Switzerland's Ungfell have established themselves as an unstoppable force of intricate, yet undeniably immersive riff fury in a scene that frequently replaces memorable songwriting with pseudo-intellectual gibberish. Affiliated with the formidable Helvetic Underground Committee, Ungfell has provided the unsuspecting masses with music that is undeniably engaging and yet challenging, delving into local lore and legends with a depth and a knack for wit that is rarely seen in contemporary extreme metal music.
On their third full-length album, "Es grauet", Ungfell abducts listeners on a sonic journey detailing moral ambivalence and treachery. Set in a seemingly idyllic rural village in pre-modern times, all is not as it seems. Tragedy strikes the town in the form of a horrific, grisly murder. Unfounded accusations lead the town further astray, while these occurences of debauchery exceed the comprehension of the local inhabitants. Alas, evil lurks where you may least expect it... The story unfolds, accompanied by ravaging riffs and gripping songwriting that appropriately underline the complex, yet harrowing narrative. "Es grauet" shows Ungfell at their most ambitious and most audacious, featuring incredibly dynamic and warm production values, emphasizing atmosphere even more than previous releases and managing to compliment the story being told.

I can't get over how overwhelmingly happy this release makes me. It is pure excellent, selfishly, Ungfell managed to execute exactly what I was hoping for from this release.

1. It's dawning upon the village (In a way that no one could have guessed)
Some time ago gruesome events took place in a village deep in the mountains. Death and doom have descended on the residents and razed the place to the ground.
Let this tale be a warning to you...
2. Devil's Face (How a whore conceives two children)
A woman as ugly as the night she is
Rotten and cold hearted.
Ungodly this woman is and that's why she accepts it
To give away her body for her daily bread.
But one day as she is acting on her business
and by doing so letting the goat-legged get behind her,
the mangy civil-servant is a witness of this devil's ride
and forces the ghastly whore to do what he wants from her.
Devil's Face - Avert your eyes!
So that I can bring forth to you the incarnate!
Devil's Face - The sky/heaven's dont mean well
and that's why hell's embers are falling on Heinzenberg (mountain region in Graubünden)
Now silently in the mother's womb the plague is growing.
Two bodies tightly embraced - One will united in hate.
And soon enough the Bastard-pubs are breathing in earth's air.
Two ugly brats they are: bloody, crooked and pale.
For heaven's sake, damned be!
Go and kill those children.
Those brothers both belong into the fire
For they are demons.
For heaven's sake, this can't be real!
The misery is taking its course.
And for the village to turn into a cemetary
It's not going to take long anymore.
3. The Blackbird (How the two brats became priests)
That's how the incarnate was able to get into the village. The goat-legged was hiding his face for years, but in the dark he was always pulling the strings.
And so the young men were ordained as priests and tragedy unfolded.
4. Murder in the valley (How a devious murder is commited)
Time is passing through the land
and slowly those boys morph into the price for this shame
As hunched as they are clever
Over the years the two develop a love for suffering.
And so they hate this world
Hate this woman that is whoring for money.
And so they despise the blood
Despise the mother that is sinning.
Murder, Murder, Murder in the valley
Sink this rabble in the river.
Down, down, down with torment
Nothing to change their decision.
With a ghastly scream
this woman with her husband are falling
through the bushes and onto the stones.
Shattered from the fall
those corpses will soon drift on
and not long till they're gone.
All of these happenings are witnessed by the Widow Anna.
The wrinkled woman is silent and doesn't tell a soul.
But soon after as the bloody figures are washed ashore.
Her bad conscience weighs heavily and she runs to the civil-servant.
5. The song of bones (How an accused woman is being tortured and getting visions)
Now she's lying here
and is screaming for help
Curses this devilish man
for all times.
Because the civil-servant
and father of this murderous rabble
Doesn't care that they are guilty
Therefore she has to suffer.
They tighten the screws
And the limbs will break soon.
The song of bones is howling today through the walls into the land.
The granny is screaming in agony and shame.
And now as the crumbling is overcoming the mind
The widow sings about the forthcoming.
A thunderstorm will arrive, horrific like never before
That will wash away the house of god and draw it towards satan.
Down in the village the people are dying like flies and are witnesses
Of how disease and delusion bends their will with bloody ravage.
Anna, You poor soul
Wrongly accused and perished by violence.
Anna, Your words in gods ear
These hounds shall suffer and soon enough these villagers will stand in front of the gate of hell.
6. Hurried Prayer (How this woman is executed as a witch)
There is indeed no human on earth
that could deliver me.
That's why I call upon the heavens
that could deliver me.
But when this calling is futile
The devil will do just as well.
Mischief shall fall upon this village
No soul will be saved from death.

And so the devilish woman left this world in pain.
It is said of her that she conjured up the green man. Together they apparently killed two villagers down in the valley.

7. The doom priests of Heinzenberg (How death and ruin collapse on the village)
After the widow died so miserably
All of sudden the civil-servant is shook by his doings
Soon he won't be able to sleep well anymore.
Anna's curse causes the man to be very worried
He's afraid of this witch-being
That all of the sudden read into the future.
Therefore he takes back the corpse out of the bare grave
and quickly cuts off her little head
which then rolls down the mountain.
And the grimaces can't find it in the tangle of rocks
That's why the curse remains
That she has cast herself.
Grab them
Grab them by their skin and hair.
Their screams; so ghastly, so sweet
So wonderful.
Rotten in heart
they died one after one..
Dead and degenerated
He took them with him.
The doom priests of Heinzenberg
Are being carried in their coffins.
The landslide grabbed them
Because of the devil's pact
And took them with.
Help they were both looking for
In this holy book
God wouldn't arrive
8. The falling of rocks (How evil is buried)
And so small and big, pointy and round stones detached themselves from the mountain and fell into the valley as if all of sudden,
they decided to put every soul in the village below to death. In all this shaking and noise it was almost as if one could hear someone laugh.

this album reminded me at least early ULVER & STILLE VOLK at times (that is a complement to any band, i guess)👍though this duo goes a way further - outstanding riffing & destinctive folkish feel make this one a TRULY SWISS BM Masterpiece🤘

Amazing stuff, but sadly it's so short compared to the other full lengths
the better the music, the faster it travels... haha, honestly, for us the album is "round" and complete as it sits. We understand that some listeners/fans may say, "Hey guys this ain`t long enough", but you gotta have some goals for the next albums, right?

Pronunciation is like "Oon-gfell".
Ungfell is an old swiss word and means misfortune, bad luck.
In german commonly the prefix "Un" is used to negotiate the main word. So "Gfell" (=fortune) is negotiated to misfortune.
