Kevin Durant shuts down Draymond Green's take on Steph Curry's legacy | NBA | FIRST THINGS FIRST

  • Draymond Green shared some thoughts with Colin Cowherd on the narrative that Stephen Curry needed a Finals MVP award to validate his legacy. Green pointed out that even while Kevin Durant was on the roster, Steph was facing double teams more often than KD was, and a Finals MVP isn't going to change the impact he's had on the game. KD took to social media to say Draymond's take was 100% false, and the two had a brief back and forth on this topic. Nick Wright and Chris Broussard are joined by Antoine Walker, and they decide whether or not there was any truth to Green's take, or if KD was right to disagree.

I'm not even a Steph fan. There's an actual statistic in which the amount of double teams against both players were counted. Steph Curry was double teamed around 40 times compared to KD being doubled less than 10 times. This isn't something you have to guess about, the stat is out there. Steph is so dangerous from beyond the arc that Ty Lue didn't even want Steph to hold the ball for long. His first point was they knew teams would target Steph to double team him and or attack hi m on the pick and roll or pick and pops thus leaving others available for the shout especially KD. He also stated that Steph, this thing was feeding KD so they could win. Steph, believed KKD's greatness.
Draymound, was explaining this all the negative points people were making about Steph not scoring as much while KD was there. Draymond, stated the point and they way they scored was unselfish basketball strategy and not this Controversy People who don't understand basketball are trying portray. Your saying it as though the opposing coaches were like will live or die with KD beating us because he’s just a roll player. Double teaming Steph over KD just made more sense for the fact that KD was proven to beat double teams. Players who doubles him have to start at the 3 point area. So that’s usually guards and wings. He’s 7 foot so he’s taller than they are. He’s proven to be a well passer in those situations. So if he’s double teamed then one of the two best shooters in NBA history is open. You have no choice but to choose Curry. Better chance for a turn over. Or at least much much harder to pass it to whom ever he wants to like KD would be able to do. THE most frustrating basketball take I’ve EVER heard is the “Warriors needed KD to beat Lebron!” Takes. I think it’s so disingenuous to imply that, and yet we hear it all the time. People forget EVERYTHING had to go right for the Cavs after game 4 for them to beat the Warriors.
    - Steph was playing injured after getting hurt in the playoffs against Houston and rushing back from injury and playing through it.
    - Igoudala, the only legitimate perimeter Lebron defender, was dealing with back spasms to where he could barely walk outside of games but tried to play through it.
    - THE MOST IMPORTANT SWING FACTOR OF THE SERIES, which almost never gets mentioned, but the defensive anchor and quarterback for the team, their ONLY legitimate rim protector in Andrew Bogut was injured and out for the series in game 4 I believe. He was ALSO an essential offensive piece who they ran offence through due to his passing ability.
    - Draymond Green gets suspended for game 5, meaning now with no Bogut and Green you have literally NO ONE who can defend the rim against a team led by Lebron and Kyrie, what do you think is gonna happen?
    - Game 6 Curry fouls out with 2/3 complete phantom fouls, right when the Warriors are making a comeback and have the momentum. Ref calls were SO inexplicably shocking I’m not surprised Ayesha called it rigged.
ALL of this had to happen for Lebron and co to come back. Warriors got lucky with Cavs injuries in 2015, and the Cavs got lucky with all these situations in 2016. Honestly would have loved to see these two teams run it back sans Durant because one thing I can guarantee you is that the Cavs aren’t winning all of those finals even if the Warriors didn’t have KD.

One thing I haven't seen mentioned is maybe steph and klay were doubled because double teaming those two shorter players is probably much more effective defensively than trying to double Durant. Durant is more likely to be able to still score or find a teammate simply because he can see over the double and/or even shoot over the double team .

In the 2017 Finals, KD scored 10 more PPG on 10% better FG% and 10% better 3P%. You can say that's because Steph took all the attention away...except the 2017 Finals was easily Steph's best Finals performance. Steph averaged 22.6 PPG, 4.9 RPG and 3.7 APG on 40% shooting in the 2016 Finals. Steph averaged 26.8 PPG, 8.0 RPG and 9.4 APG on 44% in the 2017 Finals. Are we pretending that having KD on the team didn't drastically help Steph's performance? Jordan Poole, Andrea Wiggins, and Kevon Looney putting up double figures every game. As great as Steph is he isn't the only reason for the success of the warriors. Steve Kerr finds a way to get the best from every one of his players. KD would thrive and did thrive in that system under that coach.
