it's about damn time tbh. however this still requires the kids to be honest when signing up, which, like everywhere else on the internet, is never gonna happen. This kind of situation will never end until there's a government x router verification system. like a driver's license, but for accessing a separate "adult internet." i imagine a system where they send you a box that hooks up between your router and the outside connection, it has no tracking or communication equipment of its own. it's just a card reader. when a device on the network wants to access the adult internet, follow the prompt on screen then slide the card. like guns, parents will be responsible for making sure their kids don't get access to their cards. the prompt that pops up on screen will have an option to close the window without sliding a card, which puts you on the "family friendly internet" mode. if any adult finds a kid on there and abuses them, then it'll make it clear that it's entirely the adult's fault, because doing "adult" things on the family mode, such as being lewd, is illegal. just like public indecency is irl. this seems scary and authoritarian, but it has to happen in order to protect everyone. in our current system, kids can be seen as liars and story tellers and feel ashamed to come forward with abuse. while on the other side, genuinely innocent adults that had no idea can have their entire lives permanently destroyed with no way to clean their record. with this clear separation of internet spaces that can't be so easily muddled, it makes clear who gets punished for what by being sure who's in the wrong. an adult crossing into family mode and being indecent. and the parents who let their kid get access to the adult mode and lie their way into trouble. maybe to ease people's minds, the card reader device could have a clear case which shows a very tiny and simple circuit board that could only possibly hold a card reader and access approval amount of hardware and software. these devices would be free and offer a once per year quarter price replacement, with full fees for more replacements. if routers don't detect a card device, it only allows family mode, because it only can. adult mode is exclusively accessed only by government issued card reader devices. and of course, hacking/bypassing government protected property is a federal crime, so only crazy people would risk it. maybe a better more user friendly way could be devised, but i think this is probably the best option possible. it would at least be enough to keep everyone safe until a better system comes along. i really hate forcing new members to discord servers for a picture of their id or else deny them access. make the government do it.

Yeh, some minor showed up at one of my movie night It was a borderline 18+ session, watching stuff like Sausage party etc... I'm not great at social stuff and I think I confused him with someone else who was much older. Some people saw it and started "having concerns" about what I was doing. It was a couple of days later I learned about it (the hard way), I was pissed. It's the kind of things that turns me paranoid and start reading the bios of everyone I see online just to ensure crap like this doesn't happen again.
I don't feel comfortable around certain content. I don't feel comfortable around NSFW stuff, and it can actually cause me serious panic or anxiety if I'm not expecting it. This feature will be great for people like me as well.

Words can't even begin to express just how happy and excited I am for this change. I hate it when kids get a hold of NSFW avatars or join 18+ worlds and you have to generally guesstimate how old someone is by their voice because a lot of little shits like to lie. Generally I don't think VRC is safe at all for kids, they should not be on this game and I can see them just making new adult accounts to get around this but damn this new feature is so nice. I'm so happy the issue has been attempted at now.

It is just a big shame that it allows kids to roam free and be exposed to inappropriate content with consequence or moderation; we're not their god damn babysitters! I still wish you would give it a try though and experience the great work the user-base put into their worlds; explore the featured worlds and avoid joining public lobbies, only Friends+ and up instances, and keep to your own social groups for the most part!
The internet as a whole isn't safe for kids. It is no different then any public space, you don't let your child wander randomly alone. There are adult shops, bad people, and threats.
Personally i would just be sitting next to that guy in my home world and be like: "First time spending night alone?" "..." "Dont worry, you'll get used to it. I've been doing that for the past 3 years! 😃"
Kinda glad they’re adding this feature. I ain’t been on VRC in quite some time but I remember being really uncomfortable when I’d be getting drunk with my friends during the pandemic and actual children would walk in while I’m pounding down my 8th PBR of the night.
I’m very happy with this new feature. I know of at least one minor that spoke about how they enjoyed lying about their age and tricking adults into ERP with them. 😡

I have no idea if that was honesty or fear of the consequences back then, but I remember being way too scared to ever lie about my age when registering to websites and games back when I was a minor. Only moment I really felt sad about it though was when games from Electronic Arts prevented you to play online if you were below 16 :P Anyway, that's a good and necessary change.
Finally. I'm so tired of running into kids wearing inappropriate avatars, or grown adults literally exposing children to these things without a care and arguing against it, saying the kids don't belong there. For many kids and adults alike, VRChat is a stress free way to have a social experience and find like minded friends. Nope, hard disagree! VRChat is too tainted to be appropriate for minors anymore! Adults make up a majority of the user base because a lot of them use VR, which kids usually don't. My way, it should be 18+ period, no exceptions! They can go play Rec Room and make friends there for all I care!

