  • Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson has influenced the popular romanticized depiction of fearless pirates with secret maps and talking parrots. In fact, the classic adventure tale provided the basis of numerous elements widely associated with pirates today. Published as a book in 1883, Treasure Island was not the first story about buccaneers and buried gold, but has certainly become one of the most impactful.
With its fantastic characters and vivid imagery, it’s no surprise that Treasure Island has brought about countless adaptations and pirate films:
    Treasure Island (1934)
Starring Jackie Cooper and Wallace Beery
    Treasure Island (1950)
Starring Bobby Driscoll and Robert Newton
    Treasure Island (1990)
Starring Christian Bale and Charlton Heston
    Muppet Treasure Island (1996)
Starring Kevin Bishop and Tim Curry
    Chapters:
    0:00 Prologue
    0:57 Treasure Island (1934)
    2:30 Treasure Island (1950)
    3:49 Treasure Island (1990)
    5:18 Muppet Treasure Island (1996)
    6:25 Epilogue

The Charlton Heston and Christian Bale version with Heston's son directing is the most complete version. You want to reread the book after viewing this version.

1950 is the best movie version. It’s not the most accurate but Robert Newton’s portrayal of Long John helped create the pirate method we all cherish today. No Jack Sparrow without John Silver.

Not really. Robert Newton was a bit of a buffoon, as Wallace Beery before him. The best Long John Silver, "by a long sea mile", was Charlton Heston, and his Treasure Island, "filled to the scuppers" with great actors the likes of Pete Postlethwaite, Oliver Reed, Christopher Lee, Julian Glover, even Christian Bale, is the best movie made from this book, ever.

Yes, but only if they can do it right. The trend recently has been to add lots of CGI and play fast and loose with the source material. Think of recent Sherlock Holmes and Three Musketeers adaptations. Simply dreadful.
I vote instead for a BBC production!

I think it's interesting that Jackie Cooper and Bobby Driscoll both did versions of Treasure Island, as they were both the biggest male child stars of their respective eras. You can see how their different appeals played out while portraying the same character. Cooper always had that up-for-anything street kid appeal, where as Driscoll was always the wide eyed innocent experiencing everything for the first time.

How can you discuss the 1990 film and not mention soundtrack by The Chieftains? Also the use of an actual ship (The Bounty.. sadly lost several years ago). I tell people all the time that the 1990 version of Treasure Island is hands down the best adaptation of a book into a movie that I've seen.

    • @arnoldronning5471
      @arnoldronning5471 Před 3 lety +4

Agreed. The musical soundtrack is absolutely first rate. Fraser Heston, son of acting legend Charleton Heston, did a magnificent job. The photography, the performances, costumes, ship, and everything are first rate about the film. Some complained that Charleton Heston was too serious, but the book is a harrowing account of a young man suddenly thrown into a fight for his life and searching for his identity. Young Christian Bale is hands down the best Jim Hawkins that I have seen.

After watching the National Theatre's production of Treasure Island (with Arthur Darvill as Silver, and a female Jim Hawkins and doctor character), I found myself interested to watch some of the other adaptations as well. I think Muppet Treasure Island is pretty fun, but there's definitely some things I would've trimmed from the story. For one, I think Jim has to compete for attention since he's paired up with Gonzo AND Rizzo, and most of the time, he's just not as fun to watch. Tim Curry does a really good job of treating the material seriously. I'd be interested to know what you think of Treasure Planet! That one seemed to be the one that was the most focused on the relationship between Silver and Jim. -S

Hey there Scrivener, fancy seeing you here! I watched Treasure Planet for the first time myself last week, and I really, really enjoyed it, especially the handling of Jim & Silver's relationship, as well as mature topics such as abandonment and choosing between friends or greed. Before that, I had only seen the Muppet version, and without a doubt Tim Curry's performance is my favorite thing about it; and you're right, it does feel like Kevin Bishop (Jim) had to somewhat struggle to keep up whilst working with Rizzo and Gonzo. But I'm not surprised that you enjoyed it, considering how passionate you were about Muppet Christmas Carol :). Anyway, I'd love to see you do a full review on it at some point (if you haven't already, that is). 😄

I love the book and remember, still, reading it before sleeping as a 8/9yo and feeling very much like Jim. But I don't know any of the adaptations in the video (I would watch them in the future for sure), because the first, and only one, I knew it was an old, old TV Serie made by RAI (the Italian public broadcasting TV) in B&W from the 50s (I think) that was brougth back when I was a chldren much later.
I wonder if the book has lost some of its appeal for the contemporary children since the adventure is mostly rooted in "time" rather than "space" exoticism now-

Like the muppet version, Jim Hawkins in my own version of Treasure Island has two best friends. Their names r Sam & Peter, two orphaned boys who live with jim & his mother & help them run the Admiral Benbow Inn since both their parents died. Jim & his mother were so kind to them, taking them both in & giving them a roof over their heads & food every day. Sam & peter accompany their best friend, jim Hawkins on the hispaniola to help him find flintstones treasure. They did become jealous when jim spends more time with Long john silver than with them but jim assures them that hes only a new friend & he still has them. When all three of them r eating apples inside the apple barrel, they overhear long john revealing to be a treacherous pirate, talking to the pirate crew & their evil plan of mutiny!
