Thank you for thorough, tongue in cheek, review. With all this said, I think I will go with next year's 1090 unless they go and add more electronics again.
Great review man. Thinking about getting a 2018 model. Hope all glitches were fixed.
Amazing video review. This is what youtube is all about. Thanks
Thanks for realy good review.
Great review like your style 👍
I'm about to buy a 1190 adv. Thanks for the useful tips and tricks from someone who's used it plenty.
I am not a credible source! You follow the advice of an imbecile, use caution.
Great review mate! Hello from California!
I just got one and WOW......
friggin AWESOME....
A good review, and as you tell, personal...
Just bought a 1290 SA R based on your evaluation, Nerb1's and others. Most problems and design issues of the 1x90 series are now well documented and can be adressed easily. That 1290 makes me grin every day I ride it! Already own a 690 RFR, but this beast is vastly superior in luggage capacity and touring capabilities on tarmac and fire-road grade gravelroads ;-)
Dear God...it happened. People are actually listening to my opinions. I expect locusts and frogs to befall the land shortly.
The 1290 will not be hindered by these, but the frogs will make the roads slippery.
We're not plagued by locust or frog pandemics here in Norway ;-) Might be it's a South Africa phenomenon ;-)
again, i'm a lucky customer... i bought a 2015 mod and never have any of those issues, the bike is great...!!
I like your take on it! :) It´s true, much got better on the 1090. Similar tyre conclusion. :)
im sold on the 2018 1090 R...what a beast...I should have mine in a few weeks!
Patrick Flinner Sir I feel I did have some helpful tips from your experience as I move forward with mine...I will be looking into your tire selection thank you for the post
This is a really good review. Funny, informative, and to the point. The question is, would you buy this KTM again?
Anyway, thanks a lot for posting this.
Again? If you only do touring and fire roads: Yes. Proper off road travel: No. Too heavy, too complicated.
Glad to help.
I was looking for KTM 1290 SAR but I have to say that they are not practical thought, I mean for easy maintenance like cleaning the air filter I have to dismount the entire gas tank...with my GSA, I take out the upper plastic and done. Like mentioned for coolant liquid I just take out an opening and done, no need to take out an entire side. Let’s see what BMW brings with the new engine
life gets a lot easier when you say:"its not a bug,its a feature"
good review man, just in time as I'm looking for getting 1090 adv r.
Great video. More helpfull then most "profesional" reviews. Any advice on seat hight? Any option to lower setting without touching suspension?
If you mean sitting and putting feet down while stationary, then a lower seat option from KTM would be the easiest option. While riding again a seat or a different set of foot pegs. Wearing adventure boots may help as well as their sole is usually thicker. Seatconcepts.com comes to mind as well.
Lol... loved the subtle humour.
Very thorough review.
Its funny, mine is a 2013 and ive had very few problems. I actually wonder, because the bikes are hand built, is there a lot of variance in the build quality? Did i get a monday bike while a lot of problems occur with friday afternoon bikes?
I sometimes wonder about that too...
I think that they fix / develop on the fly or the quality control in the internment camps is lacking supervision.
I recently rode a 1090 R and a 1290 S on the same morning. I noticed the turn in was much easier on the 1290 - suspect the rake is similar on the two bikes, but the trail is less with the 19 inch wheel. Shame they don't sell a 1090 S in the US as I don't intend to go off-road and I don't want the 1290's electronics - sure to fail.
Excellent review, txs. Are there internment camps in Mattighofen? :-))) Probably for customers who are criticizing their product too much....They have a seperate door in the factory if you ever decide to visit.... "Mister Flinner?...this way,Sir" ;-)
I found the engine heat is not an issue if you duct tape a whole uncooked chicken to your arse at the start of a day's ride. At noon, flip the bird (I'm referring to the aforementioned chicken) and by the end of the day, solid comfort and a delicious roasted chicken dinner at the ready.
And for vegetarians they can use their wedding vegetables... Chicken is a bit lean, one could wrap bacon around the headers for a juicy breakfast.
