I feel like on one hand, while it does take you out of the fantasy, at the same time it's kind of a show like you said that the elements of emo sad boi toxic viego were always present

@@Chrono_topher I think his smile is genuine,his love as overly obsessive as it is for Isolde is very genuine. As OP said,this skin shows how Viego never really changed as a person, the difference between human Viego and ruined king Viego is just looks. He always had the same motivation to resurrect Isolde and will push the extreme if that's what he needed to do to achieve his goal. His voice line highlights this the most,he still said the messed up things he said as Ruined King Viego except without the voice filter.its weird how removing a simple voice filter can add some substance to a character.
I also like to think it alludes to his more dramatic fall from grace later on as well
it really suffers from what a lot of lore skins struggle with. they get dressed believably and feel like npc characters

Honestly I love King Viego for the reason you said, he look likes a fairytale prince and even if its just a skin, its always nice to see champions that aren't either straight edge or straight kawaii. But it also shows why someone would fall for someone so toxic. Sometimes you don't see the red flags at the military parade because you're too busy looking at the nice uniforms and big tanks.

My personal head cannon is that Isolde was the one doing his laundry and the first time he tried to do it himself after her death he shrank all his clothes which is why he wears a jacket that's too small and tight pants

Viego has always been a particularly chilling character to observe for me personally. I am newlywed to a woman I love more than anything, and while I don't think I have Viego's obsessive sense of self-importance or entitlement, I see how his grief over the loss of the woman he loved twists him into a monster and can't help but think: "how would I react if I lost my wife? What would I become?"
It's why I can't help but feel a twinge of sympathy for Viego, even though I will never condone the actions he takes. They say the most effective and scary monsters are those you can see parts of yourself in and I suppose, for me at least, that's Viego.
Honestly the recall and death animations are the best part of the skin. They show his descent into darkness, eventually culminating into The Ruined King.
These bonus shorts give me life, if I'm honest. There's nothing better than looking at my subscriptions and realizing there's a SECOND TBSkyen short
I wholly believe King Viego should have been legendary and come with custom voicelines. A version of Viego without the distorted whispy voice, more panicked as he searches for his lost love than bitter for her demise.

Use it for what? I’ve honestly felt that Isolde has enough representation in the game with Gwen(who she made).
Adding her to the game would take away from that empty hole left by her absence. It’s like how reviving a character in other forms of fiction cheapens their death, and in a sense reverses all the feelings felt for their death.
(And the ruination is a physical manifestation of that grief/loss, corrupting the world of Runeterra)
Hope Kalista can get a skin like that too.
The only issue I can see is the spears in her chest.

She was human but got corrupted by the mist like Viego and other champs, getting a pre ruination skin for her (and maybe some of the others) could be interesting.

Kalista was Viego's general and his niece. She was the one who found the Blessed Isles and led Viego there to try and revive Isolde.
I feel like rather than Viego from the past, this is Viego's own fantasy, how he sees himself even after the ruination. That's probably the only way to justify him having the same voice lines, lol. I wish this was a legendary, with all original voice lines to get more characterization for his old self.

