Thanks for this amazing interview, I'm thrilled to watch Oppenheimer hopefully so soon, and Inception, interstellar, and dark knight are my favorites, can't wait for the next chats
Waiting until I see Oppy tomorrow, but rankings so far…
1: Inception
2: Interstellar (his most underrated work)
3: The Dark Knight
4: Memento
5: The Prestige
EDIT: Yup. Oppenheimer is Nolan at his best.
@@AnthonyJPiccione Dunkirk also is a masterpiece...
please have an interview with cillian😊😊
@@edgarwanjala7788 it is, but he has too many damn classics lol
26:30 “The films not finished until it goes to the audience, its the audience who finishes the films”
👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
George Lucas: "It's never finished."
The prestige is a massively underrated film of his. Possibly because it came in between the first 2 batman movies. Amazing film that can be watched over and over
Totally agree. Probably his most similar to Oppenheimer given the scope of the story combined with technique and artistry.
It’s underrated but probably his 3rd worse film behind tenet and insomnia. All 3 are still great movies
The Prestige, Interstellar, and Inception are Nolan's best films. Still.
I'd love to see Christopher Nolan work with Hugh Jackman again.
@@MatthewPalancaInterstellar has a terrible storyline though. It’s so difficult to look past. But Oppenheimer is certainly one of the best films I’ve seen in years.
"RDJ as Iron Man is one of the greatest castings ever"
I totally agree with him.
why?
That whole cast of Iron Man was also filled with A-list actors at the top of their craft Robert Downey, Gwyneth Paltrow, Terrence Howard and Jeff Bridges the same style casting as Batman Begins.
Not an unpopular answer to the question what is the greatest casting decision.
The first Iron Man was very inspired...after that, RDJ was really stale in the role
Not even 5 min in and him talking about sincerity and doing the best movie you can -- THIS is why he is as esteemed as he is.
People can sense insincerity and a lack of authenticity.
So good to have real cinema in theaters
This man is a genius, easily the greatest director of our generation! I watched Oppenheimer yesterday here in Morocco and goodness me what a cinematic experience it is from the visuals, the direction to the incredible acting led by Cillian Murphy who carries the hefty weight of portraying this complex mind and psyche from the beginning to the end of the film. What I can say is that you need to watch this in theatres as it is an immensely immersive film that makes for a heavenly experience for every cinephile!
Which cinema in Morocco?
Villeneuve is better imo
@@Luke-kj1rjHe only has 2 movies in his belt to be even considered (Sicario, Dune) while Nolan has a bunch of them. Just because it's your opinion doesn't mean it's true. And don't tell me Blade Runner 2049 was peak cinema cuz it's not
@@Luke-kj1rjno he ain't lol
@@Luke-kj1rjdidn't villeneuve literally call himself "the biggest nolan fanboy" and that he "can't imagine being on the same level as chris"? even villeneuve doesn't agree
Please God he directs the next Bond film. The timing is perfect now and I can't imagine anyone else rebooting the franchise other than Nolan.
Idris and Him would be 💥💥💥💥💥💥
@@comfykeegsIf Nolan directs ne 007 Bond will be Tom Hardy
Given how studios operate, it’s hard to imagine him being given absolute freedom to write Bond in a way that we would like to without studio interference. We can dream.
@@tomiloger2910what about Robert Pattinson? If they were to go for a younger Bond, he will be a good pick
@@Blindswordsman1994 Hell no! He has no carisma what so ever. As Batman he didn't even bulk up for Batman and you want him for 007?
This has to be the best Nolan interview I've seen in a while. You've managed to get him very expressive about his answers and thank you for that! This interview is so informative and interesting like all of your interviews are, keep it up and can't wait to see the rest of your Oppenheimer interviews you have planned!
Wow, thank you!
@@JoshHorowitz Yup, great opening question too!
Agreed. 👍
Definitely! I’ve spent the past several days in the Oppenheimer black hole in the run up to the Oscars and this interview stands out!
once again Josh you have proven yourself to be one of the best journalists working in the field of Film Journalism. interviewing Nolan is nerve wracking I can imagine and you prepared inanely insightful questions.
Nolan honestly looked bored as hell. Sorry.
Honestly, I'd just throw out some completely left field shit on him.
"Let's discuss the concept of TIME."
Nolan: Awww shit. Let's go, bro. I'm thinking of making a hyper realistic movie based on Chrono Trigger, actually.
