  • The west wall of the 1930s farmhouse is in bad shape. It sags, isn't straight and has lot of mold and rot. We begin reframing the wall to lift it up, straighten it out. When nate re-sides the house, the old lumber will be removed.

The wall with huge sliding doors - I loved when Jim said, I wouldn’t worry about that, just close it up and frame it. Nate worries so much and probably would stress. Thank you Jim for helping Nate. This house is a TASK with many underlying structure issues. ❤❤❤The renovation

This is awesome. This wall needed to be redone, and y'all are doing it. That is wonderful. So much better going forward.

Lifting that wall was scarey. Jim knows his stuff.

Jim does NOT know his stuff. He doesn't know the difference between "Tension" and "Pressure".

That was a hugely technical, painstaking and exacting piece of work. Fantastic experience that you have tapped into with Jim but you too Nate, learning so much as you go through each phase of the project. Phenomenal work to achieve a very strong and as much of a future-proof structure as you can with timber! Well done on all the hard work Jim and Nate.

That was such an interesting video for several reasons: the logistics of your task, the dynamics between you both, seeing the damage of the original structure of the house, and most of all the way your confidence is growing by the day as you work with Jim.
I know you don’t like editing but my goodness this video shows how talented you are. I loved the first couple of minutes especially.

I didn’t understand at 13:10~ when the numbers were being said but for a second it sounded to me like an auctioneer calling out numbers.

Are the old houses made with redwood or is it a different type of wood? I’m curious to look at a side by side of the stud you took out vs one made today. I remember my dad replacing a rotted bottom plate in our 1926 house. He said the old wood was so hard. He had to use screws because he found it too hard to pound a nail through it, by hammer of course. He saved as many good pieces of old growth he could when removing a small wall. Used it to restore a window. 😊

At 13:35 the Jim patted his temporarily installed post, said "There is a little more tension on it...". He was referring to the "Pressure" on it from the house frame, and from the hydraulic jack underneath it. If he is an engineer or architect, he should know the difference between "Tension" and "Pressure", buit seemingly he does not. They are opposites. "Pressure" pushes. "Tension" pulls. Shame on him.
