This is awesome. Been a Reds fan my whole life. I was 15 when they won this series. As big of a upset as there's ever been in baseball. Still can't believe its been 30 years since this happened.

I wish I could go back in time to these days the early 90's. I was 10 years old and life was still magical. We had mom and pops video rental stores,arcades,great music,great movies that didnt overly rely on special effects. Everything was just more simple and my Reds we're on fire taking over baseball. Man those were the greatest days ever.
The postgame interview gives a glimpse of part of what made Tony LaRussa a great manager. Tim McCarver mentioned the lack of hitting as a cause of the team losing. Another manager might have said, yeah, our hitters stunk. LaRussa, his team having just been swept and probably feeling lousy, is quick to say, no, it was the whole team not doing enough. He made a point not to go on tv and blame the hitters for the loss, and they probably appreciated that.
I don't know. They had a bad season in '91 but came back in "92, Atlanta was just better. The Reds were actually better record wise in the regular season in '92 than they were in '90.
I disagree. The Reds built their roster over several years when Rose managed. All the essential players were developed in the lead up to 1990…. The talent was there and everyone in Cindy knew it.. it was only a surprise for people who didn’t follow the team.

Love Rijo, but MVP has to be either Hatcher (my first choice) or Sabo. Larkin was great. Davis was great. Bullpen was unhittable. Defense was one of the best ever. Just a perfect team that year
Michael Hurt generally if a pitcher wins two games in a series almost automatically they'll be the MVP, though the performance by Hatcher still has to be among the greatest in series history and CERTAINLY the greatest to NOT be rewarded with the MVP
I think if Hatcher got to play all of Game 4, and maybe scored another run or gotten another hit, he would've been the MVP. He damn near started every rally in that series. Dude was an absolute beast in those first 2 games.
Just watched the series again, and I had forgot how well Sabo played! He might have been the MVP if the Reds don't make the comeback in game 4 and give the win to Rijo. But no doubt it would have been Hatcher had he not been hit by that pitch and had been able to keep playing.
I hope to again one day meet C. Sabo & tell him 1) I wore Rec-Specs and 2) he won as many games as SP Rijo in this series. I’m sure he could care less on one account & cool with the other. What an amazing series he had.
Rijo was deserving… he pitched great! One could argue that his performance in game 4 was key because without Hatcher and Davis, it would’ve been interesting had the Reds lost game 4…. The A’s had a great team. They could easily have won three straight after that…. So… In any case, if not Rijo, it would have to be Hatcher…
Rus D: I was only 4, but I remember my dad got 2 tickets to the NLCS against Pittsburgh and tickets to the Bengals VS Steelers also my first NFL game , but it was the first time I went to a live Reds Game instead of watching them on big floor model Sony TV and to been able to see this amazing team play along side my dad was truly memorable. Sadly my dad passed away 2 years ago and so all I have left are the memories. It was truly amazing to see this again after all these years! So from the bottom of my heart, Thank you for posting this! Brings back great memories of that whole season! I got to see many games in person that year, and the Reds one every one of those games (including one where Davis hit a grand slam). It was only an upset to everyone that had ignored the Reds that year, as they were clearly the better team. Even though Rijo was the MVP, there were really so many players that played such a huge role in each game. It was so satisfying to see the bash brothers go down in defeat, just like they had against the Dodgers a couple of years before.