*Schala's theme kicks in*
*Earth explodes*
By far the best interview about Oppenheimer, and Nolan in general, I have seen. I particularly liked that it was free of the stock answers from the cast and director. Don't get me wrong, I've enjoyed those and felt that the answers may have been semi-scripted, but they were genuine. However, this interview elicited a lot more from-the-soul answers and truths from Christopher Nolan and made me appreciate him and his approach to filmmaking even more. Well done.
Thanks!! More Oppenheimer interviews coming soon!
I've always hated and never understood how today when you say Christopher Nolan is one of your favorite filmmakers you get called a “Nolan fanboy” or “film bro”. You’re opinion on his filmmaking aside, you can’t dismiss the fact that has consistently made films that everybody knows, everybody talks about, and will continue to talk about forever. Why wouldn’t I be a fan and admire one of our greatest and most iconic filmmakers? Josh giving us the golden interviews per usual 🫡
If someone refers to somebody else has a film bro, they are a film bro. I've never heard that said by anyone other than someone who has a shallow and limited understanding or appreciation for film which is ironic.
I think it just stems for pure jealousy honestly. There isn't a single filmmaker right now whose name draws audiences in droves. at the screening I attended I saw many Gen z peeps dressed in suits raving about the experience. Unfortunately, any other film maker whether that is Tarantino, Scorsese, Ridley, Fincher, etc do not have international appeal. The key here is international appeal, I'm from Pakistan and I drove to another city 5 hours away with 7 friends just to watch the film in IMAX. The theatres here sold out with 1 hour of opening advance bookings. This is not to say that other great film makers aren't making great films but that their films aren't resonating with audiences particularly younger ones.
@25:20 This was smart of Nolan to know how the entertainment news cycle works these days. He knew clickbait headlines with his take on the new Batman would overshadow news about Oppenheimer
yes... and i love Josh has a interviewer and overall the conversation was great, but those moments, like the Batman or Bond question, take away a bit from what he did with the interview. there was no necesity for the clickbaity questions
The man avoided an entire month of seeing "Nolan had THIS to say about The Batman." Good for him.
I'm not an expert on body language but the most Nolan moves in this interview is when Bond gets brought up.
Oppenheimer is, to put it simply, an epic masterpiece of highly epic and profound moments. Everything is firing on all cylinders and this movie flies by and is highly captivating and I didn't want it to end. It is one of Nolan's top films, for sure.
What makes this interview a classic is that is the questions were off script and therefore his answers were thoughtful and surprising, as he was surprised.
Finally got to see Oppenheimer - and it’s easily my favorite of Christopher’s films. Visceral, emotional, haunting, humanizing, mesmerizing, complicated, nuanced and authentic. A true and genuine masterpiece and master class of filmmaking and story telling. 👏 👏 👏
Greatest filmmaker alive and a joy to listen to.
Ummm... Scorsese is alive

He's gotta be one of the best people to interview. Extremely insightful and generous with his answers.
Definitely insightful, but I'm not sure his answers were what I'd call generous. He dodged, and immediately dismissed, quite a few questions that could've been interesting. Still, it was a job well done by Josh, in my opinion.
@@BoomSlang001wtf are you talking about
@@danwhite9184 Was it unclear? The podcast episode with Nolan.
@@BoomSlang001he answered everything and gave long answers too. The only thing he dodged was The Batman question and it’s no surprise why.
Man, every time I see Nolan in an interview I just become a bigger fan. I would LOVE to see him take on a Bond film with Henry Cavill as his James Bond. Probably won’t ever happen but that would be something special.
Cavill would have been perfect but if you look at all the Bond actors, none of them were as popular as Cavill when they were hired to play Bond. They become popular after doing Bond. So I’m guessing Cavill is too popular to be Bond now, the directors are afraid that people who will watch Cavill play Bond will always have Superman/The Witcher in their mind while watching the movie.
@@ray.b.75 Nolan made Tommy Shelby into Oppenheimer. I think he'll manage.
Cavill will never be Bond. Time to get over it lol.
Cavill as Bond is the singlehandedly the vilest thing that's ever been suggested. JFC.
@@vacc1001I mean, not even close.
