  • This excerpt shows the delegates signing the Declaration of Independence on July 4; an event that is historically inaccurate. The first signatures did not go on to the final document until August 2 and the document was signed over a period of time as delegates were able to do so. I use this excerpt to talk about what we learn from film and cultural misunderstandings.

It is a shame they missed the fact that they used many parts of the Dutch “Plakkaat van Verlatinghe” of 1581 in which the Dutch declared themselves independant from the Spanish King Fillips II. That declaration is considered to be a groundbreaking document for the history of self-determination and basic human rigths. It is funny how that important part is just left out when mentioning The Declaration of Independence ….. not nice or fair, but certainly historically incorrect not mentioning it

travesty. the full clip has been edited and otherwise removed. The importance of this moment is how James Wilson came to be the deciding factor. I do not understand why it has been removed from youtube but it makes this clip meaningless.

Except this doesn't show the delegates signing on July 4- it shows the President of Congress, John Hancock, signing on July 3- still historically inaccurate, of course.

Happy White people Independence Day, the slaves weren’t free. But I’m sure they enjoyed fireworks.

With the Declaration, they tried to free the slaves but the Democrats were not having any of that and was one of the unfortunate compromises. By the way, happy belated Juneteenth, made possible by white Republicans.

@@brycejensen5020 Democrats. Republicans. These concepts didn't exist yet. It was the North and the South. And the South didn't want to free their slaves and cripple their economy by banning slavery. I'm not defending this viewpoint, but I realize that we would not be a country if the North didn't relent on this matter. This was the only way to get them to sign the Declaration.

@@kingcamelot1395 Yes, I understand the timestamp. I also realize that the south at that time had the same ideology as the Democrats that opposed the emancipation of our colored brothers and sisters almost 100 years later. As well as the Democrats that founded a Klan to prevent colored people from entering politics and other hellish tasks a while later. I do think that the point is important to make that many of our founders, imperfect in their own rights viewed slavery as an abomination and needed to be eradicated.
