Can we all take a moment to appreciate these brilliant costumes? So much subtext and subtlety. Modern, with all the nods to tradition. And just plain gorgeous. They move beautifully. So flattering to the dancers. Bravo

@@pedinurse1 I agree, these costumes are awful. Not everything needs to look modern. They're distracting, and the bodice on the Wilis costumes looks like something from a 2010's Discount Dance catalog. These dancers deserve better.

Hideous costumes and a weird setting: I can't tell if it's supposed to be indoors or outdoors. It looks like a mishmash of La Sylphide sets: James' house meets the natural world. If someone didn't KNOW the story, they'd be confused by all of this (and never assume that "everyone knows Giselle" because there are dozens of newbies at every performance). Personally, I'm tired of all this modernization with classic operas and ballets these days. Just read a review where Samson And Delilah took place in a giant casino with a huge clown head gazing on the action. Now we have Giselle wearing 1950's Barbie clothes and dancing in what looks like the patio of a Turkish harem. Will sanity ever prevail???

I loved the beautiful acting between Albrecht and Giselle in this production. Often Giselle is reduced to unrealistic mime but the romance on Act 1 was so charming and beautiful. Truly they gave the most remarkable characteristisations I've seen in Act 1. I'll be keeping an eye out for the lead male. Surely he's one to watch!
Best wishes to the Company. Thank you!

The design of this production is STUNNING. Lighting is the dead last thing I ever understand or notice, and it immediately caught my eye. It's also the first time I've seen Kaas and I am fascinated with his sort of..."untraditional grace" for male ballet dancers which shatters the stereotype that the men parade the women around until they do the "jumpy parts," and that men's roles are more stoic. I watched him dance just as much as Giselle, a first for me in this ballet, and maybe...any?

    • @eg5660
      @eg5660 Před 2 lety +4

Agreed! A nuanced performance of Albrecht is absolutely the key. Even the most incredible Giselles are limited by their partner. The first act is grounded in a familiar earthly setting whereas act II takes place on an ethereal, almost spiritual plane, where Albrecht is the only living force amongst ghosts (not counting Hilarion’s brief appearance as he dies soon after!) so the production relies on him to tie the two acts together and bring out that humanity in Giselle that we saw in the first half. Otherwise how can we be expected to care and root for Giselle to save him from the Wilis? So much of the magic of this ballet is lost when you don’t see the characterisation imo!
Edit to add: I think Andreas Kaas was only around 23 when this was performed? Incredible stage presence, particularly for one so young. Also enjoyed Kizzy Matiakis’ acting for Myrtha, sad to hear she has recently retired but wish her well :)

The acting was simply wonderful and the chemistry between the leads was captivating and natural. My favorite acting moment was when Giselle leaves the stage toward the end of the night as Albrecht’s strength wanes and instead of following her into the wings, he is blocked by a willis. The look of despair on his face is heart-wrenching as he watches Giselle disappear, turning away only to meet Myrtha’s gaze as she once again avows that he is to dance until he dies. And the best moment is at 1:43:05 as he watches what Myrtha is, in effect, saying and nods his head in resignation at Myrtha’s edict. It’s superb acting, some of the best I’ve ever seen and utterly believable.
Also, the lighting and set design was fantastic and despite a consensus on the costumes, I absolutely loved them. I thought Giselle’s Act I dress was beautiful and it made her look both youthful (in it’s fresh interpretation) and delicate. I don’t believe that being a peasant, the point of which is to highlight the the fact that these two individuals are clearly not supposed to or meant to be together, needs to permeate everything down to the costumes. Being a peasant as opposed to just a commoner does not, imho, change the story and therefore the costumes should be able to have some flexibility in their design. I also particular liked Albrecht’s costume and thought the black/gunmetal colors with the gold embroidery or accents was very regal. The Willis also looked elegant and the unconventional design of their costumes gave them a edginess which I think reflects the harsh reality of their role (the whole ‘dance to your death angle? 😉). But, really I think all the costumes breathed a sense of freshness into this wonderful classic. I'd love to see this production some day! Bravo!

Ida Praetorius is amazing! I really like this version of Giselle, it’s seems really fresh to me and the characters exude youthful impetuosity in Act I. Everything movement and expression feels “natural”, it’s the only word I can think to use, like they really are the characters doing this for the first time and not professional dancers who’ve been rehearsing this for months and months. I also love Ida’s facial expressions, they are spot on with her dancing, you can see what her character is thinking.

