Just out of curiosity, what happens in a worst case scenario while crossing a shallow narrows channel like you did and you have total propulsion loss(I'm a professional pilot, I have to worry about things like that)? Are there emergency services nearby to tow you to depth or are you just going to end up high and dry, and would that be devastating to a boat like Renko? I'm assuming she would end up on her side and possibly take on water before floating when the tide comes back up...
Part of the reason you leave an hour before the high tide is so if you do run aground the water is still coming up so you can back away from the shallow section. It is also important to make sure that the following day's high tide is higher rather than lower. If you do get stuck you can run anchors out and lines to trees to stop the boat tipping over at low tide.
I highly recommend the hookah system. When my tanks tanks expired 6 yrs ago I built a hookah system that paid for itself in 4yrs. I used quality equipment, 350PSI dive hose, Hookah regs, a spray painters filter pack, 75m hose and 1 1/2hp oil free compressor to dive down 20m. I can send more info if you like. No regrets.
As good a video as this long-time viewer has ever seen you post. Your editing was wonderfully fluid. The lightning flashes, the two sunsets and the entire reef snorkeling session were just first-rate videography.
Bravo.
Thanks mate, glad you enjoyed it. :)
agree wholeheartedly!
I was starting to wonder where the professional video editor was berthed on Renko! Brilliant.
2:41 - lmfao - went for the (classy new awning) $9 not the $4 one - no expense spared - I love the deafening crackle at about 3knots of wind! You got this, Stu! Cheers-
Christmas is getting closer, might even get an upgrade from Santa. ;)
@@DangarMarine - _"ho-ho-ho!"_ Cheers-
Wow, down under they even use their charts upside down. Stu is a genuine Australian. :O
I shouldn't have been lazy. I walked to the other side of the table so I wasn't casting a shadow over it! :)
It’s so the Americans can understand lol
The Detroit is Sounding GREAT 👍👍👍
Just a beautiful trip. Makes me long for the sea again.
Neat to see Great Keppel Island again, I was lucky enough to get there in 1986!
I was there about the same time. A storm had just gone through washing a power boat up on the beach, however, I was anchored at the tip of Curtis then onto KI to see the damage.
Your motor is humming a beautiful note
Saturday night, no football, nothing on Netflix and still in lockdown. Perfect viewing.
Lockdown where?
@@marks.c4753 Sydney
@@jatflash That sucks I live in Florida haven't had lockdown in like over a year. The president can't mandate shit to the states only governor has that power and thank God most governor's in the U.S aren't liberals. Take care.
35 years ago, I did a 2 day dive trip out of Cairns with a guy who ran a dive resort at Great Kepple! Great memories
very nice thanks love the nautical chart reading
Hi Stew, very very envious of you at the moment, love cruising done many a journey motoring. Thanks for sharing, very informative.
The nautical chart reading lesson was very interesting. Keep it nerdy Stu and congrats on 200k subs.
As long as Renko doesn't become a sub.
Thanks mate. I do enjoy a bit of chart work everynow and then. :)
What a cool extended vacation, you’ve finally got everything you need and your boat is looking quite smart, thanks so much for the tour!
Thanks Nena, it is great to have the boat getting close to being finished that's for sure. I wish it felt more like a vacation though, Vicki keeps saying, "When are you going to stop working seven days a week?" Lots of filming, editing and website development going on at the moment!
I enjoyed the trip. Renko is looking good and sounds so hearty. You must be enjoying cruising and using Renko instead of working and laboring on her. Happy voyages Stu ENJOY....thanks for sharing
Thanks! It is great to be using the boat more than working on it finally.
The snorkeling beat is dope af
Splendid episode - cruising in paradise, from my perspective.
Thanks Cliff!
The 4-71 pushes you along pretty good. Nice video, thanks!
1:38 20 mm Oerlikon type and Hispano-Suiza guns were incredible common on Commonwealth ships in WW2.
They were. One of the things I really like about metal detecting is researching finds afterwards. It's amazing where that research takes you and the things you learn.
Nice to see a bit of legacy navigation methods in use.
Lmao! Good music choice for the snorkeling! Feel like it's time you get a red cap.
Definitely!
Awesome video 📹 captain
Your living life now Stu.. 👍👍
Thanks for the update Stu.
Have a good week.🙂
The Detroit sounds amazing really great job doing her up slowly slowly getting there congrats
Thanks mate.
Love the navigating tips and the visual of the narrows trip. Happy and safe cruising ahead !
Thanks, you too!
I had a issue with my canopy once on my old boat. I ended up buying a telescopic ladder taking it apart mounting the poles to the corners of the wheel house with light aluminum brackets connected between the 2 in order to hold up the fabric. My wife sowed pockets in the fabric for the brackets works like a charm extending in and out
So glad to see you using paper charts! I got my inshore and coastal navigation certificates using only them and have always seen GPS as just a handy backup. I get real pleasure out of penciling in the course and then ticking off waypoints 😃.
