Great analogy! I actually feel it's more than that, I think that's exactly what Page is going for, the highlighting of the impression of those blues/rock/country/folk sounds. Too much precision and you'd spoil the effect. Sound impressionism.

jimmy wasn’t as wasted from 69-73 ish and even live he would go off on his solos and always come back and i always seem to enjoy them it’s like listening to a new version of the song

I got to see Led Zeppelin in the early 70s, when they played four hour shows. He never missed the note and was very precise with all his guitar leads. Years later, I saw him play with the Firm and he had a young hot shot guitar player playing all the leads to all of the songs. He could barely stand in his dragon embroidered pants, and I felt so sorry for him. That must've been the height of his drug use and it did put a tear in my eyes. 🏴☠

Thanks for your wonderful commentary as well as sharing your list! :) So many naysayers seem to totally fail to understand what Page is about... his brilliance and creativity are unparalleled. After all, he once described Zeppelin's style as 'Tight but loose'! Until he got too heavily into drugs in the later 70s, his live improvisation was also unbelievably inspired, in my opinion. And, for my part, if it wasn't for Jimmy Page I would never have picked up a guitar. For that I will be forever grateful.

Greatest player ever! Jimmy live between 69-73 can’t be touched. His live playing during those years was off the charts. No one could touch him live.
Also, Fool In the Rain has one of those incredible Jimmy solos. It’s like it’s own song within the song. Jimmy was famous for that….it’s like his solos picked you up and told you a little story and then placed you back down. Just so many great solos to choose from!

Great "play by play" - always enjoy your perspective. I blurted out "loose not sloppy" before you got there - sloppy implies that Jimmy couldn't play better whereas loose implies a style that he was purposely targeting, as you correctly point out. I was also holding my breath until the end fearing that you had forgotten about the "Since I've Been Loving You" solos. So glad that you put them at #1 as the song has always been one of my favourite.
All of Jimmy Page's Solos are Jimmy Page's best solos. You play that beautifully !🤘🤘
I promised myself that I was gonna listen to the introduction and the 10th song, now I am on the 6th one, I usually get bored during these but your knowledge and presence while talking to camera makes one want to watch it till the end.

Love your defense of the brilliant Jimmy Page man! One important thing though - Jimmy Page often played sensationally live if you listen to bootlegs from 1969-1973. There are spectacular moments, and the guy played rhythm and lead and improvised his ass off 3 hours a night and it was mostly kickass!! I think the hard stuff caught up to him in 1975, but before then he really kicked ass. Listen to even some of the playing on The Song Remains the Same. No Quarter for example. And his rhythm playing was always world class. Joe Satriani recently said he’s been listening to those Zep bootlegs and Page blew him away. I think you should listen and amend some of those statements about Page live in his prime. But love ya man! BTW, my personal favorite is Osaka 9/29/71. The guy was on fire. The dude was a genius, is all I can say.
I completely agree, shredding solos often lack a lot of feel and mind blowing elements. They sometimes become too predictable.
What an incredible and entertaining video Mr. Allen. I think you just encapsulated all of the desires and longings of my entire teenage years in just under thirty minutes. Your playing is phenomenal and certainly evoked a few memories from my (very) misspent youth.
When I was in 5th grade (1972) we still had Show-n-tell. Classmate brought in a record, put it on the record player and out the single speaker the class (and teacher) heard “Hey hey momma said the way you move, gonna make you groove…”. The teacher immediately yelled “TAKE THAT OFF”…been a Zep fan ever since.
How, but how on earth do you manage to replicate so precisely Jimmy's sl... looseness? I'm glad I'm not the only one praising your commentary skills, I think it's one of the corner stones of your channel. Thanks!
Thanks Pedro, appreciate the kind words. I have to say, that few things annoy me more than comments complaining about my talking too much. It's what I do. It's a big part of what my channel is all about. I've even been putting little disclaimers at the beginning of my videos now, TELLING people that I'm going to talk and that if you want to skip ahead, please do. They still complain, haha. I like that my channel is kind a mix of playing and almost podcast-like rock and roll history lessons.
Achilles Last Stand could use a bit more commentary about the cerebrally-executed sense of phrasing, spacing and pauses. Combined, these elements lend no less than an other-worldly drama that is Greek mythology.
What a brilliant guitar solo! You could justify this solo at 1, 2 or 3 and convince many people either way.

