  • Just a quick and very unscientific look at some of the distinctions between two very comparable synthesizers. The Prophet-6 and the OB-6 may be remarkably similar, but there is still a lot that differentiates the two and your friend MR TUNA is here to stumble through them a bit on your behalf, so check ittttt:

Every time I think I've finally made a decision on the OB6, my sensibility tells me to go with the P6. I own a Sub37, so this will be the Poly purchase to accompany it. Melena Santorum I’m actually in agreement with you on this, yes! The filter on the P6 does not excite me one bit I have to say and it would be one of the main reasons for leaning more towards that OB6 SEM filter, which like you say, is that distinctive quality filter you want to see on such a pricey piece of equipment. Had both, kept the OB-6. You can hear in this demo when it's doing similar sounds the P6 sounds sharper (more jarring/harsh).
The OB-6 blurs the sound in a very pleasing, musical way that the Prophet just doesn't. This is why I chose OB-6, but they are both great synths! I couldn't justify keeping both and had other synths that could cover the Prophet more easily than anything could match up to the OB-6's tone! Again, on the sounds where they match closely (technically) the Prophet 6 sounds like a modern synth being put next to a vintage classic that it's trying to sound like (The OB-6). Like when you see the Roland software up against a real Jupiter 8... similar deal here with P6 vs OB-6 (that's how good the OB-6 sounds!)
I also find the OB-6 a lot more fun to program, it always sounds great. Prophet 6 could be a bit dry and generic at times.

@@miulalabyrinth9600 sorry this is a year late but for anyone else this might help, I can try to answer in a simple way. The OB6 is only 2 pole filter so it's more difficult to get tighter sounds you'd want for bass or lead, and stabs for instance. Another thing about this is that the OB-6 doesn't have a self-oscillating filter. This means you aren't able to easily program certain sounds that you would on a 4 pole filter like the one on P6. P6 has a triangle wave on both oscillators but OB6 only has a triangle on osc 2. Lastly, you'll get a different bottom end cause of the sub osc Tuna was demonstrating which you can listen for yourself and see which one you like. That being said, the OB-6 does shine with having its multi mode filter and super easy bandpass

@Jim009911 I won't deny the sound is different, both are very good in their own way. But though I'd really love to have a Prophet 6 (more than an OB-6, honestly) because of the idea, the sound, and the look of it, I really believe you can get such good sounds in a VST (Repro 5 for example), or many physical synths, that I can't quite see myself justifying the expense of a Prophet 6 though it is by all means a fantastical instrument and I'd really love to own one. I've yet to see a synth with such an intuitive mod matrix as the Rev2 though, and I don't really get how people can argue that it sounds bad, merely quite different indeed, and that's the beauty of it, it all depends on what you want !

You could download a VST mimicking a classic (like The Legend is a great Moog Model D clone) and checking through the presets. It indeed can get very boring when guys play funk riffs on and on to show off the capabilities if you're trying to understand a synth from a sound design point of view. So if you're coming from that angle, go check a synth like The Legend or Monark, and run through the presets to get an idea.

Truly almost unlimited possibilities if you know how to edit and/or create sounds on an analogue synth. It can be brassy and punch, searing leads with many different types of articulation can be made, you can create very mellow pads either brass or string bass, and you can create incredible low end bass sounds. About the only stuff you don't get are onboard effects, and an arpeggiator/sequencer, but there are more modern synths that are good at that stuff.

Interesting. I could not ever get the OB6 to work in the same personal headspace as my OBXa. Not at all. Maybe its strange then that I prefer the Prophet 6 to the OB6 as an Oberheim lover. I'm lucky to have the OBXa, but I'd definitely want the Prophet given the choice between the 2 DSIs ... not because I have the OBXa already, but simply because I think the Prophet sounds the better of the two. I was really lucky with the OBXa because here in the UK they are less common. I waited years for the right one and I'm lucky enough to have got a mint example with its original manual - it wasn't easy, and as I say, I tried long and hard, but in the end every time I tried an OB6 I ended up saying "where's THAT sound". I'm not convinced that for subtle pads it sas good as everyone says, but for power pads, sync. and those 2 (at least) iconic patches that everyone loads up ... it's the only one that works for the sound in my own head. I've been looking for decades in both hard and software. Props again, and I'll keep following your channel - really great studio you have there - I'm jealous :)))

I have them both too. It is pretty easy to tell differences. With OB6 you can get more aggressive sounding bass and pads. Thats not mean that OB6 is more aggressive. That only mean that resonance from OB6 can be sound more darker and edgy. Prophet 6 smells Prophet 5. It is dark, but not so dark as OB6. Also P6 is more vintage sounding, OB6 overall is more modern sounding. Easy conclusion is. They both has almost same sounding oscillators. But filters are really different. Also you can get nicer solo from P6. Also nicer pads and atmospheres - but not darker like on OB6. Check this movie czcams.com/video/zag0rFOTiCg/video.html - P6 and OB6 sounding almost same with open filters. The differences are when you are going to details and more close cut off filter and adding resonance. On more or less 75% open resonance and 45% open cutoff you really start judge which synth is for you :)
