      (Written before you did the trivia)
      The bit about the guys crying over Trini Lopez was completely adlibbed. Watch Rita's face. She had no idea what was going on. I had no idea she was playing his sister.
      An Affair to Remember was a decent movie. Now completely spoiled though.
      I love this movie. Though you never mentioned him, Victor Garber (Rita's movie husband) is an absolutely fantastic actor.
      Gaby Hoffman, Rita Wilson and Rosie O'Donnell work together again in Now and Then two years later.

    I'm honestly fine with this film having no "big kiss" because that moment is fulfilled when Sam takes Annie's hand--it's noted by the film that Sam fell in love with his first wife when he "was taking her hand to help her out of a cab". The closeup of the hand hold, the swell of the music, it all conveys an importance to the gesture.

    • @SwiftFoxProductions
      @SwiftFoxProductions Před 2 lety +11

      Exactly. I think coming full circle with that story, implying that "the magic" Sam described has happened again, is much more poetic to me than a kiss would have been. Taking Annie's hand and that reaction shot on Sam, implies to us as an audience that even if they're not all of a sudden getting married right this second, it kinda guarantees that is where their relationship will lead. Sam has internally already decided that Annie's the one. (And the way he can't stop staring at her from that shot onwards just makes my heart flutter! 🥰) I think a flash-forward, actually, might've been a little too heavy handed for me. For this movie, anyway.

    • @Ivy94F
      @Ivy94F Před 2 lety +7

      you know, I usually want a kiss but now that I think about it, I never even noticed there wasn't a final kiss in the film. I didn't feel the absence of one for exactly the reason you described so well. The hand hold basically is the kiss moment.

  • @doctor-aesthetic
    @doctor-aesthetic Před 2 lety +14

    This one is by far my favorite Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks movie. I think the ending is actually exactly perfect. In her mom's story near the beginning, and in Sam's story about when he knew he was in love with his wife, were both centered on the first time they took each other's hand. I think a kiss would have taken the focus away from that moment for them.
    Personally I don't think this movie is made weaker by them being apart for most of it. It's not a movie about two people starting a relationship, and finding their way into commitment like most romcoms. It's a movie about two people on independent journeys, that eventually bring them together in a moment where they are ready to be together. Think about it: if Annie had stuck around instead of just saying "hello" and leaving, she would have been an engaged woman, essentially committing a much greater degree of infidelity, until breaking it off with Walter. Instead, we get her coming to terms with the fact that Walter isn't the right person for her, fessing up with the doubt she's been experiencing, telling him the truth, and gracefully breaking it off with him, leaving her properly unattached, and open to officially getting acquainted with Sam.
    Also, can we just talk about how great Walter is? So many movies set up the current partner as a jerk, or self absorbed, or stupid or something. This movie chose instead to give us an honestly wonderful, kind man, who is simply not right for the lead. I love that for this movie, and I love his brief speech at the end, about wanting to be with someone who really wants him too. Bill Pullman did a great job.

      Love that they don’t meet until the end. The whole time you’re just rooting for them as their lives swerve closer and closer to each other. Payoff is knowing the setup is there for everyone’s idealized happy ever after to unfold in mind.

    • @mltorrefranca
      @mltorrefranca Před 2 lety +4

      And agreed, Walter is pretty great. I like that he wasn’t magically paired up with someone out of the blue to make the breakup cleaner. Annie getting to the top of the Empire State Building had to come with a final cost, and that was being painfully honest with a kind person who she does care about, but just isn’t right for her.
      Plays differently in You’ve Got Mail with Frank. Breakup is cleaner, but she doesn’t have somewhere to go other than her inbox of mysteries and uncertainty.
      I guess two different approaches to a similar ending?

    • @doctor-aesthetic
      @doctor-aesthetic Před 2 lety

I have always loved both actors and them together in 'Sleepless in Seattle" and" You've Got Mail". I happened to see both movies again this summer and now can't get enough of them!..especially" Sleepless". We need movies like this more than ever these days! .When "Sleepless in Seattle" premiered in 1993, I loved it and was given the CD with the beautiful romantic music, in my Christmas stocking!. I was a busy new mom back then.. Now years later , I have 3 grown children and have so enjoyed re-watching these 2 movies. I have watched "Sleepless " over and over on Net-flicks this month and agree with the young lady in the commentary.. I wanted more! (a one year year later) scene showing them as the happy family that we knew they would become! However, ending the movie with that moment of " magic" when their hands touched, and the beautiful "Affair to Remember" music swelling , was perfect!

