    I think you must have had what's called a 'passive' DVI-I to VGA adaptor. As you found out, it requires a DVI-I output from your graphics card. That would be a card capable of both analogue & digital video signal output. Those extra pins that you removed (C1 to C4) are actually the analogue signal pins that get passed straight through to the VGA side of a passive adaptor. So by removing them it meant the VGA cable to the monitor was not really connected to anything anymore. With your newer DVI-D card which is digital output only, such passive adaptors can only be used to convert to HDMI for example, but not to analogue VGA.
    I see you can actually buy DVI-D to VGA adaptors, but these are advertised as 'active' converters (not passive). Since there is no analogue input pins on the DVI-D side, they must be doing an active conversion of the received digital signal to analogue VGA for output. I've been reading the cheap ones don't work very well with high resolutions etc and reading some amazon reviews it looks like they also have trouble with sleep/wake functionality. Thanks, this video helped me understand all this better.

    Needed HDMI to DVI-D but the cable oddly featured a DVI-A plug. Which is odd if you recall that HDMI only carries digital signals. And the DVI-A plug cannot be plugged into a monitor featuring a DVI-D connection. Physically doesn't fit due to the extra analog pins. I simply pulled the 5 analog pins from the DVI-A plug and it worked just fine for me. The pins were surprisingly easy to pull because they were not connected to anything anyway.

  • @DB-47
    @DB-47 Před 5 lety +4

    This cannot work by principe. DVI-D socket on graphics card or other source can transmit digital signal only. Pins that you removed are supposed to carry analog signal and work also as foolproofing to prevent inserting DVI-A or DVI-I to VGA passive adapter into DVI-D socket which cannot output analog signal ;)
    For your card you should use DisplayPort to VGA port

    • @ahgcomegaguardian5575
      @ahgcomegaguardian5575 Před 8 měsíci

      I did it and it worked. But only if the adapter is not to vga, since vga is analog and those pins that he broke provide the analog signal. I did that to a dvi to hdmi adapter and it worked flawlessly (I also had to make the big pin narrower cause the dvi-i big pin is wider than the big dvi-d port, I guess it's a marketing strategy for you to buy another adapter instead of simply breaking/ pulling out the 4 analog pins. I pulled them out with a narrow long forceps and they came in a piece after a little struggle)

  • @bobjohn2550
    @bobjohn2550 Před 7 lety +5

    No dude?!?! You just ruined a perfectly fine adapter! What you need to have a DVI-I port on your video card vga to work and to be able to get an analog signal out of it. Because VGA is an analog display medium. The converter you dremeled the hell out of was the correct adapter you needed for it to work however your video card does not have the DVI-I (digital and analog) port, it only has the DVI-D (digital only) DVI port.
    Get a Hdmi monitor and then get a DVI to HDMI converter and your pc will work cause HDMI is a digital unlike VGA
