- Today I show you how I get sharp photos every time, both handheld and from a tripod.
I also have a troubleshooting section later in the video just in case you are looking for a fix to a certain problem you might be having with your photographs.

Getting sharp photos can be tricky and when you first start photography, it is easy to get a blurry photograph, but if you follow along with these steps, I'll show you exactly how to get sharper photographs.
I suppose you could called this a landscape photography vlog ... but I prefer on location landscape photography!

Although with this one, I got up at 3am, drove 2 hours to one location, and it was pouring with rain, then ran out of fuel in my car ... had to wait at the petrol station for it to open, then drove another 2 hours to get out from under the rainclouds!! 😆 In saying that, it was quite rewarding when it all started to come together!! ... and if you look closely, in the last scene, the rain had caught me up and it had started again ... But I do love a challenge!! 😆😆

Totally agree!
I love how you casually throw out knowledge bombs in your videos without drawing any attention to them. In particular the revelation that when you know the rules you know when you can break them. For me, this has always been the motivation for learning the rules. I don't adhere to them much, but knowing the basic rules I can then easily establish the WHY of when my experiments don't work. And so I can do better next time.
Haha! I was thinking when I said it, that I probably should have drawn a bit more attention to that one. 😆
It's always good to go over the basics from time to time to brush up on them. In making this video, I did remember a few things that I have gotten lazy with recently!! 😆😆

Good tips, a few more I can think of are:
- I've found long tripod spikes can help especially on soft ground.
- If you're on very soft ground like wet sand you can use CD's to stop your tripod sinking and causing motion blur.
- Longer focal lengths will amplify heat ripples.
- Check if your vibration reduction/image stabilisation (VR/IS) is on or off. Sometimes this can cause motion blur if left on when on a tripod, but it depends on the camera - some automatically turn off when it detects it's on a tripod, some don't.

Heat ripples are an issue in hotter countries and on those hot summer days, but if you get up early enough, they should pose too much of a problem.
As for turning the IS off, that was one of the first things I spoke about but referred more to DSLRs as in modern lenses and cameras, they seem to have remedied this problem. Spikes and old CDs are great for those rough or sandy terrains and well worth having in your bag.

Mike, another excellent tutorial and tips on sharpening! Another suggestion you may want to consider when using a tripod on windy days is to remove your lens hood. The hood will act as a sail and cause movement in the lens/camera thus potentially adding blur to the image. Thanks for these videos!

@@mikesphotography question, is it necessary to follow the Shutter speed law (as i use crop sensor camera, meaning i have to roughly estimate what my Shutter speed is). And I was mainly using Tv (aperture priority) when I am in trip. Also is it safer to put the ISO on auto or i need to shot an image to see what ISO should I use in case like me trips?

Thanks - not sure but if you mentioned that in DSLR s live view locks the mirror up. Long shutter speeds may need to close of the view finder to eliminate light on exposure.

Well spotted and yes it is. I recently got the 50-400mm from tamron. It's big, but such a useful range to have in one lens.

Sometimes cameras just miss focus despite all of our efforts. Would be helpful to have a vid about how to recognize and remedy those situations. I vaguely recall the topic of back and front focusing (not BBF) lenses and how some cameras enable DIY adjustments. Sony A6600 has AF micro Adjustment menu item but couldn’t find same in Sony A74 menu. Hope that makes sense. Cheers!

You're right there with the focussing systems. I suppose it is a case of just checking the shot after you have taken it, until you are confident about using your specific camera/lens combo.
From what I understand about the AF micro adjustment option, it is for adapted A mount lenses with the LA-EA5 adapter.
I remember owning a sigma 70-200mm and that front focussed a little on my old Canon 7D. That was very annoying ...
It doesn't seem to be as much of a problem any more, although I was photographing kitesurfers then and now with landscapes and headshots, the process is a lot more calculated.

So well and clearly explained. At night it's so much harder, especially as my live view isn't great quality. And when I zoom in on the lv, I lose what I was zooming in on. My alternative is doing the focus during the day, then marking my lens with tippex, then when I'm in the field I just match the two lines on the lens 😉 thank you Mike for such quality content

I make sure I know where the infinity point is for the lenses I have.

I haven't done one, but from what I have found, they are an in-camera process for jpegs.

Hi Mike, Good tips, thank you. For years, I've been a believer in good uv or clear filters to protect the lens surface. Then I tried testing some photos of with and without using the same settings. Without the filter got sharper results every time. So now the filter only comes out if there's sand or water around. Having said all of this, there is always a little lack of peace of mind by not protecting those precious front lens elements. Cheers

Elan Valley looks stunning. Not been up there since 1997 in my mil days. Must get back there soon. Snowdonia this weekend and the weather Gods don't appear to be smiling at us! Good work on the sharpness tips, especially using the tripod. The exposure/light triangle is all about knowing your priorities for the desired outcome and then understanding that it's give and take - you can't always have it all. Well, that's how I see it anyway 😉. Nice video mate. Thursday's are now my official start to the weekend!! 😂

If you are in A mode and have the ISO on auto how does the camera decide on the setting of the speed of the shutter and the ISO?
Good question Paul. I think nowadays most cameras have an ISO range limit, and also an "ISO auto min shutter speed" setting as well. When there is room to spare with your shutter speed (in aperture priority) it will keep the ISO to its lowest. Then when you get to the minimum shutter speed set, it will start to raise ISO. Then once it has reached the maximum ISO set, it will start to drop the shutter speed again.
That's how I understand that it works in the Sony cameras at least ...

