- Here I demonstrate inking a panel from Superman Unchained #3 and compress the time down to about 3 minutes. This was inked entirely with a Raphael 8404 for expediency, but would normally switch off between brush and crow quill. Penciled by the great Jim Lee. Thanks to my son Toffer who shot and edited the video.
On average, I spend between 8 and 10 hours of actual work time on a page. I inked the panel in this demo in about 45 minutes of real time.
😱😱😱
Is that the brush pen that you used at the beginning?
... Mr Williams ?
Amazing work!
Wow! Amazing! I know that you inked alot of Jim Lee's artwork. Was X-Men the first comic you inked?
The music scared the crap out of me
ye
lOL IM DIED
Tiffany C lol me too (English for my bad sorry)
lmao i feel you😂
Tiffany C same
*cracks fingers*
Alright looks straight forward enough I can do this.
*spills entire bottle of ink over the paper*
...Fuck.
Dino G Haha. I feel like that would be most of the people here. XD
lucky you , i did spill a whole 500ml of ink on the floor and the ink just bounce to the ceilling ( and it was in a furnished rented apartment, so not only did i mess with my drawing but also my apartment ( never get those plastic ink bottles by the way )
Thrallath I did that today but spilt half a bottle of India black star ink all over my comforter putting the ink away... I need another table...
Thrallath I
Perfect abstract art. I can sense the emotion from here. How does 20 million sound for your masterpiece?
I've been watching so much howtobasic that i thought he was going to splatter the ink over the drawing lol
Lmao
Zedthy my eyes have been blessed with the titties \( •^• )/ praise the titty
Urprofile pic is from hentai?
You need Jesus
You are absolutely correct. Brushes are much more efficient and multipurpose. And a good brush makes the job all the easier and is much more forgiving to learn than a nib.
OHH GOD!!! thx for the little heart attack from the suddenly loud music!
Same!
+stellvia hoenheim "dieded"? Seriously?
VD Studio its a meme on 9gag
Konstantin Lobmayr oh i understand now
Nugroho Pangestu 😂
Amazing work. I wish I could master a brush like that. I jumped on the digital band wagon but I still respect the talent of the brush and crow quill. Keep up the awesome work!
I only plan to use digital to edit drawings. There's a certain satisfaction in drawing traditionally that I want to keep
I was planning on going full digital but after watching this, the old Comic Book Greats videos, and VZA's Jim Lee videos, I think I will go full traditional. Time to get some supplies!
0:38 trying to give me a heart attack...
HAHHAHAHAH SAMEEE IVE ALMOST SHAT MY PANTS
Thank you for putting the time for when it starts lol. I have bad anxiety when loud noises happen, and I started to freak out when I read the comments that something was gonna happen. 😂
Didn't want to miss the video over it. xD
I appreciate the occasional real time moments, showcasing how deliberate and thoughtful each stroke is. I wish people would post the actual length of time a project like this consumes.
I come back to this video every now and then and it always blows my mind!! Amazing work
MrRomes123 Thank you MrRomes, and everyone who's been leaving comments. Very glad people find this video entertaining. I promise to make a new video soon!
Scott Williams Wow, you're very welcome. I look forward to more videos :D
and then NEVER MADE ANOTHER VIDEO,... !!!!!
Its been 8 years
@@scottwilliams2581 9 years now...
I'm surprised he didn't get any smudges. That ink dries quickly.
same
Draugen or he's a god
Hes also not dragging his hand on the paper
I find amsterdam acrylic inks to dry fast without smudges like, jimmy johns level of speed.
Yeah, he starts at the bottom
If that was me, I'd be so nervous I'd drench the page with sweat! So much precision, and you make it look so easy!
lol if it was me, i would've accidentally drop the bottled ink on the page. u gots to be very patient for this
Saladon89 I've been drawing for years, and I still don't have that kind of precision. (or patience). All that just to make something he already drew permanent. o.o
I've used a both brushes and quills for almost 25 years, but started doing a lot more of the brush work starting with Hush. Now I mix it up quite a bit on any given page. This was done with a brush exclusively just so I could speed up the video process.
Brush control, wow. The risk put into making that with a paintbrush was high and you did it with no problem.
RehAdventures I don’t think that a paint brush it’s actually a pen
Blue Exile that's a paint brush NOT a pen.
The look of your dog in the backround was hilarious cx, he's so cute
that intro was a jump scare of the highest caliber
I keep coming back to this vid over the years and it's incredible every single time!
Hey this is really cool, but you didnt have to speed it up so much. I think people would really appreciate watching some of the lines being made in real time speed. It would add to the educational value off the video!
I hear that a lot, and I will try an post a slowed down version soon.
Scott Williams Cool, thats great to hear! Nothing better than being able to watch a master at work!
shawz10 Guess that never happened.
