. God doesn't speak for nothing what He speaks. I don't want to be in the place of those who have not accepted God's gospel of grace and die in their sins! This is not about religion, but about the way, the truth and the life.

    The generation of
    "Baby-Boomers",
    i.e., the flurry of
    procreation after
    WW2 are now in
    their 70's...
    We have never known
    war, but we listen to
    our elders who suffered
    for years, in the same
    ways Ukraine is suffering
    NOW.
    We thought people would
    have learnt that NO-ONE
    wins, in any war....😢
    It is a childish, primitive,
    savage, ignorant thing to
    do in any century....
    Some megalomaniacs
    manage to get into power,
    then probably see them-
selves as " going down in history"...
    Let us fervently hope that
    SOMEhow, this catastrophe
    may be resolved...😢😢😢
I was listening to the sublime
"All Night Vigil" , by Rachmaninov,
    crying frequently, after seeing
that the Choir was from the
    Ukraine....💕🇺🇦.
Hope they got out, to sing
    another day...
    Love from England.

@@jb6050 False-- the sacrament exists in *the church*, and there is only one, true, holy and apostolic Church, the Orthodox church. There is no cabal of satanist bishops who consecrate and abuse sacraments, much to the dismay of Roman Catholic pseudo-theologians. If you cut yourself off from the Body of Christ through schism and heresy, you lose grace. The Biblical and Patristic teachings on this are in unison and quite clear. I used to be a Roman Catholic in the scholastic world myself. I know more than your false beliefs than you do.

My dad died less than a year ago (it's 2024 as I write) and I'm listening again to the recording of the concert in which he sang (it's not the version we hear here, it's a disk that I have at home). My little dad (with whom I had a lot of relationship difficulties in my life, but I know he loved me, that's what is most important). The program notes are quite accurate and relevant in setting the context for this great composer’s often touchy relationship with the Russian Orthodox Church. One aspect of his personal life that is often politely overlooked in commentaries such as this is that Rachmaninov married his first cousin, which violated the Church’s restrictions on consanguinity. As such, Rachmaninov’s marriage could not be confirmed by an Orthodox wedding service. This self-imposed isolation obviously had a direct and lasting impact on his spiritual life.
    1. ‘Come, Let Us Worship’ - The tempo is rushed and fails to do justice to the composer’s fanfare-like conception for this setting.
    2. ‘Bless the Lord, O my soul’ - Also rushed and even a bit ragged in places (as if the director and soloist couldn’t agree on the appropriate tempo).
    3. ‘Blessed is the Man’ - Yes!! The director finally got the memo. This is an appropriately measured and respectful rendering of Rachmaninov’s richly textured choral harmonies.
    4. ‘O Serene Light’ [Phos hilaron] - Perfect. From hereon in, the renditions are on par with the best in the available discography of the ‘Vespers.’

Mr. Berezansky: You are correct; in #1, the tempo was rushed and almost resembled the choir singing notes instead of music. The conductor missed the majesty of the piece. In #2, also agree w/ your comments. Further, the conductor couldn't control the bass and tenor sections' balance, likely because he was rushing them. In my mind, for both, I was yelling at the conductor to Slow Down! Subsequent pieces were better.

For my taste, there was not enough attention to the language in this recording. There is no clear unity in vowels and pronunciation, also in the softness or accents. Partly because of that, the performance sounds pale, does not project a strong common idea. The soloist choice is not the best - voices are good, but technique and intellectual moment lack. Also, there should be a deeper understanding in znamenny chant and how it is sung to do the Vespers of Rachmaninoff, as it is based on znamenny chant and it is the key to the idea of the piece and its sound.