I like every one of the songs off of "The Song Remains The Same" better on the studio tracks, However, "Since I've Been Loving You" sounds so much better to on that album. The solo's are altered from the studio version but man does he sound awesome on that tune live. If it's been awhile since you've given that version a listen I highly recommend it. Great choices on this video. Very cool watching those solo's being played up close and personal.
I know this video is over a year old but I really enjoyed this one. Jimmy has been my favorite guitar player since I was a little kid. Next to Jimmy has always been Gilmour for the melodic solo's. I'd love to see you do another top 10. Maybe cover Eddie Van Halen's top 10. Not Van Hagar. haha Peace Joe

Great job on the first ‘since I’ve been loving you’ solo there. 24:51. You really captured the dynamics and expression in that one, and it’s a true pleasure to listen to your rendition. Incidentally to my knowledge (and ears) Jimmy perhaps played a strat on that one.
These days of course, some guitarists, the majority in fact, all get caught up In brute-force and speed as more important than dynamics or expression. often seemingly deliberately drowning-out or hiding any expression in the music.
It’s special moments like that solo of Jimmy’s , that should remind us of the true purpose of playing any instrument.

Led Zeppelin were known as Tight But Loose.I ignore the naysayers , Jimmy is now 78 .Well done on a wonderful video.

And back in the day he was ridiculously fast for that time in music...
He played on the edge and put on a guitar show. He paved the way for hard rockers and blueprint for heavy metal as well as some great acoustic. Even Eddie Van Halen credits Page in the song Heartbreaker for introducing him to hammer ons and pull offs...

Great list and great playing. I really liked your phrasing on Good Times Bad Times, in particular the licks before the ascending pentatonics. Song Remains the Same has some of my favorite Jimmy Page solos; I never get tired of listening to them.

Remember everyone. Page came from that period of time where there wasn't any signal processors or modified amplifiers that can help your playing and cover up mistakes....They relied on the best sound they could get from those amps and the their personal techniques. Big Jimmy Page fan

Stairway to heaven is as well a great solo, really MAGIC / and all the rest make Jimmy one of the most charismatic rock guitarists of all times / I had the luck to see them live in Zurich, June 29th, 1980, just a few months before John Bonham's death... Came across your Reddit post on r/OldSchoolCool and man I got to say, your videos are amazing. I recently got a Kramer Baretta and learning to shred on it, stuff like George Lynch and Warren Demartini haha.
Let’s face it , if Mr Page didn’t want the solo(s) on Heartbreaker to sound exactly like they are on the record - he could have just recorded it again and again until it was ‘perfect’ His genius is that his lead is not predictable , it’s always raw , imperfect and a bit challenging . It boils down to the sounds on the Zep albums are exactly what that band wanted them to be. Respect.
Very accurate and great sound
If he'd been sloppy he wouldn't have made it as a session musician. Heartbreaker is like a car chase where our hero is always on the edge of disaster -very exciting, visceral. You mentioned drugs and alcohol when playing live, and I'd add that like the car chase example, he was often improvising, really hanging it out there, taking risks which payed off some times better than others. From In Through the Out Door I would include the solo on 'In The Evening' . My favourite ever JP solo (and one of my favourite ever solos) is his solo on the live version of 'No Quarter' from 'The Song Remains the Same'. So many great Page solos in his rich catalogue !
Plus Jimmy didn’t just stand there live like another fav of mine David Gilmour. Jimmy danced and pranced and shook the roof off. Not note for note but heartbeat by heartbeat

Your Rover solo has this cool moment at at around 10:50 where it almost sounds like you're playing octaves? Am I wrong? Is that an effect you've added to the solo? It sounds fantastic.

