Step 1 👉 If you draw something on a rounded surface, it curves along with the object. Straight lines make it look flat and 2 dimensional
Step 2 👉 When shading an object that isn't flat, dont shade using straight lines. Follow the curve of the object with your cross hatch lines
Step 3 👉 when cross hatching, your lines should be more spread apart the closer it gets to the light source

this video taught me how to shadow thanks very much :D
awesome
Please do more on cross hatching. I usually blend with a blending stump but it looks weird. I have not mastered shading yet but I will. Your skills are awesome.
got it!
I have shared and told a lot of friends to watch your videos. You are amazing in your craft my friend!
I love the Old zach... where he just sketch and do tutorials.

Is it a pencil
What tool did he use for don't and do

Uh huh, I think the subs got to his head🤯
He gives away apple products now lol
I prefer cross-hatching as well when I draw comic art. I think it looks better. But when I do realistic portraits, I prefer smudging to get the proper tones. Different kinds of art require different techniques.
true! Cross hatching is fun :))
Yeah "smudging" or blending is good for getting a good realism going on a piece. But if not done correctly, you'd just get a muddy mess but for that awesome comic feel cross hatching is the way to go
The way you speak af if your drinking tea
my art teacher says "we don't do smudging" so I had to stop.
@@lancelottyrell9491 I'd say practice it every once in a while. Just because it's not part of curriculum doesn't mean it cant help on certain styles/projects
I'm no pro, but that "Don't" at 0:44 was painful to watch.

Thank you for your clear and functional tutorials. I'm a traditional graphite artist and shade primarily edge to value, blending, gardations of value, etc. Your tutorials on line weight and alternative shading is helping tremendously in my more imaginative drawings. Thank you so much for your time to do these. Your art is amazing btw!!!
I’ve always been a smudger. Haven’t really experimented with crosshatching before yesterday. I decided to do the Inktober challenge with no real inking experience. I watched this with the hope of learning a little about crosshatching. I was not disappointed. Much of it is common sense, but was great to watch it in practice and listen to your common sense tips. Thanks!
Is that a dead body in the bed? 😀
loool naw my roommate
Why u smiling
Looks more like his roommate with a HUGE BONER 😂
That's zach's roommate that never talks
yes because corpses move
If you want realism, smudging is better. If that's not vital, both represent form and lighting perfectly well, and each achieves a different aesthetic result.
seigeengine I agree.
Me too a portrait with cross hatching looks less realistic than one with smudged shading.
Smudging would result in an uneven distribution of shade. Artists such as Andrew Loomis handle cross hatching really well in their realistic works. It has more to do with the artist's level of technique than with the technique itself.

Oh my God I totally did that to, lmao. We're all a bunch of weirdos!!

Never learned to smudge. Always turned out looking dirty instead of being a shadow.
I loved the old Zach,,
Now he keeps customising
Over and over again!
Yeah i know! In the old times he did quality content know hes just doing it for the clicks...
Maybe he likes teamwork, because mostly they are making with group of people. Lmao 🤣

I have never heard of cross hatching. This is fantastic! I was an art major 20 years ago and started drawing again but damn I feel like a novice now that I have seen your pictures! Please make some videos on how you draw for the novice watchers such as myself. Your basic techniques and the way you see the object you are putting on paper. I see them in shapes as I draw them before I put it down on paper.
"im gonna use this drowing of Venom that I don't like very much"........really?!!!
I mean imagine rubbing out a drawing that he likes a lot trying to show how he did the technique and accidentally messing up , makes more sense now doesn’t it
I used to follow this tutorial back when this was uploaded but cant understand it. Good thing David finch became a consistent youtube and taught me how to actually do it
My biggest issue with art is patience. I wanna do it quick, and I speed over parts I find boring, esp. shading large areas, leaving hatching that doesn’t match the curve of a material and is completely out of place with the more interesting parts of the drawing. Hope this helps somebody realize they have a similar problem
At 1:46 it sounds exactly like when you get hit in Minecraft lmao
Lmao yeah it does 🤣
LoL who’s that in the background xD
hahah random people in the dorms
its a bit annoying cuz its loud but i will get my own apartment soon!!!