The 1990 A's stand out because they had won the AL 3x in a row, the 1989 WS and produced 103 wins + a sweep in the ALCS. The roster was stacked beyond measure. Cincy pulled off the upset in a major way.
2010 & 2011 Texas Rangers. They were unbelievably stacked with great hitters in the entire lineup and were completely shutout by San Fran pitching and clutch 9th inning hitting from St. Louis.
You can hear the bias from these two announcers, especially Jack Buck. The Reds are up 3-0, and they highlight an A's catch in 1972. Then he talks about the "roar" of the crowd. Buck was a jerk and could never bring himself to realize the Reds deserved to be there. Dewsh.
This would have been the best shot a team had to date to comeback from 0-3 if the A's had managed to pull this game out, with the two injuries to Davis and Hatcher. Hatcher's injury may not have been Series-ending had the series continued, but he may not have been the same terror at the plate he had been in the first three games, and Davis certainly would have been out for the duration. The Reds without their two top hitters very well could have squandered this series.
Jim McCracken just saying the Reds were VERY lucky to have ended it that night. They may have had serious problems if they had had to continue the series without those two. If any team was capable of overcoming that deficit, it was this Oakland team.
Winning this game was huge for the Reds after losing Hatcher and Davis to injuries. If they had lost, they might have struggled with Herm Winningham and Glenn Braggs in the lineup.
Would Hatcher's injury have been Series-ending though? Davis's certainly would have been, but I think they said Hatcher's hand was only bruised. He may have been day-to-day, maybe missed Game 5 if there had been one but could have been back in the lineup for a Game 6 if it went that far.

I don't understand why he didn't go the bullpen when Stewart was in that late inning bases loaded, nobody out jam that lead to the tying and winning runs being scored. I get that the A's bullpen had been overly worked and not terribly effective but still...
1981lashlarue I think that would have been the right move too, especially since they would need Stewart to pitch Game 7 if it got that far. But hindsight is 20-20 and they didn't think much about the third time through the order effect back then.

I readily admit I’m a Cincy fan. I went to ~20 games that season: Opening Day, some summer games, clinching the pennant when LAD lost (we were in a rain delay & it was quite the party on-field), G1 NLCS, G1 WS. Lots of fun & memories... plus King’s Island that summer lol. Besides my own personal (happy) memories, I do wonder if there was a series that was officiated worse than this one? Plz don’t misread me - I wanted Cincy to win; I just wonder about many field calls & regardless of ‘team bias’, I am more than hit or miss on the myriad Umps’ strike zones. I see variety in both directions - eg a Stewart ball now is a strike later - and haven’t bothered to be so detailed to rule on close calls... I guess my point is only this: there were a LOT of missed calls & even more bad calls in this series than I’m used to. 🤷♂️
I'd bet that LaRussa gave the order to have Hatcher plunked. Hatcher was 9 for 12 so far. The A's were desperate. Guess they should have taken more steroids.
These A's teams were good teams but classic front-runners. They had no championship heart at all. A lot of talent but too many individual egos with their own agendas so that when things started going bad ('88 WS, '90 WS, '92 ALCS) it snowballed on them instead of them coming together as a team to overcome adversity.
As I mentioned to someone else, the A's were full of themselves. They had believed the hype all season long, that they were the best team in baseball, and that no one will beat them once they make it to the WS, like it was their birthrite or something. The Reds will just roll over and play dead for us. Hell, even Tony LaRussa admitted that this was the case in his autobiography. People who had never been to an A's game in their lives were now all of a sudden huge A's fans. The bandwagon jumping that occurred out here defied description. Even the media out here in the Bay Area all went along for the ride. I mean, it was beyond sickening. Worse than what happened when the 49ers won their first SB. And they got their lunches handed to them. And after this season the A's would never really be the same. This sweep was the beginning of the end.
The A's did not play that badly. The only time they really looked bad was the 3rd inning in game 3 when the Reds just kept getting base hit after base hit - they were good clean hits but not home runs. And plunking Billy Hatcher in game 4 was just a chickenshit move. Nothing signaled their desperation like that move. They said the same thing in 76 "oh the real Yankees didn't show up". Yeah they did, and they got their asses handed to them! The Reds are 1-1 against Oakland in WS, and 1-2 against the Yankees, and 0-1 against the Orioles, 1-0 against the Red Sox, 1-0 against the Tigers, 1-0 against the White Sox. I knew how hyped the A's were in 90. But after the Reds beat them in game 2, I knew it would be a sweep. Reds were rarely bothered playing on the road in those days. Oddly enough during my lifetime the Reds never won a World Series at home. In 75 it went 7 games and ended in Boston; in 76 and 90 even numbered years it started in the NL team's home park and thanks to the sweeps, both of those final wins were on the road. In 76 Pete Rose ran in from third base like a linebacker bowling over all of the idiot Yankee fans that ran onto the field - they didn't get to have an on-field celebration. Sneak preview was after all the assholes tore up Yankee stadium after Chambliss's home run to send them to the WS. Pete and the Reds figured they wouldn't be as nice if they lost.

