  • Klemperer's Brahms and Celibidache's Bruckner--two iconic boxes if ever there were any; but just look at what Warner is doing with them!

I've heard the new Celi Bruckner box will take up 389 discs.

Who else has paused at around 3.44 and then spent ages trying to work out what's on Dave's shelves LOL.

And yet they can’t seem to put Bertini’s Mahler back in print 🙄

    1. The "new" Klemperer box contains the Violin Concerto (with David Ojkstrach I guess).
    2. The "new" Celibidache Bruckner box contains nothing new, It is exactly the same what David showed but the reason why the edition costs so much money Is on the Warner's side: this Is a SACD edition: 12 SACD discs in a "new"box.

That Klemperer Brahms box at least is well worth having and reasonably priced.

I bought Celibidache’s 49 CDs of ‘longevity’ and find him very interesting. Agreed, the choral music conveys no international standard and there’s not much in it for me. But the orchestral works are not only interesting because of the wonderful textures and beautifully balanced harmonies that you can hear clearly, there’s also a kind of friendliness in the music that is very hard to find elsewhere.

To be honest it kinda makes sense that the Bruckner is more expensive than the complete edition, because you don't want to listen to the rest anyway so you pay to save up some space.

The Klemperer German Requiem is an absolute masterpiece.

Yes, all need those Kelm/Brahms. I have an even older set. Great stuff.

Far be it for me to find a method to their madness, but the Brahms is being released with original covers, and the Celi Bruckner is being released on SACD, so presumably remastered in multi-channel sound...

Yes, SACD for Bruckner Celi. And the remastered Brahms (taken from the big box). But yeah, whatever… I’m with you Dave!

The new Celibidache Bruckner box will be SACD's Whether we consider that a significant inticement is a matter of individual opinion. Secondly, a few of the Munich Bruckers were released on SACD in Japan. They were stated to be different performances than the ones in the previous box, and some critics regarded them to be superior. These are two reasons why someone may be attracted to the new box. That leaves the issue of price. Yes, it is outrageous, as the prices of most SACD boxes coming from Japan are. Let us hope "Amazon price protection" brings down the price when the box is actually released.

Thanks for your comment - I kind of added a duplicate comment, since for some reason I missed this. Not sure why Dave missed the fact that this is a SACD box... It does rub me the wrong way when people miss something crucial then go on like it's not their fault that nothing makes sense... that said, I like Dave and agree with him more often than not... So not every video can be a winner! :D He still great

Dave, you described exactly why I do a streaming subscription (several, actually). I would love to collect CDs and vinyl, but I don’t have the space or the $$$! 😉

Amazingly, I did not use my opportunities to jump on Klemperer's earlier Brahms collection - and opted against the complete recordings, as I had already so many by him otherwise. So I might imagine Warner is reissuing this edition nicely packed (and maybe remastered) especially for me! :)
As for the big "Celi in a cube", it fell into my lap for a meager 50 Euros (!) one day, where one of the European Amazon warehouses must have been cleaning its shelves. Even though I kind of like only about half of the contents, it is still one of the bargains to brag about. :) It is always a good strategy to wait it out a bit, especially as new releases appear (always overpriced), since in a year or so - sometimes for no obvious reason - you can get a third, or as in my example, even half of the original price off. The good and must-have releases are different of course, as it would be wild to risk missing out as stocks start to dwindle; but for those you feel lukewarm about... everything has the "right" price!

Err... WELL.... The new Celi Bruckner release is gonna be in the form of HYBRID SACDs. Now, whether you agree that matters or doubt that SACD is really objectively better... that is a different discussion. Point is that SACDs are slightly more expensive to manufacture and are traditionally more expensive in retail than CDs. Maybe it doesn't make sense to break out the Bruckner part of the box and release that way... Sure. Point is that there IS a reason why this is more expensive... Or in other words, maybe this release is silly... but not for the reasons stated in the video!

I remember the individual Celibidache Bruckner sypmhonies were fantastically expensive - more than full price, until suddenly they were available in a single box (which I bought) for the price of one CD.