Bro what do you mean that you did not like that venom....THAT WAS SUCH AN AMAZING DRAWING...I would buy that🤯...you are my favorite artist 😁👍
Hi ZHC you are my fav ytber but maybe can u do more tutorials plz?? Because then u could share ur skills with us and be insane at art like u XD
For the end of your vid, the shading technique is solely a matter of the effect you want and continuity of the piece. If the whole drawing is blended and you decide to crosshatch a spot or two, it may look out of place (and vice versa). I do think they can be used together in a single piece if 1) it compliments the piece and 2) it is distributed evenly enough that both techniques compliment each other
yeahh
Your pencils are like David Finch
Your inking is like David Finch
Your shading is like David Finch
He is David Finch dum dum dummmm
im a 31 year old who wants to do something with his art,not ashamed to admit that alot of depth is missing in my work,i feel like you are helping me on my journey, thank you friend
Love love LOVE cross hatching!!! Adds so much to the drawing. When your trying to draw something exciting with action there's no better way 😀 love that venom drawing btw!
I was drawing modok..after watching this vid I improved my lines. Thanks Zach
Finally... The thing which I needed the most
awesomeeee
When you talk about crosshatching verses smudging or side pencil shading it is just a matter of medium. With pen you crosshatch, with pencil you can shade with one stroke instead of 10,000 lines. They both are great. The discovery is what's beautiful. You did a beautiful video because we already had a full picture of the desired effect. Very Nice!
Thank u.....finally....thank u... thanks a lot

MY ART TEACHER TOLD ME ''SMUDGING'' WAS ''CHEATING''
yeah same hahaha
Why?
That's the worst tip ever
how tf do u even cheat in art lmao😂
H_L3M4 because you dont learn tonal values and transitions so good. With cross hatching you have to develop tones and their transitions by placing specific hatches. Smudging does that for you, its not cheating generally, but it is sort of cheating if you are trying to learn the exact way to do tonal transitions manually, which feeds into your general understanding. Its better for learning, personally i prefer smudge because i dont have the patience for cross hatching. But i do know how to do it :)
man,i have confess something. when i watch your videos,at same i like them and i am thankful
but,i feel so bad, it isn't your fault. but your drawings are so amazing that when i look at my ''''''arts'''''' and i see the difference. it is taking my will to draw away. again,it isnt your fault.
You would not believe how much I miss the old Zach
I always used to smudge because i wanted to draw realistic but i think im gonna go for kind of a more comicbookstyle thank u very much
Love the technique for comic art! Will definitely start using this now that I’ve got back into drawing and was struggling with my shading.
year 2020 here and I miss these types of videos
I'm really excited to see every video you come out with and this one specifically has been super helpful. ^v^ I'm rooting for you dude!
Cross hatching looks dope
I'm looking forward for more useful tips. I liked and subscribed and even join your notification squad too. btw, the person on the bed is intriguing me
Crazy only 2 years ago you were getting close to 20k. But making super helpful videos to promote art and maybe even inspire a few people to give it a try. Now you have 14 million subs but it’s not the same channel. Half the time they just feel like ads for apple and other high end products. More power to you though I don’t blame you one bit, money is king end of the day.
I prefer cross hatching it looks more cartoony. I enjoyed this tutorial and I see that you follow the same rules for cross hatching that David Finch. What's your opinion about more like Olivier Coipel's rendering style ? It have some similarities here and there but it looks completely different. I'm interested in your opinion on it ;)
ahhh i see
He's very good, but VERY different.