This will only work imo if they also introduce proper ID checks. I'm sorry, it's too easy to lie about your age on the internet, and at this point we need the ID system like that. Sure, there are ways to get around it, but it's on average much safer to have proper ID checks as part of your age gate stuff. I say this as someone who has been Ided before getting NSFW commissions/ going into some nsfw servers fyi. ID is a good way to VERIFY if someone is actually saying the truth on their age.

People are thinking that this is just like any birthdate you enter on any website. They didn't know this was coming. They weren't smart enough to have lied when it would have mattered, maybe some were. However now, they have a huge friends list, hundreds of hours in the game, and have to create a whole new account. Which brings with it, trust issues. Not just the trust between friends when they see you show up with a totally different account (which would already be setting off some red flags), but now your trust rank is reset. Most kids in that situation, are probably just going to make 2 accounts, but good luck starting over.
Read the update logs I got 2 months till I'm 18 so I'm hoping vr chat pulls a vr chat and takes a while but imo they r gonna release the update but not change their TOS so u may tag it as NSFW but they are still going to ban you what I'm saying is they are using an update to Crack down on NSFW stuff but I also see this as a good thing
I'm glad about this change for a few reasons there's no longer an excuse to don't wear that Avatar kids might see it the kids really want to see it we'll just put in an older age but that's on their end at that point

It's a nice feature, even though I have to say that I know a few very adult thinking minors. Minors that, due to thinking and acting rather grown up, have had problems to find people of similar age for friends. And that had problems to find like-minded people because they were avoiding and blocking them once they heard of the age, even when only SFW stuff was done and talked about anyway. In these cases the grown ups that blocked minors for being minors were not worth to be befriended in my opinion (legal stuff as reason left out, since that's out of everyone's control) And that while I've met several grown ups 40+ that should not touch alcohol, stay away from NSWF and other things because they are mentally not prepared for it. Sadly it's a rather huge bunch, even though it is far less in VRC than in RL. While I in general support this system I do dislike the people that made some minors lie about their age in the first place. The minors I met would not have joined in drinking, they would have stayed with juice or lemonade. They would have face-palmed if an ERP avatar runs around. Please don't judge people only by physical age. If you had a good connection even though they were minors, just keep it.

This is exactly why I likely won't ever go to public spaces but i will absolutely set up my filters since the tools have been provided (finally). Spoofing will always happen but at least the devs seem to be arsed enough to make an effort 👌 I suspect the issue might get worse now that secondhand Quest IIs are tanking in price with the Quest III being a thing now. At the risk of sounding like an absolute, draconian arse; I feel like if they want to play the spoof-my-age game then make the risk of loosing be as detrimental as possible, send a ping to meta and have them brick the device until they can provide proof the user is of age or from a parental figure whos willing to chaperone the device to get it unbricked
Content gating should take into consideration ages of consent in specific countries across the world. In Europe 15 and 16 are the most frequently valid ages and now people over the age of consent, but under 18 will be unable to see NSFW avatars of their friends or bfs / gfs, whose they can legally meet IRL for NSFW purposes. I don't like how vrc pushes that high age on everyone else. My friend made some NSFW avatar when he was 17. Come on. Everything else is right. Content gating based on users' preferences is a very good idea and I'm curious, why wasn't it implemented earlier. Now it will definitely make filtering users into night clubs easier.
Hopefully the penalty for lying about age on vrc gets a bit more severe with this as well. Like an ip ban or console/device ban from vrc or such, would help keep the lying down since the only way to get back would be to get a new device which would not be an option for most people lying about said age in the first place. Cause lying about ya age can have major consequences for others and yaself.

