      I’m new at least to learning all the notes. Once you know the notes how do you use this in you solo or guitar playing? Thanks

      Steve Allen To solo you have to play the notes in the key you are soloing in. For beginners look up the minor pentatonic scale. Once you memorized the first shape you can solo in it.

    Thank you, Tony! This is a great Exercise. I bought my first guitar at 52 years old. I Tweeted the GREAT Nile Rodgers & asked him how to learn to play guitar. He Replied: " Pick one up & start playing it." i play it every day, even if it's just a few riffs. Hopefully, I'll get good enough to play onstage one day.

    I just found you. A week or so ago. I am a older guy who has dabbled with the guitar for more than 5 decades. Working construction for 4 decades didn’t help. Tendinitis in my arms caused me to have to put down the guitar for a long time. I am looking forward to learning like never before. Finger picking is something that has always appealed to me. I have to overcome arthritis but so it will take me awhile. Thanks for being here.

    This has helped me greatly. I played guitar in the 80’s and have had a stroke since. I recently started to play again and this has helped my left hand (fretting) a lot . Thank you!

    Cool exercise. I used to do these when i was into fast shredding (still am). I would add that when you get to the 12th fret, do the same excerise but start with your pinky and work your way back to the 1th fret.

  • @DaveSwart
    @DaveSwart Před 3 lety +11

    I’ve been playing for 25 years and love this. I never focused on lead - I became addicted to Dave Matthew’s early on and have been stuck since. Considering this exercise is pretty similar to a couple of his songs (seriously), I have no trouble with the left hand. Where I’m struggling so far is not cheating on the up-stroke, down-stroke pattern. I do what I feel is easiest instead of sticking strictly to up down up down…. But here’s to breaking bad/limiting habits! Thank you for this!!

  • @MichaelJamesGallagherAuthor

    Love all the little exercises to keep the fingers limber. I hadn't pick up a guitar in some time, not that I'm any good, but I try. I took the exercise from bottom of the neck up. It helped stretch the fingers just a bit each pass. That you.

    This made me realize my up-picking while ascending is horrendous compared to while descending. I can do it ok when going from B to E string but going from the B to the G and the upstrokes falter. Great exercise

  • @MrAceCraft
    @MrAceCraft Před 4 lety +1

    My son brought me an idea for an exercise by singing his favourite song he learned in preliminary school. It goes like this: I-I-V;I-I-V;I-I-V-V-VI-V-II. These are intervals I play for any root note on the high GBE strings with my pointing, third and pinky fingers. This exercise has a melody in it, so it’s pleasing to my sons ears. :-)