Wait, not pretending to be the authority here but like with a G pen? Different mm points?
A brush or brush pen. The Pentel Pocket Pen is widely used.
Frankus Corrales dip pens, brushes, brushh pens, even ballpoints should work
I like how your art style looks like (David finch)s but in the same time looks different I don't know how you do it.
great work.
Man what happened to this guy 😞
for real
You can make a better Venom than anyone I know, it just impresses me being the way he should be in the first place, tall heavy , lean muscle while very defined and perfectly cross hatched. I am still subbriffied and will stay that way ZHC. Thank you for your guides too, they are great to follow along with as I must practise these things, like hatch/crosshatch and doublecrosshatching. You shred ZHC!~ keep shredding please.
This is a great channel! Anyone who likes David Finch so much must be doing something right! I liked and sub'd. If I had any money, I'd contribute to your Patreon! (What?! No Patreon? Well, get with it and start begging!) ;) Since you seem to be talking comics, I don't know how you would "smudge"--?
thanks ahah I give you guys all this for free!
Remember when he used to draw creative stuuf Instead of drawing generic drawings on expensive stuff ? This is the last thing you want your fav art youtuber to get converted to
Yeah... I want mire tutorials
thanks dude :D
np!!
bruh i wish i found this video sooner, currently working on a Webtoon and this helped a lot. so big brain
Smudging looks dirty and unprofessional, whereas cross hatching looks clean, u can get a better sense of form, and it just looks more professional. I stopped smudging when I was like 12 because I realized it looks like shit
Samee
Go look up some chacoarl paintings ,and tell me more how it looks unprofessional
Santino Grillo were not talking about a chacoarl medium
Garrett Grima yesterday you were 12
asian girls from 88rising music videos good one
I also tried this technique and it works perfect thank you for this !!!!!
I like cross-hatching it looks cleaner and if you smudge with your finger, the oils will turn the grey graphite into a brownish in due time
I watch you before 500K...nostalgic
Crosshatching looks way more appealing. Looking up close at a drawing, and seeing all the intricately placed lines and pencil strokes, can stare at a drawing for a long time taking it in.
On the other hand, smudging doesn't really look like a "drawing". Sure you can get some up-close photorealism, but it doesn't look like traditional art.
I'm a first year Architecture student and we have an activity which is cross hatching but our prof won't allow curves and shaded shadow, only pure cross hatching of straight lines
Both are good. I like smudging to get softer mid tones and smoother transitions. Cross hatching shows diligence and the will to make more strokes.
Man the content of this ZHC and the quality of the current ZHC would be perfect
If anyone is wondering from where the beats in the background are, they're from Lil Yatchy's - One night.
You had me at “ooops... shoot.” I subscribed this video is so helpful!
Man your content has changed so much. I remember this being the first video of you that I watched. Congrats on the success.
I expected this dude to have like 800 subs then I look and it says 23.6 million, good job man.
currently im using a different account but my name is Chris and i have taken a huge interest in your art style, i have only been learning manga and anime style of drawing and im still no were near good but i can tell ive improved, your comic style is a comic i don't see often and i believe it to be a ,excuse my french, bad ass style. I enjoy watching and learning your tips and tricks and i hope to one day improve as fast not just any improvement to learning a new style in general. i know ive rambled on probably miss spelled multiple things while starring at my keyboard but my point is i love your style and i hope others can agree with me when i say your art and skills are bad ass, again excuse my french.
this is actually a good demonstration...
I totally tried to blow out the excess of the eraser on the paper at the 2:20( I thought it was on my smartphone 😂) and I cried from laughter when I noticed what I tried to do😂😂😂
"Hey from two years ago comment" same! 🤣
Congrats on 20 million! Subscribers
cross hatching over smudging. its a matter of style I suppose. Love your videos just started watching. thank you so much for what you do.
I tend to smudge just because I tend to do more realism then comic stuff, but I need to seriously study hatching eventually , I like the look it gives
I am currently studying a drawing course and I just couldn't get cross hatching right. This has helped so much, thank you!
I miss these types of videos
I enjoy old fantasy comics , so i like the hatching . its a fun technique to practice
Thank you so much now I know how to cross hatch
Wow it's amazing, I was thinking what's your trick of shading , thankyou for this video.
Omg ZHC has changed so much in a year.
Yo I know I'm no one special but i would really like it if u could make a more detailed video about cross hatching
You weren’t kidding about this bein a great tutorial
I am watching this in 2020 and his channel is close to 15M subs!
Thank you so much...I guess this is the first video that have in title Instantly that actually works Instantly...This tech is ridiculous haha
ZHC humble beginnings. You really deserve what you have and where you at right now ☺
Cross Hatching for comics, but Smudging with a blending stump for realistic.... Cool videos....
ty!
I use smudging and cross hatching because I like them both
bro, you crashed it...I learned so much from you. Thanks, Zach
I shared this video to all my art friends in school.
im not great at cross hatching this video was helpful. thanx. also i dont typically smudge or cross hatch when using pencil i use a series of small circles with different pressure i guess? but like your cross hatching as the shading gets lighter or further from the shadow dark point i use bigger circles with lighter and lighter pressure... if that makes sense so this video helped me kind of relate the way i shade already to the cross hatching thing so again thanks! :)
When I first watched this vid I really didn’t get what you were doing but by the end i was truly amazed and have a new found respect for crosshatching
Wait it's zhc, it took me so long to realize that
3:30 "talk to the shoulder" 😂
Well soft shading is the be all end all in my opinion; if you have the time and control, the mix of very tight crosshatching and side-pencil shading can be downright realistic; I never smudge, it just messes up the paper's reception to any future strokes.
The quite yelling intro kills me🤣