Me too. I love paper charts. When I made the table in the wheel house I made a special section for them all to live.
My Grandfather worked at the Footscray ammunition factory and Maribyrnong munitions factory, in the 40s and 50s.
really enjoying seeing you living on the boat.
Thanks Stu
Very good really enjoyed this episode
Man, your channel has come a long way since I first started watching. The video is top notch, the sound has improved immensely, overlays and video effects, Renko is looking great and I swear even your teeth are whiter. Looking forward to seeing what you get up to next.
Thanks Scotty! There definitely is a lot to learn about filming at the same time as doing all the work but it is going to be nice to be able to focus more on the videos in the coming year.
Nice trip…the engine sounds really solid…stay safe and on course…
Love when you have subtitles on and it says 'Hey there, Dan Gastro here ' 😁
Beware of the Curry, always enjoy it when we pop out the charts, next we need a sextet reading 😆 safe travels Stu, Jeff in LA USA
The Detroit sound plus some wave action while under way will make a great ASMR video. :-)
Living the dream mate awesome video 👍🏼
Quality stuff, thank you Stu!
Great video as always Stu. You folks are just into early spring while we Canadians are heading for winter. Winter on the prairies is long, dark and dammed cold. What you folks call winter is a ride in the park compared to ours. Cheers enjoy the results of all of your hard work. I envy you.
Stu, nice nod to Steve Zissou in your soundtrack choice. Esteban would be so proud.
Here;s your gun. Everyone gets a gun.
Prayers for Australia
Such a lovely part of the world. Looks like all of the systems on Renko are working faultlessly. All that hard work has well and truly paid off.
I was interested in the chart mini tutorial. And I assume you can just throw a bucket over the side at Curry Stain and pull up lunch. Cheers.
Ineed you can. We gabbed some leaves off the poppadom tree before we left the island too. ;)
As someone who's been watching since you bought Renko, it's great to see her out on the water doing what boats should do. Love the sea turtle footage too.
Oh, and thanks for the chart lesson too, gotta keep passing on that type of knowledge lest it be lost in the tech age.
Thanks mate. It is great to finally be able to enjoy the boat after all this work. :)
Love the curry reef.
Loved this--wish I was there as fall closes in here in Ohio!
Great stuff! Thanks.
Excellent
Great Video Stu. Thanks for taking me along for the cruise!
Amazing scenes in this one... the last sunset and the little fish swimming in front of the turtle were standouts, you could hang them on the wall. Top notch video and I enjoyed the technical stuff too, cheers!
Keep the turtles coming Stu! Great episode. 🇨🇦
Stu, another great offering from you. I do enjoy watching well produced, well edited and well crafted youtube videos and your’s has always been high quality from day 1. Keep up the good work please!
I live not far from Gladstone. I have worked on the wharfs there a fair bit and it’s amazing to see it from this point of view. Definitely motivating me to get out on the water! Only got a 3.9 tinny but dreaming of the day I can get out further 🙂
Stu you are living a,blessed life. Thanks for sharing it with those of us that are land locked. 🤔
😉😉😁😁👍👍😉
Hey there again from the Oil Patch in Central WY!
I just wanted to Thank You so much for this episode!
The scenes of the turtles, the myriad fish species together, and the turtle munching on something in the coral really made me smile! I hope you'll post MORE footage of your time down there, because it is nothing less than amazing to a former skin diver from Puget Sound, WA, who finished up in the Rocky Mountains of Wyoming!
I've used Hookah systems in Gold Dredging before and they REALLY make a difference in ease of movement in most instances, HOWEVER, above and beyond the usual constraints (for you, that would be diving wrecks, coral outcroppings, and rocky ridges with crevices, plus everything in between; ie, heavy kelp beds, submerged debris), make sure you consider an emergency level 'rebreather' unit (yes, I know, EXPENSIVE, but given how much time you intend to spend in the water, how much is your life worth throughout all those hours of filming and exploration?), or an emergency 10-15 minute oxy tube/canister WHEN your oxy line gets cut/impinged (crushed by falling/dislocated rock, submerged debris, or the rare occasion of a shark/cuda saying "Say, that funny looking skinny thing floating in the water just might be tasty! Let's nibble and see!", or a fitting that looked good up top suddenly develops 'a leak'!
There is of course the Depth Limitations of a Hookah system, based upon the HP of your motor(s) and the Max Press. of your compressor. Throw in the size of your Oxy Reservoir (which will play havoc at times with your line and your fittings depending on current/wind/everything else in the water; in the case gold dredging it can be, ducks, geese, otters "Ooooohhhh, shiny, shiny....", and the Hookah System provides plenty of drawbacks, while offering fantastic freedom of movement, CHEAP (in the long run) oxygen, which means more time under the water (and more filming).
