A LITTLE ABOUT ME: I'm Dean Wolfe, a mostly self-taught Canadian guitarist/composer/multi-instrumentalist/singer/producer/performer. I started out as a full time musician on the road at age 17 for two years, but went part-time ever since while holding day careers including as a chef and in spiritual health care while raising a family.
I've recorded hundreds of my own songs- many being used in media and award winning documentaries etc. I've been in several bands including a prog/jazz fusion act nFuze, performing in International Jazz festivals and jazz clubs. I abandoned the prog genre more or less back in the 1990s but have returned to it now with vigour a full 30 years later- so much prog I've ignored and quite frankly didn't have any idea about. My own prog band was rejected by record labels as "too progressive' in the late 80s, so i detoured into grunge, pop and alternative instead (then folk and acoustic fingerstyle guitar and ambient electric as well).

Soen's newest album Imperial is my favorite album of 2021 (next to Manchester Orchestra's The Million Masks of God). Imperial is damn good the whole way through, and has moved Soen up into my favorite band list.
On a side note, Manchester Orchestra is not prog, but the song "Angel of Death" from the Million Masks of God album I would call prog territory at 5:48 length and varying sections. React that one someday if you get a chance :)

@@nikovandh How do you feel about the mixing, though? Specifically the bass. They really minimized the low end on Imperial, and it bugs the hell outta me. That, however, is my ONLY complaint.

@@jennifer9047 Lack of bass on Imperial bugged me initially, but eventually I came around on it; the album is intended to focus on its exceptional guitar work, and Joel's voice being better than ever, with the best Soen lyrics to top it all off.
Go and check out the bassline ... absolutely incredible, so creative and just driving.
One of my favorite Soen songs, at least, top two from Imperial. I recommend a reaction to the Lykaia album before Imperial, but really all Soen's albums are solid.