in my interpretation, In game This skin is basically just viego Fantasizing, basically we're seeing what he sees himself as in game, A Regal and noble Prince/King.
Though no matter how much he fantasizes his true Self Still Seeps through and when he dies The Fantasy flickers out and he wakes up to Reality
I love the little detail that, Viego's weapon of choice is a Zweihander, which despite being the coolest sword ever made, it's completely useless, entirely meant as a parade piece and not something you would see in a real battlefield, so it fits his personality rather well, a weapon meant more as a status symbol and a big visual eye candy, for a king that is all about appearances and a romanticized self image.
Edit: I was made aware that the swords did see use by german units and were effective against pikes and such.
As far as I remember zweihänders were actually used on the battlefield by the german landsknechte to combat pike formations but I see your point about showing off, especially with Viego's personality
That's not right; Zweihanders were used on the battlefield. Specifically against pike formations around 1500 or so by German mercenaries. His piece is decorative because it has two guards, which would make it impossible to wield properly
They were used as fairly effective battlefield weapons by landsknecht infantry for a short period embedded into pike formations during the early 16th century, but quickly fell out of favor as firearms like the arquebus came into play and pike formations evolved into pike and shot formations.
That's when they then lost most practical application and became a parade weapon mostly relevant for bodyguards, who also started falling out of favor as centralization of power made banditry less common.
I'd hardly call it useless though, it had it's uses, but like most swords there's little point compared to just using a polearm in a battlefield situation. It does benefit from being the most polearm like of swords at least, so it's a sword version of history's best melee weapons.
If I remember correctly, the blade (called Sanctity) is actually passed down between the kings of Camavor, and was used when they went to battle, but I'm sure it being this grandiose show-off weapon was also a big part to show their king status.
@@Lajinn6 huh, I didn't know that, I was aware that the sword saw some use, but most of what I read painted it as a parade piece, a big, show off blade for body guards and elite swordsmen to carry around and look cool and impressive.
My headcanon about this skin is that it takes place immediately after the loss of Isolde. Viego hasn’t yet been physically corrupted by the ruination, but already his toxic devotion is manifesting in unspeakable and cruel ways. (His animations, voice lines and so forth).
This skin is basically Anakin Skywalker in Episode 3, the Revenge of the Sith. You can clearly see it is still Anakin there who has yet to be fully and completely transformed into Darth Vader, but his corruption into a dark lord of the sith has already taken place and nearly utterly and totally replaced the boy warrior from tatooine. All that is left is quite literally the shell of a man who once was.
Isolde is literally in the splashart dawg.

Who gives af about the splash art anyway? Half the splash art for League's skins aren't accurate to the skin themselves at all, so I don't see how that is anywhere near a valid criticism.
Viego is essentially the Arthas of Runeterra. Skin looks awesome, can't wait for the novel.

He's probably the most downbad(?) Simp in entire champ pool.
His recall animation is enough to put a lore.
honestly instead of making him the toxic boyfriend they should have stuck with the original they loved each other and had arguments like any other couple and when he was losing her the most human part of him showed where anyone In his situation would do the same to keep the person they love alive but they paint that as obsessive when most of the most tragic characters in games and tv did the same
Yeah i really don't like going with the toxic partner for viego i feel it takes away from he's character, and honestly grief is a very complicated feeling that eats you out entirely and never truly goes away,so I am not sure if it's correct to portray him as obsessed for wanting to get her back and trying to keep her alive it's he's actions and the length he would go to take it , and i think it should be acknowledged more that hecarim and thresh were manipulating him and taking advantage of him at he's lowest to their own twisted goals Bec i feel like lots of characters especially Gwen act like he already was a monster and that he was and is the biggest threat from the shadow Isles when i would say that thresh and hecarim are way worse and thresh is still a reoucring threat and honestly viego was trapped and in a slumber all the years before it he didn't even create the harrowing and yoricks story with illaoi confirmed that trapping him didn't undo the ruination so I would say he's as trapped as all the other souls in there) and unlike viego who only became more violent when he was losing isolde hecarim and thresh were already monsters and were already taking pleasure in hurting other inocent people . when the ruination killed them it only revealed the monsters inside of them while viego and kalista had all that was good in them erased and only left their worst treats.
Tldr: viego work best as a tragic villain that became the way he is Bec of grief and he couldn't cope in effective ways bec bad people took advantage of him at he's worst rather than going with the " he was a bad husband all along and he destroyed isoldes life " and the walking red flag everyone insist he is it should be pointed out more that he only act like this Bec of the ruination
When i first heard of the Ruined King i thought he was some old, clad in armor and bearded man. Then when he was revealed he was literally the opposite of what i expected. I kinda hated it at first but i learned to like it
I absolutely love that they went for a young king that just cant rule his kingdom and not the stereotypical old man.

