Ralph tells Alice an awful, flailing joke that he plans to recite in his Raccoon of the Year speech, then gets mad at her for not finding it funny (from The Loudspeaker).
What I love about this episode is that, even after Ralph puts her through all this nonsense, she's still behind him when he finds out he's not going to be the Grand High Exalted Mystic Ruler, with empathy and encouraging words.
I love the the hesitation and the uh ...uh..... absolutely classic. The fact he makes it so real how he keeps messing it up. Thats what makes it so great. Genius.
Yes, that's exactly what I was thinking. Sometimes you can't tell how much Gleason was adlibbing or if that was the way he was supposed to say it. Either way, it's hilarious.
I know everyone has their favorite part of this but please pleas please go back and listen to the SECOND laugh after he says the punch line He’s not on camera you just hear the laugh I can’t stop laughing….close to 55 years now
When Jackie stumbles at 1:24 that did not appear intentional to me. Audrey didn't appear to be giving him any cues showing otherwise so I could be wrong. So don't send me out on a night or a dog like this 🤣
Ralph is at his funniest when he's really stressed and desperate and enraged and embarrassed and insulted and in physical agony and mocking; when he tries to tell a joke, har har hardy har har.
Good punch line, but terrible set up. A more confident setup that shows that he knows what he's doing and where he's going would make the punch line land with a lot more punch. Ralph destroyed his joke by hemming and hawing and backtracking so many times it sounded as if he was merely rambling incoherently. As far as this scene in the Honeymooners is concerned, Jackie makes it funny by so preposterously f***ing up the joke and setting up Audrey for some witty comebacks.
Jackie was notorious for not wanting to rehearse too much but he should have spent at least a short amount of time on the joke, he really stumbles through it. But who knows if maybe that's how he wanted it to look.
It actually makes it so realistic like it's your best friend screwing up the joke. I think Jackie Gleason did it right. His performance of imperfection made Ralph Cramden endearing and indelible.
This show is still funnier than any of the television programs on today. Ralph, Ed, Alice and Trixie are timeless.
