What is the BEST HOME WIND TURBINE for a House in the UK

  • I researched the best home wind turbine for use on a house in the UK. There are several things to consider, from turbulence, vibration, structural concerns and aesthetics. Most micro wind turbine systems fall foul of these but I did find an intriguing system from Canada, the Ridgeblde by The Power Collective. I couldn't find a UK installer but I think you will agree the Ridgeblade might address many of the concerns we have with wind turbines for use on a house in the UK.

    Thank you so much for an excellent, well-described video. I have just installed 14 Solar Panels with 2 Batteries using Sunsynk. I was looking for a wind turbine in order to keep the batteries topped up in the winter. It is a minefield of what is suitable but at least this video has helped somewhat.

      I’m not sure it will ever happen, at least not in urban settings. We can’t escape basic physics but if we could make very cheap turbines, and couple then with batteries, then it may be cost effective.

    Very interesting video. I was fascinated by the news that 'Ventum Dynamics' (a Norwegian firm) had installed 2 turbines in the UK. 1 on Skegness Pier and 1 on a factory in Spalding. It looks like air is ducted up into the vertical axis turbine reminiscent of jet engine ducting. This is more than a single dwelling would require but is applicable to blocks of flats or factories.
    I live on Anglesey and wonder about colaborating with some neighbours to share costs and benefits. We have fields and wind and a very fragile local distribution system!
    One of our local wind farm turbines caught fire in high winds! Who needs anemometers? 😉

    Thx RAL. I've looked at this for my self-build project (back-of-an-envelope feasibility 'study') having seen something similiar at Futurebuild. I'm keen to incorporate as much eco-tech to exceed the old CfSH 5 or even 6, however, my issue will be concealing the ridge turbine from the front elev street view; maybe a lower level rear roofline might work (look up 'Tommy Walsh eco house' - you'll see what I mean) though I reckon the blades would need a cross flow for wind, so this will impact the turbine's performance or not work at all. Great video as usual - you deserve more subs! Maybe consider doing a colab on a flavour-of-the-month subject with Roger 'the Rant' from SkillBuilder' to open up a wider viewership... 👍

  • @laughingachilles
    @laughingachilles Před rokem

    The ridge blade is a very interesting idea because as you say, it's unobtrusive and I imagine quite simple to install. The issue you pointed out with storage is the real problem. Installing batteries in every house is just not feasible, aside from the financial cost the amount of materials required would likely require most if not all of the lithium output on Earth. It's just not workable until some form of cheap storage using alternative materials is discovered or mass produced. Graphene based batteries would be ideal as carbon is everywhere, but the technology isn't even close at this point. Even feeding it back into the grid isn't viable because on windy days the nation would produce too much and the grid couldn't handle it. In such cases the turbine would have to stop, if local storage has been filled I mean.
    The solution is going to be some micro-generation with nuclear and gas backup. That is until we develop either storage or fusion power has a breakthrough.

    I am re building a house in the south uk and its beach front. I want to make the most of the wind turbines and solar energy. I like the ridge blade idea and the Tesup wind turbines. but would this be possible when the plans I have are half flat roof and pitched I was listening and I want to ask if the wind turbine could be fitted within the structure. Similar to having large vents for instance in the structure of the building, or would this effect the stability of the building. We do get strong winds obviously in the winter. I just havn't seen anything suitable apart from someone online making his own, which was great, more of a drum design incorporating the blades, but final product seemed a bit bigger than I would want. I was also concerned about the stability again if this was part of the building. Also the new build will be semi detached. I really think my new build would be the perfect candidate for these products. Would appreciate any info you can send my way.