1.42.57 is awesome!! There are so many small details in this production that add to the drama! (Usually Albrecht follows Giselle when she leaps off the stage. Here one of the willis girls steps in his way, which makes a lot of sense)
I also love the staging, especially the light, and the orchestra is also doing a wonderful job.
I cannot understand why people don’t like this production. Tastes are different, but what do they expect? 19th Century costumes over and over again, and Bolshoi- like huge stage and corps? Leonid Sarafanov, presently one of the best male dancers in the world, left the Marinskij theatre some years ago. This theatre is relying on traditional costumes (copies of the original ones) and museum- like performances from 150 years ago. Sarafanov said in an interview : „They are mistaking cliches for tradition.“ And he is so right!
Opera composer Richard Wagner, one of the most innovative composers of the 19th century, also said the famous quote: „Kids, create something new !“
Don‘t get me wrong. I love Mariinski theatre, and I‘m most grateful to them for conserving these precious old Tchaikovsky-time ballets. But it’s good that there are so many other companies that try out new things!!

I did not expect to be so moved by this performance, but here I am with tears on my cheeks. The dancing by all is lovely. While Giselle is ultimately a tale of love, forgiveness and redemption, the dancing -- and the acting -- of Ms. Praetorius and Mr. Kaas bring alive not only the uplift of Act II but the depth of Act I's inexorable tragedy. And incidentally, though I know the story of Giselle perfectly well, the performance of Ms. Matiakis as Myrtha drew me brilliantly into a cloud of uncertainty: might it be that just this one time Albrecht really was going to be doomed? To create such an implacable spirit -- wonderful!
Some commenters wish the stage were more commodious, but to me it seemed just right. The management of the artistic forces is so deft that in these hands and this place Giselle becomes almost a chamber work, with that form's directness, intimacy, immediacy. and absence of ostentation. But never hushed. Just think of it: no-one taking giant steps to travel over the vast acreage of a "grand" stage. Yet it never felt to me that anyone -- including the lovely corps de ballet -- was pinched. The orchestra is fine, meshing with and inspiring the dancing and the story. They carried me along with them. Many thanks to Mr. Bond and the musicians.
If you're thinking of watching this production, do! You've nothing to lose, and -- just perhaps -- a good, soul-cleansing cry to gain.

This is very interesting production of Giselle. I liked very much the acting in the first act: Giselle is so natural, young, soft and the mad scene is so heartbreaking! Amazing jump gives a special sad feeling. At the end, her death is a big tragedy for her mom - they only remain on the scene. This was very heartfelt. He is also very good - the young talented dancer with a great future. I liked also the peasant pas de deux especially the first male variation which is virtuously done.
A few words about the production. For me, this is fine even though I disagree that all colors are used pink, green, blue, yellow for a corp and the main characters are in dark colors. He is in the black costume in the second act which is not good as the scene is dark as well.
Honestly, I enjoyed very much and thank you very much for showing this beatiful piece of art!

Lovely production. Yes it is not a patch on Russian ones - nothing ever is. But it keeps the flame alive for those who cannot reach this pinnacle as dancers, or attend a top-notch performance as spectators. The English Youth Ballet has been recruiting dancers aged 8 to 18 for a production of Giselle. They have an interesting system where there is a core of professional dancers and then they put out a call in selected cities all over the country for young dancers to join the corps de ballet for a short season performing a classic work, maybe only two or three performances but it is wonderful training for the children. I am going to the Nottingham one soon - I am not expecting miracles, but it is great to know that the classics are being done by others besides the "creme de la creme". I am not a huge fan of ballet, but Giselle is a very moving story and it was created FOR ballet in a most interesting way.

A lovely Giselle as a full company! The dancers are an exact technique beautifully trained and rehearsed with a fine orchestra to match. Now, if the sets and lighting with a larger stage of a generous expense that this this great company deserves,, what a more stunning effect of the ethereal 2nd act. Those costumes of the soft toile is very very nice of the other side of Wili world, too. 💝🌹

The Willies are beautiful, only it offends my feeling of fair play that Hilarion is killed, as far as I know he did not

I watched this because I so enjoyed the Romeo & Juliet that you posted that this wonderful company did. I would love to see this lead couple in Coppelia, Cinderella or A Folk Tale. I very much enjoyed this production: beautiful acting, sets, dancing, .. especially good costumes. This didn't have quite the Romantic Ballet gravitas I'm used to, but this more youthful approach made the dance to the death finale more dramatic. I liked the changed choreography bits. The chorus did a nice job. Liked the Myrthe.

Nikolai Hubbe was a principal when Balanchine was head of New York City Ballet. Now he leads the Royal Danish Ballet. He reminds me in his stance of Peter Martins - no suprise, Balanchine often drew from the Danish company and Balanchine chose them both!
