Hi girls, Merry Christmas from Dan in Selby, Yorkshire. Yes Castle Howard decorates each year with a different theme. I have not seen it this year so I don't know this years theme, except to say it is always magnificent. There is usually a Carol concert during the
Christmas period, but this has to be pre-booked as demand for places is high. We are experiencing a cold period (the beast from the east) so there is a little snow appearing in Yorkshire, and frost on the ground in the morning. The building on the hill, called the Temple of the Four Winds, is indeed the Howard family's mausoleum where all the deceased members are laid to rest. It is the most prominent building in the area and can be seen from miles around, whereas the house itself is a bit hidden in the hills and it comes as bit of a surprise as you approach. The fountain is the Atlas fountain, showing him holding up the globe of the world.
there are many other buildings and statues etc. scattered around the grounds which are known as 'follies' as they often have no real function or may be utilitarian structures disguised as temples etc. The purpose is to create views and give the impression of
an ancient landscape, which in fact was all created in the 18th century, when the gardener 'capability' Brown re-ordered the grounds,
building hills, damming streams to make a lake and planting thousands of trees etc. etc. so what one sees today is almost all man-made to look like 'ancient Acadia', or really an impression that the artists of the time had of the ancient world. I believe the the Castle Howard Estate comprises at least five thousand acres but it may be much more (I have not checked this but I think it about right). There used to be a real castle on a hill next to the present house, which burnt down in the 16th century, so the third Lord Howard began the new house in 1701 retaining the name castle but it really is a palace. Yorkshire is filled with similar estates though all the the houses are not quite as grand as Castle Howard many are similar but a bit smaller. Many of these estates are neighbours, in fact they continue across the whole county one after another. Most were former monastic lands given or sold by Henry XIII when he closed the monasteries down in the 1530-40's, to his friends and supporters. there had been something like
40 major monasteries and more lesser ones in Yorkshire alone, so there was much land to dispose of in this way. Some have the
actual remains of the abbeys; and castles; in their grounds, which inspired other owners to create fake ones in their own; hence the follies. Sorry that this may be a tedious read, but I thought you might like a bit of an explanation. I hope you have a very happy and peaceful Christmas and a prosperous New Year. Great video as usual ladies. Best Regards. Dan from Yorkshire.

It’s very common for country houses and castles to do this these days. There’s a privately owned Elizabethan house near us (Doddington Hall) that does the most incredible Christmas decorations. One time we went and they’d recreated the forest of Narnia on the upper floors, with fairy tales in each room downstairs. Stunning. Belvoir castle (pronounced beaver btw) has a Cinderella theme this year.

The small building they visited is often called a ‘folly’ and these are usually built just to look good in this kind of landscape at stately homes. But some, like this one, we’re also used for dining with guests and there is a small cellar hidden underneath for food preparation.

HOWEVER...there is a house in Cheshire called Tatton Park that has a couple of thousand acres and once upon a time (The Eighteenth Century, to be precise) had grounds that were 251,000 acres!!! That's almost 400 square miles of garden! Pretty much 1/3 of the entire county! Manchester Airport is built in part of what was once the garden of Tatton Park & in WWII, there was an airfield and parachute training centre in the garden!! I've had the pleasure of hosting concerts there a few times & working at the flower show & it is an incredible place...and actually, the house is not so ridiculously big that you couldn't imagine living in it!

A folly is a building with no real use other than to look picturesque. They are often built at the end of a long vista to draw the eye.

Hi Debbie and Natasha! I live not too far from Castle Howard and have been many times - the house and grounds are beautiful no matter what time of year. The whole area, North Yorkshire, is full of gems, particularly if you stray from the well-trodden tourist track. Wonderful to see your reactions to the UK in general - you'll both have a great time when you get over here.

The Howard family have lived here for generations. I think 1,000 acres are open to the public, but the estate is much larger.

My daughter works at The Alnwick Garden in Northumberland which is part of Alnwick Castle. Every year the do a light trail around the garden at Christmas. It gets better each year. Unfortunately they close the castle to visitors in the winter as the family come home.

Lovely video ladies. You two lovelies put me in the Christmas spirit even before the video you really are a tonic. A lot of stately homes in the UK do a similar thing and I've visited a few at Christmas and they are all as stunning as castle Howard. Chatsworth House which us not far from me is exquisite I would say this is the jewel of stately homes i always take my visitors here, it's my go to place especially if I want to impress any foreign guests. A very Happy Christmas to you both from Cheshire 😑🎄🎁

I'm also subscribed to Kirsten and Joerg's channel and their Christmas videos are always lovely. They sometimes make me a bit teary!

It looks like Castle Howard have a different theme every year, but I imagine they are as good as each other. I'll get there someday...when the pull of other countries diminishes enough for me to want to travel to areas in my homeland that I haven't visited yet!