The problem I have with certain age-gating ideas is that in some cases it's used to ban certain things that either might be necessary (abortion), or aren't harmful (LGBT+ content)
i see this as an absolute win honestly, and if a minor is lying about their age its as simple as reporting and or blocking them (hopefully the reporting system isnt going to be entirely out of wack after this lol)
I unfortunately live in a hot climate without AC, so I can't use VR for more than an hour usually. So I haven't been on VRC in a while... If you find out someone in an adult-oriented world has lied about their age, there is a function to report them on it right? Because if so, then it'd be up to us to weed them out as necessary.
Would've been nice to have this feature a while ago. It won't remove it all of course, but it'll remove this kind of scenario and many others from happening a lot more. I've seen quite a few issues that needed to be resolved in my time on VRChat. Now I got a group of people that are all able to drink or older, so now I don't have the many many headaches of the differing age groups interacting with each other.
I was groomed on SL as a child on more than one occasion. And this was AFTER they instituted age gating on that platform. I'm hoping they do a better job on VRC lol.
This is actually not really that helpful for combatting intentional malpractice by those under the age of 18. Assuming they're competent enough to always lie about their age on websites, even when this is fully rolled out this does not hinder them in the least. It's still quite a good change for adults who just don't want to see that stuff, and for kids who are conscientious enough to avoid that stuff, myself included. Just- if you are in adult circles, don't use this as an excuse to drop all other safeguards. Stay vigilant, be responsible in public worlds and be sure to exchange identification if you're doing "adult activities".
I probably gonna be annoying some of my friends bc I am literally 17, don’t believe I lied making my account may have. They all know I am 17 but most don’t care as it is only a few months before I am 18.
I don’t like politics but I think it should be said that lying about your age when you’re a minor should have real monetary consequences. (Parents get a severe notice and fine)

That's a nasty double-edge sword to have to dance with but I totally see your POV; principally for the legal ramifications that can come of it for the stranger(s) involved. On the other hand, it can be a slippery slope for the parent(s)/guardian(s) since purchasing a VR headset (or any web enabled device) is not age restricted... Yet. For those of us born in the 80s and 90s, you couldn't access the internet unless you had a lot of dosh for a home PC and a lot of dosh for the internet at the time. Internet access was a whole song and dance! Now, with as little as 80usd, you can go to your local bigbox store and pick up a cheap new or used Android and have unfettered access to the internet. Perhaps, instead of immediately financially penalising the parental figures, instead age-gate internet enabled devices? Though, I'd imagine that would come with its fair share of caveats too.

Number One reason why I stay well away from VRC. I've expressed this concern time and time again to my partners who play it.

I have no idea if that was honesty or fear of the consequences back then, but I remember being way too scared to ever lie about my age when registering to websites and games back when I was a minor.
Only moment I really felt sad about it though was when games from Electronic Arts prevented you to play online if you were below 16 :P

I'm so tired of running into kids wearing inappropriate avatars, or grown adults literally exposing children to these things without a care and arguing against it, saying the kids don't belong there. For many kids and adults alike, VRChat is a stress free way to have a social experience and find like minded friends.

Nope, hard disagree! VRChat is too tainted to be appropriate for minors anymore! Adults make up a majority of the user base because a lot of them use VR, which kids usually don't. My way, it should be 18+ period, no exceptions! They can go play Rec Room and make friends there for all I care!

Absolutely, minors have always lied about their age but if they were honest they would have to create a new account at this point.
This will only work imo if they also introduce proper ID checks. I'm sorry, it's too easy to lie about your age on the internet, and at this point we need the ID system like that. Sure, there are ways to get around it, but it's on average much safer to have proper ID checks as part of your age gate stuff. I say this as someone who has been Ided before getting NSFW commissions/ going into some nsfw servers fyi. ID is a good way to VERIFY if someone is actually saying the truth on their age.

People are thinking that this is just like any birthdate you enter on any website. They didn't know this was coming. They weren't smart enough to have lied when it would have mattered, maybe some were. However now, they have a huge friends list, hundreds of hours in the game, and have to create a whole new account. Which brings with it, trust issues. Not just the trust between friends when they see you show up with a totally different account (which would already be setting off some red flags), but now your trust rank is reset. Most kids in that situation, are probably just going to make 2 accounts, but good luck starting over.

Read the update logs I got 2 months till I'm 18 so I'm hoping vr chat pulls a vr chat and takes a while but imo they r gonna release the update but not change their TOS so u may tag it as NSFW but they are still going to ban you what I'm saying is they are using an update to Crack down on NSFW stuff but I also see this as a good thing

Honestly, i made a new account recently and put my age as real age. Yeah i noticed, im not worried since i got a year and a few months when i turn 18. And i don't want to be in uncomfortable adult situations.
I'm super new to VRC and didn't realize how big of a problem it was in drinking worlds (well aware of how big it is everywhere else haha) and said I was "3 in rat years" to the bouncer and got instakicked lmao. Lesson learned, I suppose.

