  • Turning 180 degrees over Lake Chelan to final landing at the Stehekin State Airport (6S9) in the 1959 Cessna Skylane. Highly recommended backcountry mountain destination in the Northern Cascades of Washington! Gorgeous campsite along the river is a quick walk away for pilot use. And not miss the Stehekin Bakery - borrow a bike and ride into town.

I lived for one summer here and worked as a white water raft guide. During that summer I witnessed two plane crashes, one on the strip and a Maul Rocket float plane flip on take off during a choppy water windy day. One of the best summers of my life, not so much for a few others. Fantastic country up there and the people are incredibly talented!

I'm jealous - the entire Lake Chelan area is quite special and I am really thankful I got to fly there (as fire season was getting pretty hairy). It's easily some of the most beautiful country I've seen.

I've never been so nervous watching a landing

It was well-controlled but definitely a pretty challenging strip to land at! Those trees are tall.
