  • In this short film, I take you along with me during a summer hike out to an Alaskan glacier and give you a virtual adventure tour of this wild place. Set to original music.
    The Lake George Glacier is one of large ice fields in the Chugach Mountains of Alaska. I've explored this area a number of times over the years, and it's always an amazing sight to behold. During this summer's visit, I was struck at how much the glacier has receded in a very short time frame. Three years ago, I was able to walk right out on the ice, but now, the edge of the ice lies hundreds of feet away from the surrounding hillsides and it's much lower in elevation.
    Check out this blog post to see the dramatic difference in the ice levels compared to a few years ago: danbaileyphoto.com/blog/hikin...
    Most of the footage in this video was shot with the FUJIFILM X-T3 camera - bhpho.to/2OtBndb and the FUJFILM X100V - tinyurl.com/y3wvzf76. Read my full review of the X100V here: danbaileyphoto.com/blog/first...
    The original music in this video was recorded in Logic Pro X and the guitar solo as played on my sunburst Les Paul through IK Multimedia Amplitube software.

    Great contrast to your film with your plane in winter, having to clear the ice and snow and photographing the mountains with their beautiful colors.

      Pat, thanks for your comment. Yes, it's so much easier and faster to get up in the air during the summer months. Winter flying is very laborious, but it's usually worth the extra effort. Summer flying is just fun and I'm able to land and go hiking!

    A great film Dan. Views were almost monochromatic save for the blues of the ice. The glacier reminded me of my visit to Briksdal glacier in Norway, must dig out my slides again, it was that long ago. Oops just remembered it was 1964 on a motorcycle trip I did when in my late teens 😄

    Dan,
    My name is DJ and I live in Palmer. I've been wanting to get to Inner Lake George for about a decade now but haven't had the chance. Is it possible to hike the entire distance from the Jim Creek rec center? I realize it would be about 25-30 miles one-way and plan to stay the night, or two. I've been in the area on ATV, but never to Lake George. Is it walkable? Or do I need to figure out some other way?
    Thank you for your advice!

    • @DanBaileyPhoto
      @DanBaileyPhoto  Před 5 měsíci

      Hey there - In the summer time, it is not possible to hike or ATV from Jim Creek out Knik Glacier or Inner Lake George. There's simply too much open water. In the winter, it might be possible, depending on the year. In past years, it hasn't been doable, but last year, there was a passable trail that was put in by snow machines all the way to Lake George. We rode nearly the entire way out on our fat bikes. I haven't been out there this year yet, so I don't know what it looks like right now. If you do go out on foot, I would recommend skis over hiking.

    • @DanBaileyPhoto
      @DanBaileyPhoto  Před 3 lety +1

      Yes, that's my little yellow 1947 Cessna 120. It's a fun little bird. Gets me to some pretty cool places! It's not too cold here in the summertime, but I suppose that's a matter of perspective. 😂

    • @mixeddrinks8100
      @mixeddrinks8100 Před 3 lety +1

      @@DanBaileyPhoto yep matter of perspective, it rarely gets colder than 39F and that is only in the middle of the night. I have to get at least 4000 feet higher to see snow around here. I remember going to a friend's wedding in Banff, and the bride was wearing a wedding dress only, and a few of us had heavy coats over our tux and still shivering.

    • @DanBaileyPhoto
      @DanBaileyPhoto  Před 3 lety

      You're right, it's all perspective. When it gets to be 70 degrees here, we all start complaining that it's too hot. When it starts getting down to 30 degrees in October, we think it's getting pretty cold. By February, if it gets up to 30, we're all like "Weeeee!! Time to shed the heavy coat, Spring is here!!" 😂
