what i love about these all stars back in the days is that each player wore their own jersey not the uniform for the event. sure it may be difficult to tell whos on what team but it sure adds so much more vibrance and character into the game.

Watched this live as a kid was on the edge of my seat. Much better effort than today's stars. The all star game didn't used to just be about having fun it was about seeing the best players in the world compete and actually trying to beat each other.
The players back then use the allstar game as a chance to team up with other stars, nowadays they are teaming up in real time.
I didn't think that seeing 2001 ASG was so wow. Blessed to witness it. I remember asking my cousin to record this game for me to watch afterwards
Man, as a kid I used to stay up all night watching the all star games in the late 90's to early 2000's because of different time zone and it was so much fun. This sport that I love, Why did it come to this?

The 1987/1993 ASG’s that went to overtime were still a bit better games IMO
2001 felt more like the West collapsing in the 4th quarter than an East comeback
this was my first time whatching all star was amazing they took very serious , now they was worried for injuries and staff so not play even 50% , I lovet too that they wore the uniforms of their teams, they must to bring that againg

I was 19 years old then. It was something beautiful. It was the best All-Star and it only gets worse from there. Maybe someday real competition will return. I only watch the dunk contest and three-pointers. I don't even include the main match.
The highlight of the modern day ASG for me would be Steph and Dame both on fire and going head to head just bombing back to back 3s one after the other 😂
best part about that was the 3 pt contest, when you see the best 3pt shooters of the league battle for the title and then steph comes after that and destroyes every round played in the 3pt contest, just casual for him
we wanted the all star game simply because all of the best player will play against each others and they will show their best skill in offense and defense..current all start game is just like a break moment from reguler season for the players..
Its more like an offensive showcase than exhibition now a days.

Pre-2010 NBA was a little too predictable for my liking at least in the post-MJ era
Lakers and Spurs made all but one NBA Finals in a 12 year stretch and we had next to no Western variety

The game is completely played different then back in the days. The players were better defenders in 90s 2000s, because the idea of winning games were based on good defence. Today games' concepts are simply to outscore your opponent, I believe their practice (if they do any) is just about shooting from everywhere, farest possible. That why they are better shooters today, because they don't lift weight anymore, except the basketball. And even worse then today's audience is preferring this type of game, where every team has its own (one) defensive player in their roster, instead of having a defensive strategy. Technically all NBA season games are like we are watching practice game between two teams. The audience is served, but only a part of it.

The key is defense in general, nowadays they can't defend and they don't call travelling, so it's a little bit boring to see.
Maybe they should go back to wearing their team’s jerseys. It could give a placebo effect for players to want to play more competitively

It's not the 3s that ruined the game, but the mindset... you cannot swim where there no water... the overall thinking is "we gonna have chill" now... we as fans and media sponsors should force some lazy a$$es to give us what we want - a show.

Every year it gets worse. Players don't even want to move. The best would be the game between the G-League All-Stars and the NBA All-Stars. This would bring some competitiveness for sure.

It was very competitive back then but today's players are much proficient in shooting the ball the zone doesn't work that leads to a man to man defense. We all know how the NBA has nerfed defense that why we se some casual 60 to 70 points from different players nowadays.
I think it is a cumulation of a lot of things that lead to this. I mean the simple fact that 3pts are so important now, it means the floor is so much more open, because you pull the defenders further away. just an example and there are many more, like the defense rules you mentioned.

No you not understanding the argument being made. People want to see the fundamental skills of the game and the competitiveness which made the game entertaining and desirable globally not just athletes shooting half court 3s 100 times and bare minimum defense. Show all the skills of the game is what Kobe R.I.P. and Jordan and others are saying. @chrisuncleamad
@chrisuncleahmad Yes !!!! As the ratings and global outreach was way more desirable and effective than today even with modern technology and social media platforms. Also the 3 point lune was very well factored into the game during the 80s 90s and early 2000s but unlike today it was used at a better shooting percentage and skill ratio. Teams were just jacking up 3s like its the only shot they cant take going 20- 65. So yes two of the best NBA players of all time is saying this not just me. If you like todays game than thats fine but statistically the numbers globally says the following of the sport its declining. Whether you agree or not NBA exclusive understands exactly whats going on and why they now trying to get some balance back to the game especially the allstar weekend and game.