I agree completely, although not on being regularly wasted. He entered in problems with heroin in '76, also with booze sometimes, so his damned American tour after Presence album you can hear in first half of tour that he is in very bad shape. But what was with Page, he was a player who played every time new solo, never repeating same from album, and his best solos were on stage, what you can hear on their numerous bootlegs which are very bad in quality, but extremely informative about him and about whole band, who on stage always created music from beginning, not like others, today much more appreciated musicians who always played same tones in same manner.

Page live was a man taking chances in the moment on the go. Courageous if you ask me. Nothing worse than seeing someone play exactly what you hear on the recording. Sterile and boring. Jimmy flew by the seat of his pants and when it wobbled or failed it was somewhat of a mess, but when it worked it was pure bliss. Genius and breathtaking like the wheels could come off any minute. What a ride. Give me man playing in the moment over anyone you can name.

Whole Lotta Love is really one of the worst guitars solos I know... it sounds like a beginner who's just learned the Emin pentatonic and tries to play it fast
Can you PLEASE PLEASE tell me how you get that tone for the second since I’ve been loving you solo, just recently getting into pages playing for real, and that tone has me ina chokehold

If you listen to Jimmy Page when he play with the Neil Christian & The Crusaders, you will hear him play guitar leads that he later used on the first and second album in totally different Led Zeppelin songs. 🏴☠🏴☠

@@KellyDeanAllenGuitar Sounds great. I've got matching MIK Fender Tele and Strat from 2006 (both in natural ash) with SD pickups fitted as issued.
I haven't played them for years because they both need some serious setting up and I've got six other Teles and four other Strats to meet my needs but will get to them soon. I bought a hipshot G/B bender to go on the Tele but it was that long ago i can't even remember where I' put it!

Good video, I pretty much agree but you really need a top 100 for Zep. The greatest band ever, period. The only way to measure any instrumentalist is their music, people don’t give a shit about technical skill unless it sounds good otherwise Vai (terrible music) and the surfing with an alien dude would be the greatest and their not even in the top 100 IMHO. Glen Campbell was better then both of them combined. Anyway, loved the video, the energy and the playing...

Because a big part of this video is a discussion about Jimmy Page. I stated that at the very beginning. I was even kind enough to tell people to skip ahead if you don't want to listen.
This term "sloppy" was applied to Pagey by the egocentric guitarmachine Eddie van Halen.
People call Jimmy Page sloppy because they are just not acquainted with the concept of "interpretation" anymore. I doubt there is someone who is into classical music who would say sloppy after listening to his playing. Sloppy and interpretation may seem very alike for musical ears who are not trainned for recognizing the difference, but it's whopping for trained ears. The fact is that when a musician has the ability to interpret when playing, doubting about his mastering of the instrument basics makes no sense at all, because interpreting on a musical instrument is a whole other level than just playing the correct tempo. Obviously Jimmy Page could play the basic tempo, any student with the least experience on the instrument can do that.
Also people who believe this about Page don't realize that John Bonham did the same thing, but obviously with lesser intensity as long as the drums lead the base tempo. The point is that Led Zeppelin's music asks for that kind of swing, and it's one of the most charming thing their music has to offer. That's what so magic about Page's playing.
The thing about the concerts is that Page clearly didn’t took the live playing as work. He drunk until he could barely stand and got on the stage to have fun by playing his music. If you see the recordings of their live performances when they were not famous yet, you'll see it's a whole other story.
“He drank till he could barely stand up” What are you talking about? Jimmy was on fire live between 69-73. He was focused and his playing was slick during those years. Go listen to any bootleg and you’ll see. He was unfocused in later years but his playing was still great just not near as tight.