    Meg Ryan was America's Sweetheart for a reason! I love watching you discover how charming and funny she is, comedic actresses rarely seem to get the props for being extraordinary! Try a couple of my faves, French Kiss with Kevin Kline, and I.Q with Tim Robbins. She is so unselfconscious in those films, her physical naturalism is remarkable in front of a camera!

    Because of this movie "An Affair to Remember" became a huge rental at Video stores. It's actually a remake. the director Leo McCarey remade his own movie 1939's "Love Affair", that starred Charles Boyer and Irene Dunne. Warren Beatty and his wife Annette Benning starred in a 1994 version title "Love Affair" which featured Katherine Hepburn in one of her last film roles.

That handhold is more romantic than any kiss two strangers could have shared, and it shows the promise of a long and happy life together. The look on Jonah's face as the elevator doors closed was the final cherry on top of a lovely cake.

    Someone else probably already mentioned this but, the score that plays when Annie is running to the Empire State Building and when Sam & Annie finally meet is, actually, the beautiful theme music from "An Affair To Remember" (the Cary Grant movie Annie loves so much).
    "An Affair To Remember" is not my favorite Cary Grant movie but, it really is used so beautifully in this. And the main theme music (both with and without lyrics) is gorgeous! Listen to Nat King Cole's cover of it, if you ever have a chance.

    Another great reaction. A little trivia for you Shanelle. The houseboat that Sam and Jonah live in is maybe 500 yards from the park that Heath Ledger and Julia Stiles played paintball in 10 Things I Hate About You. There's a joke in the movie about it rains all the time in Seattle and it didn't rain once during the shoot. Seattle was in the midst of a drought that year. They had to fake the rain and were fined for it.

    A kiss r a time jump at the end isn’t needed because it was established by the mom and Tom Hanks that they will know they are meant for each other when they first hold hands AKA the magic. I also think the fact that they don’t meet till the very end differentiates it from your standard romcom and makes it very unique with a big payoff watching everything that happens beforehand. They were destined to be together. This one and When Harry Met Sally are my two favorite romcoms.

    This film is the definition of a sleeper hit (pun intended). Very little promotion but huge word of mouth meant it started small and just continued and snowballed and played for a really long time in theatres because people kept telling others about it and going back for rewatches. Sleeper hits are almost impossible these days because cinema runs are so drastically short, and it's all about the opening weekend, even for huge hits. So if a movie opens badly it dies a quick death and no chance for audiences to hear about it. Sleeper hits were what cinema owners wanted back in the day, because studios take half the box office at the beginning of a run, and the percentage dwindles as the movie plays longer in cinema, so cinemas make more over time. Studios liked that back then as well because they didnt make money post-cinema till VHS/DVD release which could be up to 2 years later. Now studios want to make more money from immediate streaming or digital purchases so movies don't stay as long in cinemas anymore. Also pre-promotion is now ridiculous and basically overshadows the movie it's trying to promote.

    I saw this in initial release in a theater in Baltimore and loved it; it was fun identifying all the locations where they shot in and around Baltimore. Then less than 2 decades later I moved to Seattle; it's now fun to identify all the locations where they shot in and around Seattle. I've actually seen the houseboat on Lake Union from an excursion cruise to the Ballard Locks.
    Great movie. I love rewatching it when it presents on TV.
    That whole "classic romantic songs with full orchestration from the 1950s/60s" thing was a 1990s rom-com affectation; I think it was Nora Ephron that started/epitomized it.
    Comparing the 3 Hanks/Ryan movies, I think I like Sleepless the most. I'm not so into Mail, but I do really like Volcano. I view Joe vs the Volcano as kind of a parable. I think it was a tour de force for Meg Ryan, playing 3 very different female characters. There has to be something allegorical about the 3 women Hanks is most involved with being played by the same actor, much like in "Big Fish" Helena Bonham Carter plays 'every woman' except Edward Bloom's wife who is the love of his life. I'm still mulling over Volcano...

    "Sleepless" kind of (re)set the gold standard for romcoms. It hit all the marks. Pathos - grieving widower who can't let go of the idyllic past.... The Annie character who is willing to settle for Walter (a decent guy by all accounts - but no one would describe him as 'a catch') the ancillary characters all help build this world & flesh out the two protagonists.
    Nora - AND her sister Delia - really did their homework... even if it consisted on being raised since childhood on a steady diet pf Hollywood movies. In that respect, she reminds me of J.J. Abrams... a gifted artist who can consume & digest a century of pop culture and churn out something fresh ....but intimately familiar.
    If you want to see another side of Meg, check out 'Addicted to Love' with Matthew Broderick. It's a dark, twisted comedy. And, while on the surface Meg still seems to be 'America's Sweetheart' she gets to show her dark, malevolent side. It's a cynical delight.