Completely agree.
I agree. I could watch you ink a whole page in real time as long as I remembered to go pee first hahaha...
All those lines and strokes with a brush, that's really amazing!!
Instantly featured.
How I wish we had all this media back in the 90's...
Thank you for decades of inspiration, Mr. Williams!
Thanks for the kind words. Anything I can to inspire makes all the hard work worth while.
Wow, this was incredible to watch!
I enjoy watching these types of videos for inspiration. They never fail me.
man my drawing look like someone wiped their ass with a rag drenched in puke and threw it on a piece of paper.
TootTootMcbumbersnazzle so true lol
Honestly, you're not wrong. That is exactly how modern art is sadly. It's all meaning with no skill ~_~
+TootTootMcbumbersnazzle that joke is too real :(
just print a pic and trace it..
TootTootMcbumbersnazzle I think you'd probably have more luck selling it as modern art if someone legitimately wiped their arse with a rag covered in puke and then threw it on a peice of paper. Modern art seems to have an affinity for the vulgar.
Scott Williams giving us a glimpse into how the magic is made...and with a SICK song! More like this please.
Wow, I have been looking for a Scott Williams video on youtube for a looong time!
Thank you so much, Mr. Williams!
I really hope you do more of these!
God, this is so amazing. Look at those beautiful lines. Wonderful.
This video was not played at a faster speed....
This is pretty much how he works.....
Princess Lucina yup he's a god
Hth
I love this man's work. One of my favorite comic inkers. An artist himself.
I loved the varied hatching combined with the looser sktchy style in the corners. It made the whole thing way more dynamic. Thanks for posting this! :-)
Good lord that was amazing. One of the all-time best inkers in the game right here. I could have watched you ink a whole page in real time. Great video editing as well.. I appreciated the small real time instances. PLEASE POST MORE VIDEOS!
Scott Williams + Jim Lee = PERFECTION.
it's unreal how you made those lines look like you were still using a quill. I had read that you switched from quill to brush during the Batman Hush arc and here you demonstrate it doesn't matter what you use your technique is flawless.
Awesome video! I love how it slows down in certain spots to show actual speed of your strokes then speeds up again. keep posting!
Outstanding work by one of the best inkers in the trade.
Beautiful stuff. Nothing but respect for this disciplined high quality master artform! 😱
Great work,by one of my favorites inkers, one of the top bests!
Wow! THE Scott Williams! Great video, ppl complain because they want a how-to video. I remember when I was a kid I would draw all the little tapers in the lines with technical pens, before I found out they came naturally from a brush. You were, and are an inspiration, Sir.
Watching inside a silent room. Then at 0:39 the music started playing. WAHAHAHA!!!
Thank you for letting us in on the process of making art. WOW!!! You are great Mr Scott Williams.
MASTER. i grew watching your art. is a pleasure to see you here on youtube.
This is beautiful, Scott! A really inspiring video!
This is a great video, loved watching it, thank you for sharing!!
I love the flourish you put on the end of your strokes!
HUSH!!!! Its the supreme inking work!
Just wow. Beautiful. Your control is exquisite.
OMG!! Scott uses a brush!!! A BRUSH!!!Okay so now I need to re-evaluate my inking process . Great work Mr. Williams!!! You are a master of comic book art!
Awesome video! Please make more! Please please.
kind of take for granted how much effort goes into these pages. Good job love the work and keep it up.
I remember seeing some older Lee stuff before he started working with you. A world of difference. You made me understand at a very young age just how important your job is and I consider you two inseparable.
That is crazy good...really beautiful calligraphy with the brush. You know, I kept waiting to see what you were going to do with the ink bottle. Every artist has their own system for the ink bottle, left side, right side, below...but you held onto it the entire time. I don’t know that I’ve ever seen that before.
Scott Williams is my hero. Wow.
Amazing work! I would never have thought such finesse was possible with a brush! I would like to try this style of inking out in the future. Look forward to seeing more of your and Jim's finished pieces :)
Outstandingly spectacular! Please post more of these, and in real time... even if it's raw, with little to no editing, no music, totally silent, or whatever, just watching your brush work is incredible!

To Mr. Scott Williams: I applaud that you are now interacting with your fans! You made me a subscriber of your channel. Thank You!!
Great job, your sensitivity towards every stroke is sublime!
awesome work dear god, those skills with just a brush!
A legend of comics! I'm lucky enough to have a page of Danger Girl art that you inked, and it is simply incredible. Brush work is beautiful.
I just read all the HUSH comic....thanks for your hard work inking that, Mr Williams!
i would never have the patience to draw something like this, but respect to him.
This is something I always wanted to see : a close up view of Mr. Scott Williams at work. Possibly the best inker alongside Terry Austin in the comic book industry.
