  • Is the Mitsubishi Eclipse reliable? The DSM platform has a reputation for being unreliable. I go over my experience with my opinion on the EagleTalon and Mitsubishi Eclipse.

They are reliable, but not cheap anymore, my advice: (1) save up, a good running one won't be cheap (2) look around for a long time for the right one (3) don't be afraid to buy in another state (4) look for low owner count, older owners are better (5) look for low miles (6) look for low mod count (7) look for auto trans, can always be manual swapped (8) make sure it has a carfax and receipts for maintinence (9) inspect for rust (10) inspect for leaks and test drive it. 😚👍

Honestly I feel like a lot of these 90’s tuner cars like Eclipse’s, Integra’s, Civic’s, Prelude’s, CRX’s, S-Chassis’s, and Miata’s are hard to find in good condition for a reasonable price nowadays just because so many of them were modified, stolen, crashed, raced, or passed around by different owners it sucks to see this happen especially with the second gen eclipse because this has always been my dream tuner car

Sooo many kids got them as their first or second car & by the looks alone and think they have a race car & they just beat the crap out of them, and that's a good sized amount of them running around for sale once they put over 1k or 2k into them then they sell it right away because they know it's only a matter of time before it's completely broken down... Litterally any cool or beautiful looking car kids think are race cars and within just 10kmiles they can break everything in it until it's either scrap or a big project to make it able to function like it should or at least drivable, it's sad how many are gone or trashed because of first time drivers alone, their brains function like ooo I saw this on a F&F movie so it's a race car and I'm gonna first rice it out, clap it out, and go "drifting" & "their version of racing"
& shortly after you have 2-3 hundred bucks worth of scrap, or try to sell it out piece by piece, but of course they will always say all parts are in the best conditions as possible & then you have tons of cars with absolute trash inside your car, it's like a "Metal Infection", 1 car sold piece by piece, can easily ruin &/or infect 15-20 other car's piece by piece, and sometimes it doesn't matter the age, there's tons of Crack head's with stolen cars in their 50's who just need money so they will get tweaked out and spend a night looking up info on the car & it's parts & tell you exactly what you want to hear & with the new fresh info in their brains they can even seem like they know what they are talking about & know what to say & what not to say, & between those 2 types of people alone that must be at least 33% of the Eclipses out their, so the best way to get the best quality cars & parts is to do as much information as you can before you get something that looks cool or sounds like a good deal & a legit car, but make sure you get as much info as possible & test out everything you can before buying anything!!

Its true. Very true with the Eclipse that I got, the previous owners didn't take very good care of it so all of the work I have to do is mainly just restoration. I was 16 when I got my first DSM granted I grew up around dirt track so that definitely gave me a little head start. My first one was a silver 95 gst that from what I gathered form the previous owner was slapped together from two other eclipse. This was back in 2011 so I only paid 2k for it and I loved it but I started to find a lot of issues with it like never ending electrical problems to the car not being stright in the front. I was always chasing wiring problems and I Eventually. parked it do to which which I still kick myself for till this day. Since then iv been very active with everything Mitsubishi just haven't got around to getting another 2g but I will cuz it is my all time favorite car! Moral of the story don't buy something that's already been past around and teated poorly do your research and be picky don't settle for the first one you see and remember it's not the cars fault they're old 😂 and probably been very absorbed

I got a 99GS-T from the original owner that he forgot in his barn for years, and I drove it home that day. It ran for over a year, and i had little problem with it, until the inside of the water pump chipped and my engine was toast. that was 2021. Now in 2023, i got a good deal on a rolled Eagle Talon TSI, drive trains fine, but the cabin is destroyed. During this very slow build, getting different things i needed while talking with people in the community, who have drag racing builds or stock builds, a big thing with these cars is not doing regular maintenance. Like you said, these cars are old, and they dont work the same. We're fighting to work with 20 year old parts and tech. A lot of stuff needs to be outright replaced, or redone. The cars rep is tied to whose willing to put in the time (and money) to do things properly. This is a car you cant cut corners with the work you put in.

