  • HOW TO COME ALIVE with Norman Mailer explores the rollercoaster life of America’s most controversial and bestselling author of the 20th Century, Norman Mailer. Propelled by his tremendous ego and contrarian spirit, Mailer’s ceaseless visibility in the public eye lasted 6 decades, during which he had 6 tumultuous marriages, 9 beloved children, 11 bestsellers, 3 arrests, and 2 Pulitzer Prizes. Prophet, hedonist, violent criminal, literary outlaw, and social provocateur, Mailer’s ideas about love, anger, fear, and courage cut to the core of human nature, are more relevant than ever today, and point to a prescription for waking ourselves up, shaking free of society’s expectations, and coming alive as a people.
The first project with full access to Mailer’s family and their archive, the film unearths a treasure trove of intimate and never-before-seen footage, outtakes, audio recordings, and interviews from throughout his life. Mailer lays himself bare, foibles and all. As a lover, fighter, rabble-rouser, and perhaps the last true American public intellectual, he seeks most of all to become a bolder, better human being and encourages us to do the same - to think adventurously, speak fearlessly, and care less about the response... or risk a doomed future.
HOW TO COME ALIVE with Norman Mailer is a Zeitgeist Films release in association with Kino Lorber and will open in theaters on June 28, 2024. For more information visit zeitgeistfilms....

Oh, Robin Williams would have been the perfect person to play Mailer in a biopic.

Have you read his books? Your use of "looney tunes" tells me no.

"There's a certain passion that is dying in American life, a pervasive distaste for bitter argument, for controversy" is the dumbest statement I've heard today.

No it's not. Take look at America's political dialogues, debates and discussions in 2024. We are living in a shitstorm and everyone is afraid of speaking the truth. We ignore corruption, genocides, and the targeted destruction of an individual's character, honor and reputation. Then we wonder why our political representation, and system, are so mediocre.
Wake up "Bubble Boy". Norman Mailer was not right on all matters, but he was spot-on about modern America's growing disinterest, indifference and indebtedness to the ever-growing smallness of life for tens of millions of Americans. And their numbers are getting larger everyday.
Hence, how much longer can this dark and destructive trend last before there is an outright rebellion throughout the nation?
Mailer understood desperate people. It is what made Mailer worth reading.

@@user-hb1by8wq4b So the "Wake up Bubble Boy" is the best way to make your point? Isn't that diminishing, snotty clapback a huge part of the problem?

@@lauramendoza5938 Not really. "Dumbest statement" from a clearly brilliant man is more offensive. People do need to wake up. Maybe it wasn't couched in the "nicest" terms, but someone needed to say it.

the fact people can't see the way the world is honestly hurts me. He was clearly ahead of his time, so I think he would have hated it if you said this. I should know I'm his grandson!