If it wasn't evident to everyone before this film it should be now, Downey doesn't act for the $ or the fame, he acts purely for the love of acting, of collaboration & discovery & entertaining.
lol yes the hundreds of millions of dollars he made playing cape trash was for the pure love of the art
@@Dr_Jim57😂iron man doesn’t have a cape moron
Nolan seems so shy but damn theres a reason why I get so excited when I find out he's making a movie, any movie he makes or anything is just amazing
I really liked the questions that allowed nolan to articulate with detail and perception. This was a proper interview done by a cinephile for cinephiles. I learnt so much watching this!
A blu-ray release of The following has me so excited. Best news of the interview for me. Modern master of film.
The criterion already has one
No matter what genre sci-fi, historical, superhero or neo-noir thriller he nails it! If anyone can take a period film and turn it into an interesting million dollar blockbuster it's Christopher Nolan.🎬
Thank you, Nolan, for this unforgettable cinematic experience l.
I’ve never seen Josh do a bad interview! You can tell he really loves film
thanks for such a thoughtful interview josh
Thank you for this interview; it was a wonderful conversation.
Great interview! Thanks for posting!
God this was great. Thanks so much Josh!
This is Gold. Good job bringing Christopher Nolan. He is a filmmaker Masterpiece.
I genuinely could listen to Nolan explain his craft all day. Great interview.
Happy Birthday mr. Nolan
Excellent interview; insightful and informative. Best I’ve seen so far of Chris Nolan for Oppenheimer. Well done!
Have been waiting for this one!
best 'nolan oppenheimer interview' . great questions! thanks josh
Christopher Nolan's work is so meticulous and beautiful and explosive. It's so cool to hear an interview with him about his creative process with someone who is respectful and knowledgeable about his career.
The modern day Kubrick
Nobody watches Kubrick's films twice....hardly any repeat value
Might be one of the best Nolan interviews. Great job!
Wow, thanks!
Great questions. Excellent interview.
Thanks for video chapters!
I was surprised at how this movie managed to condense such a complicated story in such a clear way. It didn’t even feel long.
Josh Horowitz Your interviewing is a breath of fresh air as your questions are totally relevant and engaging, great in depth knowledge of your interviewee and their work, you don't present yourself, concentrating on the person with whom you are conversing. I love you as an interviewer. Thank you for the great info you got out of Chris Nolan - it looks so effortless - deceptively so!!
Really enjoyed watching this, not seen the channel before but appreciated the thoughtful questions
Welcome!
Get Nolan to do a Bond trilogy set in the 1960s. It would be fantastic.
Nice interview - even better to hear him mention Waterland - just picked it up a few weeks back, even more interested in it now!
great conversation
Exceptional interview. Great work!
Much appreciated!
I’ve seen all Nolan interviews by now, this one is by far the most informative, you asked him some very important questions that I’ve always wanted to ask him. Unlike other interviewers, repeating previously answered questions. Thank You!
Much appreciated!
Nolan is one of the few true superstar directors. There are certain films of his that landed better than others for me, but one thing is certain, his movies are a cultural event and that's not very common nowadays.
Great Interview
thank you for the video❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Great interview Josh, will go down as one of the all time best with Christopher Nolan. Well done!
Thank you🙏💕
What a great show. This was an eye opener for an indie film maker like myself.
How can you not root for this man just so intelligent
Great interview. Please increase volume next time around
Oh.. wonderful and amazing picture. Never will forget this cinema till my end.
Always nice to hear praise for Alien 3. I love that film
Best interview I have seen of Chris. Thank you Josh for the same.
thanks so much!
Happy birthday to him 😁
20:15 I’m genuinely interested in having him react to IMAX sequences from other directors like Michael Bay’s Transformers 2, JJ Abrams’ Star Trek Into Darkness, or even Jordan Peele’s Nope lol
All IMAX seats were sold out on weekends since it’s release in singapore….gonna see this incredible movie again soon….
Imagine if Christopher Nolan Directed James Bond movie. That will be so crazy.!! ❤
40 minutes?! Damn you had him forever in the media day.

This genius keeps saving film.
An absolute legend xx 💕
This is the Bomb!
i am so exited about watching the movie
Such a fascinating person. Woukd love to meet him and just have a beer and talk about movies. Him and Tarantino.
Regarding the best trailers - highly recommend Kubrick’s the Shining theatrical trailer 1980. Absolutely brilliant, simple, chilling
He is my #1 favourite director . Whenever he releases new movie I buy a ticket right away just because of his name.
very freakin good questions thanks gosh
Thanks!!
