Is the Sony A7cII the best budget full frame hybrid camera on the market in 2024? It has a couple big downsides but even with those this camera delivers amazing photos and great video footage with some of the features sony has been putting in their newest cameras. The Sony A7cII is an absolutely fantastic hybrid camera for anyone looking to upgrade in 2024!

Thank you for showing off the camera without any crazy filters or styles that make the video look blurry and grainy!! I hope you upload more videos of just pure nature with this camera, I am really wanted to buy it but it is so hard to justify the price!!
I don't own one personally but I do rent and borrow one from time to time
Love these videos where you actually spent some serious time in the outdoors to test the camera! Keep going Jake.
thank you! I believe real world on location testing yields the best information for most of us
I've been an amateur photographer for 45 years. So, as you might imagine, I'm looking to lighten my load. I've been using two A7R5 cameras. But, I'm seriously thinking about replacing them with an A7CR and an A7CII.
I think I would keep one a7r5 and get the a7cII, great combo but you still have a camera with an excellent EVF which sadly the A7cII is lacking in a decent evf
@@JakeSloan Thanks for the reply. Actually I've already bought an A7CR and an A7CII. I like both. The viewfinder doesn't bother me or the single card slot. And I like the grip extension. But, the A7RV is a better camera. If I was a pro I would definitely choose the A7R5 over the A7C cameras.
Sold the ZV-E1 for this. Absolutely love this camera! ❤
Good choice!
Love to see you and your content brother .... Love From Pakistan
thanks so much
Hey I love the video I’m currently debating whether to get the a7cii with the Sony 50mm f/2.5 lens. Or get the Sony a6700 with the kit 10-20mm lens along with the sigma 30mm f/1.4 lens. My ultimate goal is just to take videos and edit them to have them look cinematic like some I’ve seen online. As well as take some pictures, but mostly videos. Please help, I’ve done extensive research and the a6700 is loved by many, and I can’t find much information on the a7c ii (maybe due to the crazy price difference). Yet again great video!!
if you can afford to get the a7cII then I would do that, you get much better low light performance and dynamic range overall
@@JakeSloan thank you! I ended up getting it yesterday
just bought a a7c2 and i set the 10 bit 4.2.2 color, 4k 60p 200mbps file setting, but the file does not process in my video editor, pinnacle studio v26 ult. so what editors do you people use to edit these files?
10bit might be the issue. Try cap cut but otherwise you might need to purchase an editor like davinci resolve or film in 8bit
just got a a7c2 and i notice that the ther is a lot of unstable movement while I am walking. setting steady to active helped alittle, but it still was choppy. so what do you advise to reduce this bad effect? movie is the other half of the hybrid form.
For walking shots you have to make sure your footsteps aren’t hard so walk softly lol. That helps a lot
Hi Jake! Good to see your health is still holding up.
Thank you! finally got over whatever that was
thanks for review. Yes i traded my a7riv for this because easier to handle, animal eye focus better and files are easier. Do you know how to get a photo out of my 4k video i take?
The only way I am aware of is import the video into an editing program and then export a single frame
What camera is better with rolling shutter than the A7CII? Is there a good work around or technique?
You shot some images with a 16mm lens, no brand mentioned. Did you use the 16-35 zoom for the shots or a prime?
I mean the Sony ZV-e1 has excellent rolling shutter but only 12mp stills which is actually more than enough for most stuff honestly. Everything from the ice climbing and ice cave was taken with the sony 16-35 GM II so any photo with 16mm was taken with that lens
a7cii owner here who intends to actually use the camera for "high action" footage: My workaround is to primarily shoot in APS-C crop mode at 50p/60p (PAL/NTSC) which features a faster sensor readout speed. This also has the positive side effect that the camera will encode the footage using the more efficient H.265 codec (thus smaller files). If you want to record in full frame mode and have issues with rolling shutter in your footage, you can check out the open source "gyroflow" tool. It allows you to both stabilize your footage using the gyro metadata embedded in your files as well as correct rolling shutter.
I got to try an A7CII last week and thought it was fantastic overall, but the shutter sound seemed really loud to me. I have only used smaller sensor cameras before, so I don't know if it's because the shutter is just bigger or if other FF cameras have softer shutter sounds. But, I would feel uncomfortable using it in quiet settings like museums, presentations etc. I know you can use electronic shutter instead, but that can result in banding depending on the lighting. Obviously outdoors the shutter sound would generally not be an issue of course. Can you tell me if the larger A7 cameras have the same shutter sound, or are they quieter (or louder?!).