Yes, definitely! I love using my drone, Ive crashed it a few times recently but it just keeps going.

In Lightroom when I just want to select section of pic I do brush it over to select aera but once selected I cannot see " RANGE MASK" option anyware.

I use LR Classic with Adobe Sub. One moore. Just discwered that when using radial filter, once appleyed outer boundry lines disapered so I 'm not able to rotate.

Excellent video, except for one point. The old "1/focal length = minimum shutter speed" rule was made in the days of Tr-iX film (about 3 megapixels). I doubt that rule would apply to a picture made with a 30-60 megapixels sensor. Hope to see more of your tutorials!

That is a good point, however, with image stabilisation it does still seem to be the case ... although it does vary from person to person ... for the shaky handed amongst us, it would be faster, but for the steady handed, it would be slower.

Nice video 😄 i hate when i get some blurry or non-sharp photo's, specially when shooting some photo's in a hurry from the car 😅 and if it's windy. It's also easy to get a non-sharp photo for me when i use binoculars when i want to get a photo of a ship on a far distance with my phone hehe 😅 but i do my best to get less shaking photo's when i shoot with the phone in the binoculars 🙂 yeah, that's my "noob photography gear" with a binocular😆

Blurry shots are really annoying aren't they ... I sometimes go out and take a few shots and then realise my settings are all wrong ... normally when I haven't had a coffee and am still half asleep!! 😆😆😆

With IBIS (Sony a7iv) I can handhold at 1/10 of a second at 50 mm. I take more than one picture to be sure at least one is sharp.
I have used it with waterfalls and the tripod left at home or in the car.
IBIS really does help doesn't it.

It was only last year that the penny dropped about the correlation of perceived sharpness and taking images on bright sunny days.
Yesterday, and for the first time in weeks, the sun came out and I got one of my most pin-sharp images this year, of a Moorhen at full pelt defending his bit of water. Had I taken the shot on a dull day, which is normal for Blackpool, it would have looked ok, but nothing to write home about. Adding Mr Sunshine into the mix made all the difference yesterday.
maybe you could do "Sharp photos" with fast moving subjects?

It is amazing how different photos can look just minutes apart when the sun does come out.

Sorry, your advice is only partially correct regarding DSLR to use mirror lockup - it only applies to Nikon. For Canon DSLR it is much better to use live view instead of mirror lockup.
That is a good point Karl. I haven't shot with DSLRs for a while, but when I did shoot with Canon, I found the mirror lockup to be better, once I composed and focussed with the viewfinder ... but it is great to hear the live view on more modern DSLRs is better now.

@@mikesphotography Canon DSLR unlike most of their Nikon counterparts use electronic first shutter curtain when taking photos in live view. Most Nikon DSLR terminate live view first by closing the shutter to then going through a fully shutter cycle while taking the shot.

Come on guys, how about breaking away from the norm and doing something a little bit different once in awhile...??... or is it simply just about the clicks and mastering the algorithm?
I agree to a certain extent that there are a lot of similar videos out there covering similar topics. But that isn't the whole story, is it? Mike's work is definitely Sony orientated - we can forgive him for this 😂- which appeals to the Sony owners (I'm not one, I have Fuji). Also, there is delivery of the content - some of the others maybe boring, not as articulate in the detail or have missed the point completely. The thing is, I believe it is good to have variety and we will all gravitate to what it is we feel comfortable with or entertained by. Henry Ford made a car a few years back... thank god we didn't just stick to that model and that other people had the good sense to redevelop and redesign what it is a car should be 😉. Or we could be more modern in our observations and use the news as our comparison subject. There are many many news outlets pretty much covering the same headline stories. Yet we don't complain about the channels we don't watch, or maybe you do, we just watch the one that is familiar to us for whatever reason that may be. Anyhow, hope you now know how to take a sharp photo! Lots of love from the 'UK'.

@@timshields8720 You see, this is where I sometimes have an issue with comments, and those that make them. While I agree whole-heartedly that constructive criticism is both necessary and rewarding for all concerned - I'm sure Mike would agree, too - it has to at least come from having watched/listened to or somehow interacted with the content on offer. As a subscriber, I'm sure you already know Mike's style and the content he tries to cover, surely that's why you subscribed in the first place. What you do from here on in is your choice...