I readily admit I’m a Cincy fan. I went to ~20 games that season: Opening Day, some summer games, clinching the pennant when LAD lost (we were in a rain delay & it was quite the party on-field), G1 NLCS, G1 WS. Lots of fun & memories... plus King’s Island that summer lol.
Besides my own personal (happy) memories, I do wonder if there was a series that was officiated worse than this one? Plz don’t misread me - I wanted Cincy to win; I just wonder about many field calls & regardless of ‘team bias’, I am more than hit or miss on the myriad Umps’ strike zones. I see variety in both directions - eg a Stewart ball now is a strike later - and haven’t bothered to be so detailed to rule on close calls...
I guess my point is only this: there were a LOT of missed calls & even more bad calls in this series than I’m used to. 🤷♂️
I'm glad I'm not the only one to notice. If you take away the strike on the corner there's no place left but to throw it down the middle.
I'd bet that LaRussa gave the order to have Hatcher plunked. Hatcher was 9 for 12 so far. The A's were desperate. Guess they should have taken more steroids.

These A's teams were good teams but classic front-runners. They had no championship heart at all. A lot of talent but too many individual egos with their own agendas so that when things started going bad ('88 WS, '90 WS, '92 ALCS) it snowballed on them instead of them coming together as a team to overcome adversity.

As I mentioned to someone else, the A's were full of themselves. They had believed the hype all season long, that they were the best team in baseball, and that no one will beat them once they make it to the WS, like it was their birthrite or something. The Reds will just roll over and play dead for us. Hell, even Tony LaRussa admitted that this was the case in his autobiography. People who had never been to an A's game in their lives were now all of a sudden huge A's fans. The bandwagon jumping that occurred out here defied description. Even the media out here in the Bay Area all went along for the ride. I mean, it was beyond sickening. Worse than what happened when the 49ers won their first SB. And they got their lunches handed to them. And after this season the A's would never really be the same. This sweep was the beginning of the end.

As a Bay Area native, I'm glad the Athletics lost because they deserve it.

I don’t think iit was an upset, the A’s just got beat by a better team.
The A's did not play that badly. The only time they really looked bad was the 3rd inning in game 3 when the Reds just kept getting base hit after base hit - they were good clean hits but not home runs. And plunking Billy Hatcher in game 4 was just a chickenshit move. Nothing signaled their desperation like that move. They said the same thing in 76 "oh the real Yankees didn't show up". Yeah they did, and they got their asses handed to them! The Reds are 1-1 against Oakland in WS, and 1-2 against the Yankees, and 0-1 against the Orioles, 1-0 against the Red Sox, 1-0 against the Tigers, 1-0 against the White Sox.
I knew how hyped the A's were in 90. But after the Reds beat them in game 2, I knew it would be a sweep. Reds were rarely bothered playing on the road in those days. Oddly enough during my lifetime the Reds never won a World Series at home. In 75 it went 7 games and ended in Boston; in 76 and 90 even numbered years it started in the NL team's home park and thanks to the sweeps, both of those final wins were on the road. In 76 Pete Rose ran in from third base like a linebacker bowling over all of the idiot Yankee fans that ran onto the field - they didn't get to have an on-field celebration. Sneak preview was after all the assholes tore up Yankee stadium after Chambliss's home run to send them to the WS. Pete and the Reds figured they wouldn't be as nice if they lost.