    Answer the ending question. Like big architecture? Come for a tour. First small. Have you reviewed grid tie in inverters. and forget combing sysstems. I have wind and solar and hot cables. On sunny or windy days I can melt plugs so means converting to 12V to 24v to lower the ampage. . Forget combining and use a grid tie in inverter to convert to 240V AC and wire it into the mains. They bypass the cupboard under the stairs electric meter connection meter mess and plug directly into a househld plug socket. Even an extension lead and still plug other appliances into the same extension lead. They ad just a tiny bt more voltage to the system like 421 volts instead of 240v. that pushes by the mains electricx and uses their power first. They wire direct to solar panels and wind and more if checking the specs and dumploads for wind. Seperate battery system on a battery charger if you like from there. No combing. great things but might need extra plug sockets. Saves on cables overheeating because get 25-V all over. If the power drops because want an on grid system. no longer 241 volt but 240 afain and the main electrics instantly floods back in. When I make power the lectric meter runs backwards and when not making power th meter runs forward. Lower electric bill that way or by adding more batteries. Adding grris tiw in to on grid systems can let the electriic company worry on battery systems. CHECK OUT DRAx COAL POWER STATION. They crush coal to a powder They burn a football stadiuum of coal easily in a day but tasa powder coal is very volatile and explosive and then coal power runs like a car injection system. Giving coal power and accelerator pedal. Grid tie in is down coal power just pushes down on the gas. when up they can ease off on fuel instantly.
    I did just plug and play and will until complete my whole electric bill.
    here is somebdoy else.
    czcams.com/video/4pl9eNhSulw/video.html
    sammler and smaller. Boost the volatage lower the ampage.
    czcams.com/video/H42SuG83FE8/video.html
    Old systems work in many coal.
    Ignore that nucelar sign there. Exactly on big architecture.

    Grid tiw in inverteres than not need to push down on the accelrator in fact that electic little extrea voltage can eventually push all the way back to the power station. The opower station swap to batteries or your own.
    Thanks for the housing tip on structure.
    Boost the voltage, lower thae ampahe or cables melt plugs. The beauty of direct plug and play grid tie in.

    I live in a bungalow surrounded by commercial wind turbines . It is windy most of the time. I think I wouldn’t need solar at all, but accessing these types of ridge turbines seems impossible at a reasonable cost at the moment .

    What happened to this company? Neither RidgeBlade or it’s parent company are contactable. A member of my (South Oxfordshire) council has attempted to find more information directly and drawn a blank. Being Chair of the South Oxfordshire Climate Crisis Group and constantly at loggerheads with planners, the Environment Agency and politicians in general he thought this would be a good second option to solar. As you said, it’s a well paired group of ideas that complement each other. So where did this disappear too?

    I like it but i see loads of problems. Vibration isolation would need carefully thinking about. As a noise consultant, there is no such thing as vibration or noise free. Fast Rotating horizontal axle exposed to the elements, bearings will fail etc What about when a bird flies into it and knocks it out of balance. Even a few grams out of balance will be horrendous.

    Everyone who has ever studied small urban wind turbines has come to the same conclusion: it's not worth the effort. You need to be at least 5-10 meters above all surrounding houses and trees to get half decent winds. Manufacturers claiming their new turbine can better deal with "dirty" air and can start at low wind speeds are scamming you: a higher percentage of nothing is still nothing.

    • @RealLifeArchitecture
      @RealLifeArchitecture  Před rokem

      I think you are mostly correct but the amount of wind around buildings is not zero. If a wind generation system could be built cheap enough it’s efficiency wouldn’t matter. Combined wit a battery system it would store useful amounts of electricity over time. But it really would need to be dirt cheap

    As a retired electrical engineer I find the cost and maintenance requirements of a battery back up system a non-starter. With the current technology and costs they make zero financial sense. If you live on a mountain top miles away from the nearest power line OK, but otherwise they are just cost and technology for the sake of your ego.

      I'm just looking through my maintainence and care package and it says wipe down with a cloth. My ego still hasn't showed up either lol.
      With rising costs worst case scenario most people will have their money back in 10 years, more likely 7 years with a feed in tariff or even better an electric car. Then if the battery and inverter goes bang after 10 years, you technically could start again with a new inverter forget the expensive batteries and still have free warrantied solar through the day for another 15 years easily recouping the money for the potential second inverter. No brainer, just choose a reputable company and good equipment like sunsynk. Coming from a working electrician ;-)

    • @flexmaniac
      @flexmaniac Před 9 měsíci

      As a current and practising electrical engineer, I disagree.
      Granted, you have to have everything sized right..
      but having done so in combination with running an EV, and crucially, an appropriate tariff for low-cost overnight grid import and decent export rate, my solar&battery system ROI is down to ~4.5 years.
      There is no maintenance as such, but even if the battery got weak (they don't just fail 100%), or the inverter needed replacing, that is easy to fix.
      I'm with you on wind turbine though, it's not there yet.
      Still looking for my ego, I guess that is all in the first sentence of the post.
