      @@WickensWickedReptiles Shouldn't they also get occasional insects?
      I mean I think it partly depends on the individual. I think some geckos will do fine on smoothie but some will be much happier having insects.
      I mean the insects are super simple too. Just pick up a small bag of crickets and throw them in their enclosure. Instant enrichment.

      @@Upper_echelon_exotics it is best to also give them insects, but will survive without.
      What make this handy is not always having a colony on hand and if the colony dies for whatever reason or you end up between jobs your geckos will survive.
      I also like to keep frozen fruit. One time last winter I was stranded for a week and could not make it to town for powder. The fruit saved the day, my geckos loved banana mashed with blueberries.

      @@synthesizer8026 You could also get some reptile vitamins and calcium to add to the fruits. That way you know your geckos are getting vitamins they need. Big containers are pretty cheap and last a pretty long time. That way if you find yourself stuck without their smoothie mix you can mix up your own. I use it for my snakes and frogs too and it lasts forever.

    Here's a hack I discovered: for reptiles that do best at room tempature such as cresties, they still benifit from having a heat source for thermoregulation. The solution is using depleted UVB bulbs. Since they don't provide enough UVB for reptiles that require them, but still have a very mild amount, and a mild amount of heat, they're great for lighting and heating crestie enclosures and anything else that does well at room tempature.

      @samanson2001 Před 5 měsíci

      @photographychannel3875 I know you asked this a year ago however I thought I'd chip in as it seems no one provided an answer. We don't have any aircon but during heatwaves we sprayed cold water into his enclosure more frequently to cool the temperature in there and kept an eye on his thermometer. We also occasionally had a fan pointing at his enclosure to give a bit of a wind chill affect and our crestie is still going strong several years later. This has been during heatwaves where the temperature in our house has exceeded 35C.

I've never had a reptile pet before so something that's needs are a bit more straightforward is definitely probably the best option, the only major downside is the fragility you mentioned but I've owned much more fragile animals before (like mice) so its certainly not something that fully discourages me.

I would not have known how much of a reptile/lizard person I am until I got him! And my other crested gecko is a juvenile (3-4 months?) and is not used to handling. I love them both dearly! Gizmo, the juvenile, will eat mealworms for me and it’s so cute! Nubby, my adult, will ONLY eat the powder! But he loves to run around and explore, he loves to just hang out on my shoulder… I do wish they did more, interaction-wise, but honestly, I love just how easy their care is! I am confident that, for my first reptiles, I am taking care of them well! And they are oh-so loved (even if Gizmo hates me still)!

    I have a little crestie myself, Eko. Every time I see him I smile, he's almost always curled up, or stretched out, or just in a generally odd but cute position, and he snaps at the (Dead and calcium dusted) crickets as if they are about to disappear at a moments notice. Whenever I'm gone he goes dark brown, and whenever I come back after being away for a while, he comes to where he's visible and goes to a much lighter shade. Yes, he's slow, Yes, he runs away a lot, but he's also adorable, and loves climbing on people.
    If you want a somewhat playful reptile that's easy to take care of, a crestie is probably your best bet.

    I've had my adult female crestie, Glenda, for a month and she is healthy and active, but she keeps chirping and I'm not sure why. Usually, chirping indicates some sort of stress or sign of feeling threatened, but I can hand feed her, move things in her enclosure, and nearly touch her without her making a sound or fleeing at all. Sometimes when she is not in the mood, she goes to hide in her log, and then I leave her alone, so if she feels threatened then why doesn't she flee? Though she was handled lots by her previous owner, I have not handled her yet as I want to establish trust with her. Sometimes they chirp when they are hungry, but she is well fed. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. She only chirps when I have my hand still in front of her. Again, I can move the plants around an inch from her face and she doesn't care. Sometimes, she moves towards me, licks my hand, and then chirps. I don't get it. Do you have any advice or answers for me? I would appreciate any input.

    When I hear the comment about them being boring, I just roll my eyes and ignore them. My first and only crestie, Midgarsomner or Midgar, is HIGHLY curious, has high food drive, constantly watches over what I do, and attacks or tries to attack my cat from behind the glass. He's literally a little dragon protecting his hoard. I love him. He's also really brave and isn't scared of noise or being picked up, still has his tail and everything. He does get jumpy when you move his house but that's understandable. Did I also mention He's 4 and is still rambunctious!