Brings back memories back in the 1970s I used to love photocopying the black and white Marvel reprints sold in the UK and re-ink them myself. I had some of my original stuff exhibited by my college. Then I gave it all up to go and be a supermarket manager 😱. I am such an arse. Love this work.
Lmfao I got so excited once the music started. Great technique and vid.
like... if you got scared when the music started.... XD
Alejandra Cortez yep lol
Scott Williams the GOD of inking . I never knew who you was but watched you many times from this video . Ricardo Mackey Creator of Phantom Raven and the Superior Strangers
I am swooning over this. You're brush control is amazing. Whenever I try to ink with brushes it never wants to behave.
My art is always in need of a great inker. I will never say my work is mine because the inker brings out the shine in my art. Great job!
Aint going to lie, i bet thats so relaxing and therapeutic.
Amazing video!!!, very inspiring to all aspiring Inkers. Thumbs up for you Scott. Looking forward for the next one :)
Great clip Scott. You and Jim are a great team.
(mouth agape) I've never seen anyone ink a comic using just a brush... o_o It's amazing! Nice job!
***** Well, yeah, I know, I'm just saying this is the first time I see someone doing it, not just observing the finished drawing =^-^=
I can't believe it took so long for me to find this. I absolutely love Jim Lee, but nobody can ink like Scott Williams. JL stuff looks so flat when someone else inks. Thanks so much for this, Scott.
I just wish the camera would spin and shift and zoom less, it makes me dizzy plus its difficult to see properly whats going on... shame
Rhys Pollock well all he did was time lapse. He didn't focus on the actually camera angles. He recorded himself doing it but I'm sure if it was regular speed it wouldn't be as bad and jerky on the eyes.
late comment but for anyone who’s wondering the same, it’s not the camera moving it’s the paper! He’s prob doing it to 1. Avoiding smugding, and 2. lines are easier and convenient to draw with an inward stroke with dip pens
the internet should have more videos of Scott Williams inking
Lovely stuff! Great amount of character in the strokes. And yeah, I'd love to see a little more of this in real time.
Your work is always inspiring
Phenomenal. Proof these guys would be nothing without you!
There was an Uncanny(273? 4?) That was pencilled by Jim Lee, Whilce, larry Stroman, terry Shoemaker, John Byrne, etc., and inked by... Uh... YOU! Tour de force!
SICK! You make it look so easy man. Brushes terrify me...
I can't imagine how many hundreds and thousands of hours it takes to get this good. So fascinating to watch.
Wow..whole new respect for inkers..wow..I especially n surprisingly like the subtle "accidental addition or changes in original drawing when inking. It also bears a certain artistic license along with responsibility while inking without harming drawing but rather enhancing it. OR..WOW..great great work.
Huge fan here, sir. Will definitely share this.
Way to jumpscare me with the music.
I am impressed with patience and precision!
Good God, simply phenomenal
the best in the game! Such a master inker!
scott williams, klaus jansen & todd mcfarlane= best inkers ever
Big fan of you.thank you so much.
Scott williams and jim lee.
The golden team.
And has been for more than 25 years.
I think I already commented on this but just in case I didn't.......FREAKIN AWESOME!!!!! Nuff said. :)
Hey Robert! I have been subscribed to your page for about a year. Just wanted to say hello and laugh at the coincidence of us randomly seeing the same vid only 3 hours apart.
Must be a challenge inking Jim Lee's stuff.
you got to respect the level of patience that goes into this
Love your work, and would love to see more videos. Thanks!!!.
Thank you for posting this vid Mr. Williams.
I think the the most underappreciated part of this video is how long it must have taken and all this inking just for one panel. One freaking panel. And as many have said before, without smudging or splattering any of the ink either. All in one sitting. What in the world?
thought he was gonna use a dip pen. but a paintbrush worked awesome
I've tried inking with a brush and it's so hard to get the fine lines you need. The control required to ink like this is tremendous, it must take a lifetime of practice!
felicisfox I've never tried it. I use g pen. what do you use?
I use multiliners! I find them much easier to control the line width. The only time I'll use a bottle of ink right now is if I'm drawing something looser/less graphical.
felicisfox nice. I use those too. only time I use those is when I'm filling in a space that I erased with whiteout or something.
felicisfox also for drawing panel lines
Absolutely awesome :D
I cannot wait to see more of your inking videos sir!!
I like how when he made the mistake of inking over the pencil line he didn't panic or erase it but just decided to add new details of his own to cover up. Now that is a good artist!
amazing. masterful work
This is amazing.. Beautiful inking technique.. :D I ink with pen only and whenever I see such a mastery of a brush I marvel at it.. :) And you sir are the master..
I love this kinds of style of drawing and awesome inking by the way