Personally, given what you've said you want to do, I'd take several moments (with a really good fifth of your fave distillation in a fine lead crystal glass) over a series of several weeks (which will definitely mean several fifths) to a few months, to seriously consider a Dedicated ReBreather Unit, along with a small waist (small of back) fitted Emergency Canister in case the ReBreather goes tits up.
The ReBreather would give you the best of both worlds; from real Scuba Tanks and from a Hookah System: duration and freedom of movement, with FEWER (and this is the BIG advantage) opportunities for something to go heinously and deadly wrong (lines of the hookah system mostly), while cutting down on scuba tank/fittings problems (change overs, multiple regulators, multiple gauges, etc.).
Bottom line: decide what would work BEST under the water (WITHOUT considering costs at this point), THEN add in for consideration costs compared to limitations of each system (including an Onboard Oxy Compressor to refill tanks related to costs and upkeep, and space taken).
Well, that's my fresh water 2 cents worth from the middle of Nowhere Wyoming! Thanks again for the great video!
Cheers from the Oil Patch in Central WY
You're welcome! :)
More beautiful underwater pictures - fantastic!
Took me a while to realise curry stain was actually a curry stain, I just thought it must be a reef or something lol
Unfortunately it is the real thing. I normally look after charts better than that but this one got leaked on... :(
The curry stain is actually coral spawn.
Well aren't you the fancy boat not running agound with all your posh equipment. Lol good on ya! Cheers.
If ever I built a boat I think I'd just transfer everything over!
Really enjoyed the video overlay which makes the presentation more interesting and entertaining. Also enjoyed your video both topside and underwater. Did some freeze frame capture with the hopes of attempting drawing them later - ended up with some stunning pictures, so thanks for that. I do love living the sailing life with you and your wife. I bet she has her HEY STU MOMENTS on this trip - just saying.
Nice one! I'll have to setup a Facebook page or something again one day so viewers can share pictures.
Thanks for taking us along!
Next time you're near a green shed you could always buy some of the shade sails they sell.
Great video. as a resident of Gladstone. Yes it is Auckland creek leads into the Marina. Keep up the great videos, Graham is Fantastic Help.
Thanks mate, it's a great marina you guys have there. :)
Use a 4wd awning that rolls out. I have one in my boat. It mounts into my rod holders on the roof. So its removable.. 4wd super centre sell them cheap.
I've looked at a couple of 4WD awnings. The 270 degree ones are pretty cool but I may need to re-enforce the main awning first to take the load.
Thank you for taking us along, I'd say I'm a bit jealous, I wishI had the stones to do something like this.
Glad you made it safely through that curry stain!
Glad to see you using the boat.and going on trips! I remember when you were repairing the Hull.
It is nice to have most of the hardwork behind me now and be able to start using the boat.
I love to watch your video man you're doing a fantastic job keep up the good work
Great video! Good mix of technical, educational and sightseeing a bit of something for everyone. 👍
I used to live in yeppoon, hope you had a chance to get into the cruising yacht club in the Keppel marina, i haven't been there in a few years but it was a beautiful spot for a beer.
Looks like we will be heading over there to refuel and buy more food so I'll be sure to check it out.
Thanks for the share on the Fitzroy, I need to go through there up to Rocky in a few months time, any other tips from all are welcome
I love Zissou on the wall
The music at the end gave it more of a mood like you are trying to break into an underwater bank.
Good mix of adventure, natural beauty and grease monkeying. Enjoyed the vid, thanks.
Stu, you told such a good story on this video. The nineteen minutes seemed like 90 seconds. The icing on the cake would have been lucky enough to have jumped some cattle. Think how Damien would tease you! Great video, great project, awesome channel.
Thanks Kevin, glad you enjoyed it. :
Great adventure. All that hard work is paying off.
Awesome
What an amazing life you lead!
The jams were totally team zissou approved
It looks beautiful up there Thanks for taking us along Stu
Great vid as always
As always thanks so much for this episode. Stay safe Stu
Wait ... was this one of those episodes where nothing broke and nothing needed fixing? That's pretty good! Enjoyed the Zissou themed snorkeling bit the most.
Thanks Randy, glad you made the Zissou connection!
Bungees make good awning rope, the elasticity helps stop the corners ripping in a breeze...
Great video. Very entertaining and educational.
Perfect timing for a new video ☺️,👍
Excellent video, glad to see the boat upgrades are working well.
Very good. from NZ
Good episode Stu certainly one of your best looking forward to your next leg of your trip
Great content as always. Thanks Stew.
Excellent video, love the trip looking forward to the next episode. Stay safe and afloat.
Love your work Stu!
Another great video Stu .
Great video - thanks!
Great videos mate and very informative
The music has a very life aquatic feel awesome
Great video Stu , life looks good there 👍🏻enjoy , keep safe
