    I used to think this way, and genuinely thought that women pundits were getting it wrong more than men. But then I realised it was just me: I was holding them to a much higher standard and noticing their shortcomings way more often because they stood out to me in the broadcast as unfamiliar and different to what I grew up with. I think they cop more criticism because they’re different and people notice them more. Meaning that to make it they need to be close to perfect, while their male colleagues only need to be slightly above average.

    The idea of "women aren't qualified to talk about men's [sport]" just reminded me about one of the top NFL analysts/pundits here in the US, Mina Kimes. I've seen so many people just flat-out spew hatred toward her and insults at her intelligence and ability JUST because she's a woman. And one of the favorite things on Twitter has been watching her just ratio the HELL out of some of these guys with logic and analysis that they can't respond to because they don't have the level of football knowledge she does. And then her co-workers, most of which are former NFL players, sit there and laugh their asses off because they know she's just as good, if not better, than most of the people out there talking about their sport.

      As a black man, I've become aware of how tokenism only aggravates more racism. I once earned my way into an all-white football team and added so much value that they couldn't risk losing me. When I get a job, I want it on merit not because some white saviours pitied me. Skin colour, sex, age is never an issue when you provide value. Joey Barton doesn't want female pundits because they haven't played the male sport so can't have an opinion. That would apply to men as well who are on this club channels on CZcams giving their opinions but he singled out a woman because he's Andrew Bait (Tate) 2.0

Despite the fact others around clearly do the same and use worse language. The guys don't get called out. There is a sad, subconscious sexism undertone at all levels of football. But honestly Barton's wrong about this as women definitely have earned their place in football and its important for all the daughters, and sons for that matter, out there to know that they may have a place in any space as long as they work hard for it. Amazing video!

  • @michaelduck5208
    @michaelduck5208 Před 4 měsíci +2

    Barton's right. And this isn't just prevalent in football, but all sports; there's an overwhelmingly unnecessary female presence in sports analytics, hosting and commentary positions to appease the social pressure of quota filling.
    Are ALL of them undeservingly in the position they're in? No. But a lot are.
    However I do feel a female can help balance out a talk show/panel scenario. They're often the voice of reason and the men usually settle down and check their ego IF she's a dominant presence. She has to be right person though; an underqualified female should never take the place of a qualified man and vise versa, which is Barton's entire point

    A lot of the arguments made by Barton kind of remind me of the hype around really good pro-footballers when they become managers, right before they flop. Lampard, Gerrard & Rooney for recent examples. There just seems to be this idea that the best knowledge is at the top level but while they can have good insights, a lot of people have the mind but not the athletic talent to reach the top level.
    Alongside this it's all new and a lot of people just hate change. Doesn't matter if it's better that it used to be, safer than it once was or allows the community to grow, some people will just assume it is for the worse.
    Over time the complainers will fade away and the next generation will come through having never really known life beforehand and to them it will be normal.

    @thestooshie Před 5 měsíci

    Thanks so much for posting this video, Vizeh. I’m another fan of the channel who isn’t “one of the lads.”
    I think there are so many layers to this. I’ve seen people on Barton’s side defend his comments by saying “women can have their game… just leave ours alone.”
    This however ignores the fact that these same guys will shit on women’s football at every opportunity. This is something I don’t totally understand - the existence of the women’s game doesn’t take away from the men’s just as the Serena Williams’ success doesn’t undermine Roger Federer’s.
    The thing is - I agree that the average quality at the top of the women’s game is below the average at the top of the men’s game. But when you ask these guys to explore what that might be, all they can say is “just shit,
    innit?”
    The women’s game is a growing one - one that is arguably playing catch-up after too long being maligned, ignored or literally banned. If you want to just
    look at the football side of it - you can point to the comparative lack of investment in the game. But looking wider… I mean, girls as a whole aren’t usually encouraged to even enjoy watching football growing up … never mind playing, or pursuing it as a career. Girls that might have a natural talent for it may never be encouraged to kick a ball. That’s probably changing a bit, but it will be a while until we see young girls inspired by the success of the Lionesses come through the ranks and into the game. And men like Joey Barton will be there at every step of the way to make them feel unwelcome and less than, and undermine the women’s game at every turn.
    I was talking to a guy in the comments of a video where a guy was going on about how the stadiums at women’s games are only full because of the tickets being significantly cheaper than for men’s games. The same bloke was saying that his daughter plays and that her team were offered free or discounted tickets to watch England women. I mean, apart from the fact that having affordable tickets is a good strategy for anything or anyone looking to build a fanbase (up and coming musicians wouldn’t get far charging the same for gig tickets as as Beyoncé) and the fact that it is actually great that young fans getting the chance to see football for free is actually a really nice thing (!), I cannot believe that a grown man whose *own daughter* actually plays football was talking time out of his day to shit all over women’s football in a TikTok comments section.
    A TikTok comments section which was exacting the exact scrutiny that you talk about Vizeh, on a bad mistake made by Mary Earps in goal was like nothing they’d seen in the men’s game and how this was a reflection on the women’s game as a whole. You’d know even just from watching highlights of the men’s game that this isn’t true.
    I was a young Heart of Midlothian fan who enjoyed going
    to games with my dad, uncle and cousins back in the day. I lost touch with football as a grew older and was made to feel like there was no place for me in it. In my thirties now and pleased to say i’ve fallen back in love with the game (including the men’s game) via the welcoming environment provided by the WSL and the existence of things like LGBT+ supporters clubs showing that I do have a right to be there.

    One thing I will say, is that I do feel that men are expected to allow women access to male dominated areas and activities in a way that isn't reciprocated the other way around. Not necessarily talking about football here, but a few things whether it be sports, industries or careers for example. One memory that stands out was when I was in Cubs (traditionally for 9-11 year old boys or around there I believe) in the late 90's and early 2000's. One week, two girls joined us and I remember at the time we were all outraged at this. Eventually we got used to them, but the common feeling was why don't they do Brownies/Guides etc and ideally leave us to be boys? Different times.

    • @symptomofsouls
      @symptomofsouls Před 5 měsíci +2

      My main issue is when women go into male spaces, rather than joining the space and becoming part of it, they attempt to take control of everything and change how everything works to fit their sensibilities. This is why female coaches simply don't work in the male game, the male players often end up being way more competitive than the manager and it leads to problems. Same thing you see with male managers in the womens' game, they are ultra competitive and their players are not, if they get pushed too hard they complain, and instead of the player getting criticized for being lazy and unmotivated, the manager gets sacked.

    I do agree with some of what he said. I believe in the last 5 years some of them are there to "tick boxes" but the main issue is the majority just don't enjoy listening to them. They try and compare it to their game (which isn't anywhere near the same) but I think that's just they types they've got like Eniola Aluka is just awful in every way, and even Alex Scott who's pretty unbearable. Presenters like Kate Abdo and Lauren woods are fantastic and they always feel like they fit in more and don't have this me vs you mentality. In summary I think the presenter role is neural but when it comes to the pundits it should be the most relevant and that goes both ways a male footballer can not speak as well on a female game and vice versa