I put a lot of money to rebuild it after my dad left it in the garage for 7+ years. It has a bit of problems here & there but some what easy for me to figure out & replace stuff. I’m glad I convince my dad to let me have it since he was planning to just give it away, now I enjoy it soo much. Been driving DSM since 2003, I've literally owned about 15-20 DSM cars since then and most my buddies had them too. They are only as reliable as the owner. I had a 1G GST back in 2003 bone stock with over 350k miles on it that ran great but I've also had a 2G develop crank walk first 30k miles. They are old cars so yes parts wear out, ppl rag on them, rig them, hack them up and that tends to mess them up. Lack of maintenance, lack of money but Crystler as well had it's flaws on this platform. Even the 420A was notorious for head gasket issues because Crystler didn't bore out the back head stud on cyl 4 which bottomed out the stud causing failing head gasket issues. The 4G63 has a strong motor but a weak problematic transmission, I've literally gone through a transmission more than once on most DSMs I've owned "they are junk" drive em right, keep up with maintenance, know what you're doing when working on them, prepare to spent money. They aren't for everyone, fun when running right tho.. I call DSM "don't start motors" for a reason lol

i had 2 engine blocks where the bolt housing cracked leaving just 3 bolts to mount the bell housing to the block. i even tried welding it but cast iron to aluminum was beyond my skill level. i knew a dude that used a pair of vice grips lmao
such a shame because other than that, the 4g63 is an insanely good engine. i slapped a t3t4 on stock compression with zero issues. i haven't seen any other engine able to handle that without changing rings.

31+ years on a Talon TSi AWD manual and the only major issues since the dealer replaced the trans nearly 30 years ago have been a bad ECU, harmonic balancer that came apart, and the trans popping out of 1st gear, all fixed and no issues since. Otherwise it's been standard maintenance issues like rust, worn bushings and BJs, worn brake pads and clutch discs, tire replacement, the sort of thing that every car has if you own and drive it long enough. Of course I've never raced or modded it or done anything too crazy with it, so I'm not a typical DSM owner. Like any well-built car if you treat it right then it'll treat you right back.

I know I’m late but I found a old gs that hasn’t been cared for too well so I want to take it off his hands, it has minimal rust, problems with the breaks, it’s a stock manual and the windows have cracks from rocks and such he wants 2900$ for it, do you guys think it’s a good choice😅

Any dsm can be reliable if you use quality parts. Stay away from eBay at all cost(learned this the hard way). Nowadays they’re not cheap and are very hard to find. I loved mine and used to daily it for a year and it was definitely hell but was a very fun experience. Kept it for 6 years and it went from an eBay special to an 1100hp self build street car

I’ve had a 1g 1990 panda 450hp, 2g 98 GST stock, 98 GSX currently 600hp 6262. The best advice is to go and check the cars out if it has rust walk away. If the owner says the following, WALK AWAY:
    car has been sitting
    it needs to be “tuned”
Rust in strut towers but runs good
The paint is mitchmatched and not all the same.
Now if you have money to blow buy the car and send it to rob fig in PA. He’s the absolute best at rebuilding these back into beauty’s.

I know the 4G63t is more unreliable compared to the 420a , But the 4g63 is a stronger engine and at Low hp so is the transmission . The 4g63 can be more reliable But like you say most of them are abused and mistreated . My advice is if you do get a gst gsx , make sure you spend that money on maintenance first before you start slapping performance parts on . I know by experience and not taking the proper routes to having a fun reliable car
Another down fall of the 4G63 is that it was a Japanese platform Built in The USA . Need I say more lol

Now you gotta build a mirage you’ll have the full line up and you can turn it into a evo 2 door đŸ€€. Boom easily 100k more views. But honestly bro where do you keep finding all these clean 2gs đŸ€€ every single one I find either needs a whole new engine and rust maintenance on every fender or it’s a 95 model with low miles for 17-25k Idk why but it’s always a 95 model for crazy money 😂.

& shortly after you have 2-3 hundred bucks worth of scrap, or try to sell it out piece by piece, but of course they will always say all parts are in the best conditions as possible & then you have tons of cars with absolute trash inside your car, it's like a "Metal Infection", 1 car sold piece by piece, can easily ruin &/or infect 15-20 other car's piece by piece, and sometimes it doesn't matter the age, there's tons of Crack head's with stolen cars in their 50's who just need money so they will get tweaked out and spend a night looking up info on the car & it's parts & tell you exactly what you want to hear & with the new fresh info in their brains they can even seem like they know what they are talking about & know what to say & what not to say, & between those 2 types of people alone that must be at least 33% of the Eclipses out their, so the best way to get the best quality cars & parts is to do as much information as you can before you get something that looks cool or sounds like a good deal &/or a legit car, but make sure you get as much info as possible & test out everything you can before buying anything!!!

    1) Almost all of them have been beated on, blown up, wrecked, built poorly and just in general clapped, 2) these cars are old... and Mitsubishi as far as automobiles is barely holding on to the North American market and has discontinued most of the parts for them so it can be difficult. 3) They (if built properly) can be relatively reliable but once you start going too far above 400-450whp the reliability drops off pretty quickly. I've owned a few GSX's at various different power levels. I love them but I wouldn't recommend them as a only car. They are great 2nd vehicles.
