Ryan Tubridy lists '7 untruths' about pay scandal in explosive Oireachtas opening statement

- RTÉ have already fired back at the former Late Late Show host.
Ryan Tubridy has released an explosive opening statement ahead of his meetings with the Oireachtas today. In it, he takes aim at RTÉ management, citing seven "untruths" that have been circulating.
The presenter will first face the Public Accounts Committee this morning, Tuesday July 11, with his agent Noel Kelly.
Before the meeting has even taken place, both Tubridy and RTÉ have issued statements taking aim at each other.
Tubridy's statement about RTÉ's "untruths" reads as follows:
“The first untruth is : The claim that I did not take a pay cut from RTÉ in 2020.
“This is not true. I took a 20% pay cut from RTÉ in my 2020-2025 contract. That’s it. I took a 20% pay cut from RTÉ. I am obliged to do 205 Radio shows and 38 live 2-hour Late Late Shows under this contract.
“I am an independent contractor. I get no pension or entitlements from RTÉ. Under the terms of my contract I am allowed to do additional work outside of RTÉ. I stress that there is nothing morally, ethically or legally wrong with me or any independent contractor doing additional work for another client outside of RTÉ.
“But to be clear- I took a pay cut from RTÉ of 20% in 2020 for each of the five years of my contract, at a cost of €525,000 to me over the length of that contract.
“The second untruth is: The suggestion that my decision to retire from the Late Late Show was prompted by this whole debacle?
“This is not true. I was not aware of any of this debacle when I decided to retire from the Late Late Show
“I made my initial decision to leave The Late Late Show almost a year ago. Around this time, I mentioned it to those closest to me, my family and my agent. They were surprised, very surprised to say the least.
“I explained to them that, among other things, I had left a lot on the studio floor after Covid. I was burnt out and exhausted - like so many people in the country. I turned it over in my mind over a few months, but by the time I got to January, I was absolutely certain of my decision. I was convinced that it was time to go.
“There is ZERO connection between my departure and this very raw situation of recent weeks.
I informed management on March 13th of this year. I first became aware of the Grant Thornton review in May - some two months later. Even then, I had no inkling of the bombshell which was to come when RTÉ released their statement on June 22nd.
“The third untruth is: That I was covertly or secretly ‘overpaid’ by RTÉ. This is not true. I was not overpaid by RTÉ at any point. I fully accept I am very well-paid but I was paid fully in accordance with my contract, which my agent negotiated openly, honestly and in good faith. There are no over-payments.
“There are RTÉ’s under-declarations - which we challenged them on back in 2020- and there are RTÉ’s over-declarations of what they actually paid me in 2020 and 2021. This has caused justifiable anger among my colleagues. I understand their anger. The upshot of RTÉ’s inaccurate declarations is an impression that I have been less than honest. This is not the case.
“The fourth untruth is: That I was aware that RTÉ were trying to conceal payments to me This is not true. I was not aware that RTÉ were concealing payments to me. RTÉ acknowledge this in their statement of 27th June 2023 when they stated that Grant Thornton had made no findings against me.
“The fifth untruth: That there was a secret agreement with Renault that I tried to conceal.
“The sixth untruth: That RTÉ’s underwriting of Renault’s payment obligations was a secret.
“This is not true. RTÉ’s underwriting of Renault’s payment obligations was NOT a secret. As the documents we have prepared for you today show, and as my agent will explain in more detail,
“RTÉ committed in February 2020 to provide this guarantee in the early stages of contract negotiations around my 2020-2025 contract. This is unequivocally confirmed in an email dated 20 February 2020 from Breda O’Keeffe to my agent. It was copied to other members of the executive board, the DG and RTÉ’s solicitors’ office. Everyone in RTE who needed to know knew. (You’ll find this on page 10 of the booklet of documents provided to you this morning). - Zábava

Ryan puts himself forward as a victim of this RTE scandal - His agent sits there like butter wouldn't melt in his mouth - The funniest part is Ryan says this whole fiasco is all smoke and mirrors for there's no clarity - Everyone is confused on what is going on at RTE - So he begins with his own 7 untruths which quite frankly was pretty much more smoke and mirrors - I have to hand it to him for he is an excellent communicator and part of me wanted to present him with an Oscar straight off the bat - Nonetheless it does feel like we are still very much still down the rabbit hole - The Ryan Show is a pantomime sideshow - The bottom line is RTE have lost the trust of the public.

I moved to Ireland in 2016 , and have been really surprised at how corrupt all the institutions seem to be and it's not hidden. Story's like this all over the Media . but people don't really seem to care . People Re-elect proven corrupt TD's and ignore the head of the Garda husband misusing a police credit card , the Olympic head escaping out of a hotel window and various public figures lying and being could out with seemingly no Consequences. How can he possibly go back on the air at RTE?? All of his work colleagues on his show (many on reportedly small money) took pay cuts during COVID. He preached about everyone doing his bit while at the same time he's getting paid in this underhanded way. I'd expect that many of his work colleagues must be livid over this. It would be hard for them to work with him again.
Couldn't agree with you more. Ryan has extremely high morals that most of us morals cant live up to. He has spent the entire Covod pandemic preaching to be kind, resourceful, empathetic, aware and useful. I am a front line worker and was never and will neber be recognised. It hurts that an overpaid journalists views are accepted and rewarded more than the honest working person. I miss Ireland.

I watched all of the broadcast today. Noel Kelly came across as a very shady character. I don't believe for a second that Ryan didn't know what was going on as regards negotiating his contract or the fact that he didn't know this tsunami was coming until late June! But, on the whole, I believe him to be a decent enough guy and that at the moment there is a witch hunt going on through all sources of media. I believe the real villains in this is Noel Kelly and rte. I feel sorry for Ryan's daughters and his family. My license was due to be paid at the end of June, I haven't paid it and don't think I will!

Missing the point really, the question that has to be asked is, does any of the staff in RTE want this guy back? If Mr Tubridy returns to RTE I imagine the opinion of his much less paid staff colleagues will be in the gutter and the reception he will receive will be frosty to say the least. This guy is now toxic and if RTE want to repair their reputation and respect their staff Mr Tubridy needs to go. Work in the private sector and see what value they put on him, I don't think its going to be €400000+ per year.

You cannot be an independent contractor only working primarily for one employer. You become an employee. The revenue have questions to answer about how rte employee's are treated

If you turn up at a specific time and work in an office using a company's computer your an employee. Is being a radio presenter really a contractor. Do you provide your own transmitter or own your own studio? I think the claim to being a "contractor" persay is dubious at best. Is he vat registered, does he pay his own insurance like public liability insurance. How come other people at rte are employees. Tubridy may be a contractor. This is tenuous. If you ask the ordinary punters on the street who does Ryan tubridy work for everyone of them will say rte. They won't say self employed. This is enough for me to say that he's not actually a contractor he's an employee. This is obviously a ruse to get him out of paying paye and into company tax and all the loopholes that go with it.

Ryan Tubridy is saying he’s going to pay back money for work not done to an organisation he didn’t know was paying him that he billed for in an unorthodox way via a UK company he had never heard of through an invoice with no name and a wrong description sent via his agent’s second firm.”
When combined with the knowledge that Tubridy never corrected or questioned his publicly stated salary I think it would take incredible naivety to believe he wasn’t knowingly attempting to hide his salary from the public and from other employees. He had to be seen to take the paycut for public perception and colleague solidarity but also wanted to retain his earnings and this was the solution.
He should take responsibility for this and resign. Unfortunately it seems we’re passed that stage and he’ll have to be pushed by RTE which will no doubt lead to claims of victimhood and cancel culture.