Every one of them has their own sound but they are all about the same loudness
@@JakeSloanthanks for the info
How is the 16-35 gm ii weight on this body? Too front heavy?
Not too bad honestly. The GM 1 would have been too front heavy but the GM ii is much lighter and smaller
hey, I have a question for you because I heard that the Sony a7c ii is "more plastic" than the first version a7c, something like the zv e1. Does this only apply to the black version or is the silver version also made of the same material as the black one?
Mine seemed very similar to the original
@@JakeSloan black or silver?
A7cii not support type A memory card. But All-i bit rate 600mb... which card best for cii ? I am little bit confused about a7iv or a7cii. Basically I am a wedding photographer. My need both photography and Cinematography.
For wedding stuff I’d definitely go for the a7iv for the dual card slot safety. For the best cards besides the CFexpress A cards I’d look at the UHS-II cards from Sony.
@@JakeSloan Thank you 😊
IMO, even if the 4k60 is cropped it still is oversampled; therefore, extra crispy! I came to the conclusion a few months ago that this was the perfect travel camera (and backup to my A7RV). BTW, I have the Smallrig grip (a great add).
agreed!!
Nice Jake! Such a great camera!
thanks and agreed!!
Thinking about buying this. Would be going from a canon t7i. I want full frame, mirrorless, evf and be able to also shoot at least 4k 30fps and great stills. Pricey for me but thinking about pulling the trigger.
Definitely would be a big upgrade from the t7i!
Love mine, it’s become my daily carry- I have a ton of street photography & video work samples on my channel.
I’m taking it as my B cam to shoot Lionel Messi this Wednesday. ⚽️ 📸
Excited is an understatement.
fantastic!! great examples too!
Thanks Jake! Means a ton! You're the reason I work full-time creating content now. You are the GOAT!!! @@JakeSloan
this camera is sick 🔥
agreed! I saw you found much the same results in your video.
Just got myself a a6400 and amped to push it to the max
NICE!! I had that camera for a while and it's great!
The quality and effort of your reviews is appreciated. Except by the magical You Tube alleged algorithm. 🎉🎉🎉 While You Tube happily throws every bit of slick willy sponsored toy reviews my way with mega views, I always come back to the look and feel and information of your little productions. Feels like I am in an organic market after a trip to McDonald's. Thanks Jake.
hahahahahahaha "organic market after a trip to McDonalds" SUCH a great line! Thank you very much for the kind words.
Cameras great, but the scenery.... is just ahw jaw-dropping.
Agreed!
Has Ai features but not on the A1 😢
listen here Eddie... You going to be coming on my channel stirring the pot and all... Don't tell anyone but I am working on an A1vsA9III review right now. Looks like I might be keeping the A1 for a bit longer
lol glad to hear. I still think without all the new enhacements, the A1 quality is still so darn good! @@JakeSloan
I'm leaning towards this camera from an A7III
Huge upgrade!
A7RV 😊
@@lewcehjitl3282 too expensive
i prefer the canon r8 over this.
I haven't had the chance to use that camera but I'm sure it's great
What?? Base FF camera vs this mid range Sony FF?
I lean a6700 over a7cii
For a great budget camera I think the a6700 is fantastic
The Sony a6700 is my main camera. I do mainly interviews of tattoo artists. I need to do both video and some photos. I just love that camera. I even got a second one after selling my FX3. I used to have both the FX3 and FX30, but 'downgraded' to the a6700. For CZcams videos, it delivers what I need. My lenses are the Sigma 10-18mm 2.8 and Sigma 18-50mm 2.8. My mic is the ECM-M1.
@BehindTheNeedle damn dude you've got the dream setup. Great concept behind your production too!
@@johntupper1369 Thanks man. A lot of trial and error. I travel a bit and I really want to keep my load light.
I also realized that for CZcams "good enough" is "good enough." And the a6700 is exactly that.
I also feel a lot better traveling with a cheaper setup. When I was on the road with the FX3 and full frame lenses, I was always worried that I would either damage the gear or it would get stolen.
Now, I sleep better at night and the quality of my videos is still great.
obviously when you buy a ”budget” camera you combine it with expensive gm lens and fly a helicopter to shoot some photos and video 😂
obviously... 😂
Almost $2K for just the body is considered "budget'?
Well yes and no. There are other options out there for smaller budgets as well.
I have noticed that the AWB of Sony A7CII is terrible that varied significantly in the same snow scene of your video. How could you stand for it? I could not!
Was it in the same shot or between shots? I do have One solution: don’t shoot in auto…
Budget? Not sure I would call it a budget camera
there are cheaper options as well
