Set in the present day, Virtual Reality is a song about human life, blissfully ignorant to our world collapsing around us. Bombarded by advertisements and call-to-actions, we, too, can have a slice of adventure - virtually, of course. Little do we realise that, one day, human life will forever be virtual, after Earth is evacuated due to runaway greenhouse effects and overpopulation. Where we exist then is unknown to us now, but the powerful will finally have permanent control.
✨ Backstory ✨
The first day I played VRchat was the day I started this song. To start off with, it was just a cheesy 80's song about being "plugged in" and "connected to computers", but the more I played multiplayer VR games with friends, the more I couldn't help but think about the "Metaverse". A dystopian, virtual future is being created before our eyes, filled with cosmetic accessories, paid for using cryptocurrencies. You could own them, too, if you'd like (...well, not really)! (If this was not immediately obvious, I am NOT in support of any of this)

As a storyteller it is hard to describe to other people the absolute *vibes* one can experience when they're in the middle of concocting a tale and some song drops that just 100% meshes with the mood and world you're trying to convey *so well* that you'd struggle to write a better one yourself. All the more potent when the song in question is just an **absolute banger** like this though.

Nice retro futurism vibe. I wonder how we'll look back on the current generation of VR in 20 or 30 years. Also, I like those bits of vocal harmony you did there. I think some vocal harmony can really add a good amount of energy to the chorus and give it some contrast to the verse at the same time. That vocoder during the verse also fit really well. I feel like it could've been utilized a bit more though. Or maybe I just like heavily processed vocals a bit too much.
Thanks! I really do hope we look back on VR positively (*without* all the crypto stuff I alluded to in the lyrics). I find it absolutely fascinating - being sucked into another world, able to speak to and interact with friends in the closest way to physical without literally meeting in person. I would totally use a vocoder sound more if I had a song made specifically to use it, in this case it was just a fun addition 😄
