  • Emulators Contest. Which one is faster in running applications?
Tests were made using MS-Foxpro programming language
    Windows 10 / An old laptop (2013)
    ----------------------------
    Conclusion:
    * DOSBox and DOSBox-x cannot compete with vDos and vDosPlus when it comes to applications.
( It would be interesting to test DOSBox-x running applications on emulutated PC's (Windows 3.x, 9x and Me). Would it perform better? )
    -----
    * vDos was about 12 to 42% faster than vDosPlus across the different tests
    -----
    * vDosPlus has enhanced features and a superior base shell (4DOS - much more powerful than DOS).
    It can:
    - deal with files outside the mounted drive
    - trigger Windows batches, apps and resources
    - exchange data with Clipboard (internally or with Windows clipboard and files)
    - make use of powerful 4DOS commands, internal variables and variable functions
    - handle color setting (millions of colors)
    ----------------------------
    #dosbox
    #dosbox-x

    -----------
Why do I appreciate DOS applications so much?
    * homemade solutions for everyday tasks
    * leisure time programming (presently I am developing many types of text filters and cognitive games, which demand very simple elements (squares, ASCII arrows, colors, letters and numbers).
Fourteen years ago, I was looking for a commercial automation system with all the related features, like statistics, bad-debt control (installment sales), credit risk, payment control etc. The many systems I tested then seemed to me very rigid, designed more to meet the programmer convenience than the user's.
Futhermore, well-fed databases allow us tons of sofisticated analisys and only a homemade program would handle this potencial. Rich, personalized features were not implemented in any of those systems.
At that time, graphic languages obviously already existed, but a modern user interface would only be desirable if accompanied with the simplest syntax and the quickest learning curve possible.
So I ended up choosing MS-DOS Foxpro which is a very simple language, with an amazingly fast database search/filtering.
An apparently unimportant detail that made me choose an old fashion, deprecated language was the ability to keep my hands on keyboard all time (although it also handles mouse-clicking).
With the passing of the years I begin to realize how many things can be done with a so 'simple' tool - infinite.

Until today could not understand why Microsoft removed DOS support if its so popular. Kudos to the creators of Dosbox and VDos for bringing DOS back from the dead.

DOS is of interest to a very small portion of Windows users. DOS support was provided by NTVDM on Windows 32-bit. Although NTVDM would also run on Windows 64-bit, it was then forced to switch to emulation (like DOSBox/vDos). That was however that slow and buggy, Microsoft dropped DOS support.

Agree with you. Were it not for DOS emulators, I would be forced to throw away a huge amount of work. As for your question, none other than the creator of vDOS has just answered it.

Tried DosBox-X, but dos compatibility is sketchy. I went back to vanilla DosBox because DosBox-X crashes with simple demos like Fire or Plasma that were compiled with Tasm/Tlink, and which work fine on actual hardware and in DosBox. The only meaningful feature added to DosBox-X is the Ctrl + Scroll Lock handler (needed by programs like GW Basic).

I hope Dosbox-x can evolve in the future. Currently I think it's only worth it for very specific programs, like the case of an acquaintance of mine whose only interest is an old text editor. He loves dosbox-x, perhaps due some feature like that you mentioned.

Well done video! Is CLIP: a variable related to clipboard?

Exactly, it is a 4DOS variable, can be used on a variety of special, unthinkable ways

In the vdplus part you got clip: from windows environment. Could it be done the opposite way?

I am on an Android tablet with the Magic DosBox free app installed and i like to make very special batch files to run inside DOS/DosBox. I made some video(no speech) to show how it works. Have fun.😊

Can I use DOS 30 with vdosplus?

      @text_mode  Před rokem +1

No, vdosplus is based on 4DOS 7.50, which is a kind of super enhanced DOS.