It's a nice feature, even though I have to say that I know a few very adult thinking minors. Minors that, due to thinking and acting rather grown up, have had problems to find people of similar age for friends. And that had problems to find like-minded people because they were avoiding and blocking them once they heard of the age, even when only SFW stuff was done and talked about anyway. In these cases the grown ups that blocked minors for being minors were not worth to be befriended in my opinion (legal stuff as reason left out, since that's out of everyone's control)
And that while I've met several grown ups 40+ that should not touch alcohol, stay away from NSWF and other things because they are mentally not prepared for it. Sadly it's a rather huge bunch, even though it is far less in VRC than in RL.
While I in general support this system I do dislike the people that made some minors lie about their age in the first place. The minors I met would not have joined in drinking, they would have stayed with juice or lemonade. They would have face-palmed if an ERP avatar runs around. Please don't judge people only by physical age. If you had a good connection even though they were minors, just keep it.

At the risk of sounding like an absolute, draconian arse; I feel like if they want to play the spoof-my-age game then make the risk of loosing be as detrimental as possible, send a ping to meta and have them brick the device until they can provide proof the user is of age or from a parental figure whos willing to chaperone the device to get it unbricked

Content gating should take into consideration ages of consent in specific countries across the world. In Europe 15 and 16 are the most frequently valid ages and now people over the age of consent, but under 18 will be unable to see NSFW avatars of their friends or bfs / gfs, whose they can legally meet IRL for NSFW purposes. I don't like how vrc pushes that high age on everyone else. My friend made some NSFW avatar when he was 17. Come on.
Everything else is right. Content gating based on users' preferences is a very good idea and I'm curious, why wasn't it implemented earlier. Now it will definitely make filtering users into night clubs easier.

Hopefully the penalty for lying about age on vrc gets a bit more severe with this as well. Like an ip ban or console/device ban from vrc or such, would help keep the lying down since the only way to get back would be to get a new device which would not be an option for most people lying about said age in the first place. Cause lying about ya age can have major consequences for others and yaself.
This problem is pretty consistent throughout the Internet. There are just boundaries that aren't meant to be crossed.

The problem I have with certain age-gating ideas is that in some cases it's used to ban certain things that either might be necessary (abortion), or aren't harmful (LGBT+ content)
i see this as an absolute win honestly, and if a minor is lying about their age its as simple as reporting and or blocking them (hopefully the reporting system isnt going to be entirely out of wack after this lol)
I unfortunately live in a hot climate without AC, so I can't use VR for more than an hour usually. So I haven't been on VRC in a while...
If you find out someone in an adult-oriented world has lied about their age, there is a function to report them on it right?
Because if so, then it'd be up to us to weed them out as necessary.
Would've been nice to have this feature a while ago. It won't remove it all of course, but it'll remove this kind of scenario and many others from happening a lot more.
I've seen quite a few issues that needed to be resolved in my time on VRChat. Now I got a group of people that are all able to drink or older, so now I don't have the many many headaches of the differing age groups interacting with each other.

I was groomed on SL as a child on more than one occasion. And this was AFTER they instituted age gating on that platform. I'm hoping they do a better job on VRC lol.

This is actually not really that helpful for combatting intentional malpractice by those under the age of 18. Assuming they're competent enough to always lie about their age on websites, even when this is fully rolled out this does not hinder them in the least. It's still quite a good change for adults who just don't want to see that stuff, and for kids who are conscientious enough to avoid that stuff, myself included.
Just- if you are in adult circles, don't use this as an excuse to drop all other safeguards. Stay vigilant, be responsible in public worlds and be sure to exchange identification if you're doing "adult activities".

I don’t like politics but I think it should be said that lying about your age when you’re a minor should have real monetary consequences. (Parents get a severe notice and fine)

That's a nasty double-edge sword to have to dance with but I totally see your POV; principally for the legal ramifications that can come of it for the stranger(s) involved.
On the other hand, it can be a slippery slope for the parent(s)/guardian(s) since purchasing a VR headset (or any web enabled device) is not age restricted... Yet.
For those of us born in the 80s and 90s, you couldn't access the internet unless you had a lot of dosh for a home PC and a lot of dosh for the internet at the time. Internet access was a whole song and dance! Now, with as little as 80usd, you can go to your local bigbox store and pick up a cheap new or used Android and have unfettered access to the internet.
Perhaps, instead of immediately financially penalising the parental figures, instead age-gate internet enabled devices? Though, I'd imagine that would come with its fair share of caveats too.

Finally an actual functional use for the tag system, and even though I wish the games was changed to 18+ ONLY so we don't have to be these little shit's god damn babysitters, this a good enough compromise.
They need to put in an age check service. I know it’s an extra cost to apply for them, but it’s just too dangerous to have kids run around with accounts with false ages.