This skins looks great. I really hope they do more stuff related to the book, there’s so much potential. They could explore the human/original forms of a ton of characters. I wonder how they’d do Hecarim as I think he was said to be pretty terrible even before the Ruination.

I actually like the contrast of the design and the animations. It shows that, despite how he presents himself, Viego has a temper. It's very "Clone Wars Anakin Skywalker."
They're shining, brave heroes who clearly have inner monsters that you know are fated to take over.
As someone who's unfamiliar with the lore, "Before the ruination turned him into the ruined king" is an objectively hilarious sentence.
Feel like this has such potential for Arcane or a movie. I love the idea of someone "loving" someone so much they bring them back to life only for the person being brought back begging to just be dead in peace.
It’s kinda like the reality of his current situation is bleeding through into the perfect prince memories he has. Kind of interesting in that regard.

I really like the skin because I like to think of the skin as an illusion. He’s a ghost and corpse that disguised himself as human with this skin and like you said it shows that all the toxic traits fits this skin as well and was always there ruination or not.

So since his animations doesn't really make him feel like a softboi prince, the fix would be to let hime borrow some of fiora's fencing animations.
His Q could have him do a fencers thrust; for his W he could charge it in an upright standing position, confidently walking towards his enemies, rather than the slouched struggling walk he does; his ult could have him do a ballet spin as he arrives at the target location.
I know additional animations might up the price of the skin, but it would give it more character imo.

AHA! I tackle the animation hurdle by running the silver chroma to mimic what it would look like when lovely king viego has to go to war. Then his toxic traits shine through in an emersive way due to it looking like knight armour

I don't play league, but the dark parts I'm the animation adds another layer, if unintentional.
This is how he sees himself, even when he has been corrupted. He doesn't see himself as a dark king, but a chivalrous prince
Stuff like this is why I find the idea of the black most terrifying. Being stuck as the worst possible version of yourself dialed up to eleven sounds like a nightmare, with even the most chill people possibly harboring absolute monsters

What I like about this skin is it get rid of parts I didn't like from base skins. Those being the bare chest and weird belts he had. How disliked those parts were when he was first released, mocked as eboy or hot topic. People got used to that when they came to term with how viego is more of a romantic king and less of warrior king. But it still bothered me that it looked more "modern pretty boy" and less "regal medieval monarch". This fixes those issue for me, I just wish his base skin was more like that but more wraithly...
they should make the animation feel less snapy at start , and more suave (for lack of better term) toward the end , it would be """just"""" a matter of speed of animation but it would fix them
Tbh, king viego should've got the Ultimate skin treatment, like at minute 1 you have the King Viego skin, and slowly as the game goes on, his skin starts to reveal dark mist, until like minute 30 or something like that he become more like the bade skin, but with some Visual differences

I love the edgy animations, it feels like we're seeing King Viego when no one close to him is, seeing the hints of edge and villainy, like Anakin slowly doing more and more morally grey things throughout Star Wars The Clone Wars, showing you that there is a certain darkness that he tries to hide.

I feel people tend to just demonize him without agnoliging the tragedy of the fact that he was literally spoiled, surrounded by horrible people, had no parents for rolemodels and was expected to rule which he never asked or was prepared for.
yeah, im sad that none of the "lore" creators talked about ruination novel in depth, the novel really adds a lot to his background, even tho we dont know much details its clear that him being neglected as a child made him turn out like this, and no one talks about the fact that he didnt want kalista to leave to blessed isles, he was sending hecarim but kal offered herself and that was also a breaking point for him i mean she was his only emotional support and the person he always looked up and yet she leave him when he needed her the most making him easier to manipulate and decend into madness

The difference between a beauty and a beast is that a beast has all the ugliness on the surface.
You know what you're getting into when you get in bed with a monster, as there's security in showing all the hideousness front and center. Once you dig past the surface it only goes uphill from there.
A beautiful prince has all his imperfections hidden. All that is left is to deconstruct the perfection by slowly noticing flaws.
That makes him a far more subtle monster