This man is a god of cinema!
imagine being Cillian Murphy and hearing the most legendary film maker ever saying that you're one of the best actors that has ever existed
He's quite to right about that!
He certainly is ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Hearing Chris refer to Tarantino as "Quentin" felt surreal.
And he's right about what he said. If Tarantino sticks to his word, that would be an incredible feat of self restraint.
When you're a creative you're never at ease if you're not out there creating
I agree it’s frustrating. I do it on a case by case basis. If I have a Criterion blu ray with quality visuals and all the extras I won’t go for a 4K. But if it’s an older movie I love that is out on 4K and I know the look and sound is going to be a major upgrade, I don’t mind spending the money. I also try to wait until there’s a big sale like the recent Prime Day to get 4Ks of movies I already own on blu ray. Sometimes the prices are so low it’s worth it
It's all about taking the audience through it
Yes need him to make a bond movie
Fox's 1979 "Alien" trailer is indeed probably the greatest trailer ever made.

WHERE ARE ALL THE SETS FROM CHRISTOPHER NOLAN'S FILMS? This would be the coolest attraction in the world! Imagine: riding on the Endurance spacecraft or the Interstellar planes, visiting Cooper's house, hanging in the Tesseract like the main character, driving the Batmobile and having a drink in its cave, walking through the spinning room in Inception, strolling through the town of Oppenheimer. Just imagine. Where is all of this?
Christopher Nolan doesn't need to direct a Bond film, he has this grand vision of storytelling, and it seems to me that doing a Bond movie with it's typical Bond formula would be too claustrophobic and constraining. The Bond producers are very strict with their IP and they know that the audiences have come to expect a consistent formula where Bond has a big opening scene, the main theme song over the credits, then the bad guy is introduced, then Bond gets his orders from M, gadgets from Q, and then he flies from one exotic place to another, bedding one girl after another, and saves the world at the end. It's too much of a straitjacket for Nolan.
Yeah I agree. I think he already tried to do his own James Bond movie with Tenet.
I will always say my favourite Nolan film is the next new release. In reality I have been with him on his cinematic journey since Memento.
He just has a visually stunning way of making films that I find quite mesmerising , let alone being a pioneering champion of IMAX 70mm. The quality of his work is of such a high standard it is impossible to pick a favourite.
Yes, when I see Christopher Nolan's name on a film. I know it was well-made.
Wow, nolan likes alien 3?! He never ceases to amaze me
Am I the only one who, while listening to this excellent interview, it sounded like Christopher Nolan was speaking with RDJ’s voice twin?
he should do a supernatural/horror movie. His own "Shining" so to say.
His great director in are time the best generation great 👍 best film I have to say great 👍 all the actors are great most of all cillen
lowkey happy they are on strike so Nolan has to push the movie over the final week like this slick interview!
Sung Kang (Han) :
“It’s super validating when you get validation from your peers,” Kang said. “The irony of the ‘Fast’ movies is that they were supposed to be B-movies at first, and now we have Oscar winners like Helen Mirren and Charlize Theron coming to play with us. And Christopher Nolan, a filmmaker like that, his statement gives you insight that the guy is a true film lover.”
Нолана можно слушать и всегда узнавать что нибудь интересное!
I hope Nolan does horror. It's a genre of movie that is so difficult to get right.
It may never happen but I hope it does
Good on Nolan for not diving into the Reeves question.
They shouldn't reboot the franchise. They should do as in the last chapter of the book: You Only Live Twice. Where Bond seems to have died, but it is revealed that he survived and lost his memory, he impregnates a Japanese woman and goes to the Soviet Union to recover his memory, leaving her pregnant without ever having met his daughter. The next book: The Man Whith The Golden Gun starts with M answering the phone and someone pretending to be James Bond, several had called, showing that James Bond was famous. This story could be mixed with the book: From Russia Whith Love, Which has a fanciful beginning full of suspense, despite being Ian Fleming's most plausible book. James Bond only appears in the middle of the book and almost dies at the end. This book was read by JFK who had a conversation with Ian Fleming shortly before creating the CIA and presented him with a revolver "for special services".
Let this man direct Bond!
I don’t know how any other film will EVER top Oppenheimer 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Sincerity is the fundamental ingredient in a film. A recent example is the Flash