Good video I have the 2014 s model I love it. Not sure if the air Box issue was still a problem on that year
Easiest way to check is open the airbox and wipe the inside of the stacks with a clean white cloth.
Thank you Maestro. Greatly Appreciated...
Thanks for your great review but i wonder is it better than Africa twin 2019 (not the new one)
Africa Twin: Bit overpriced for what you are getting. But it is a reliable bike, not enough power to get you in trouble, there is a reason why it is being bought.
ah, danke, genau was ich brauchte, um aufzuhören mir Gedanken um dieses Motorrad zu machen. Ich verzichte und warte bis die ''langweilige'' Tenere gebraucht etwas günstiger wird..
Actually I deserve a good hammering from you you're damn good at what you doing and you're very informative I don't know what the hell I apologize, I give credit where credit is due and I apologize you got a very sharp KTM 1190 there and it's exactly the way I want mine look to and thank you very much for such an excellent walkthrough, and I hope that you have just as good of walkthrough in the dirt putting it through its paces I've been riding since 6 years old I'm 55, I have had many bikes I was going to get the African twin but my 1190 Adventure should be in my garage by end of next week, I hope you have more videos that I can watch I'm really looking forward to this motorcycle because see you in 6 ft 3 260 lb I'm ready for it
Hello... Great Great review.. The problem of european bike is that you can hate a lot your bike than you can love it so much... I have found your review very interesting and objective.. This bike Will probably my next one, i live in France near germany and i found one of 2014 with only 3100 kms for 9100 euros.. But this purchase make me hesitated a lot.. I ve always ride japanese bike.. And leave fiability of japan bike for à ktm..... Make me affraid a little.. I know it would be give me a lot of pleasure but..... I dont understand everything when you speak about the problem of cold start due to the airbox... You say that problem is coming from the airbox of 2013-2014 models with dust Who enter in the intake ? In Europe there were a campain, their solution was to change the starter to à bigger one of 1290 superduke.. But apparently that works but not totally efficient... What do you préconise ? Thank my friend for reading ans asking.. Take care of you in this period of corona and have long life on beautyfull road
3100kms!? Very suspect. 6 years old and such low mileage. It better have an annual service record. Changing the starter would only have forced the engine to chew the sand in the engine and destroy the valves. Potential suicide. Europe is not as dusty as Australia or South Africa, but ask about the filter box issue regardless. If you find a bike with low mileage and good service history and extras, go for it. Or at least take it for test drive, switch it to sport mode and hold on tight!
If you remove the cat, you need remapping, that can solve the dead spot problem.
Made minor difference. A proper re-map would solve it sure, but for those mere mortals with a job, kids and funding issues, we have to rely on the bike automatically adjusting.
Sorry, I missed your reply a year ago! :O
Bought a 1090r :)
What foot pegs are you using? Seems low and nice!
Black Dog cycle Works. You can also try the Pivot Pegs for comfort...I am certain I made a video about them somewhere...pardon my alzheimers.
Did You try a new 1290 SA ? Would You change Your 1190 to the 1290 SA? I'm thinking about buying a new 1290 SA or BMW R1200GS but I can"t decide with one will be better for me...
The new one is impressive. But it is heavier in the top and for offroad fundies a bit more of a chore than the 1090. Suspension is luxury, so are the electronics...until something breaks. I would rather wait for the Yamaha, KTM 790 or try a Husqvarna 700, as it is lighter and better suited for offroad and mild touring.
Do you recommend these years of this bike?. I have found some here in the U.S. on eBay for decent prices
Yes, I would recommend bikes of 2014+ reason being that the dealers fixed the issues encountered with the 2013 models, e.g. airbox leaks, electronics, etc . When viewing one of these bikes, start it up and listen to valve chatter. Usually around 30,000km this occurs if the maintenance schedule was poor or the poor thing was abused.
I’d love one but....😬
Have you tried it agenst a r1200gs? If so how do they compare?
I've had an R1150GS and have a 1290 SAR. KTM is the better offroad/hooligan bike. BMW is the better all-arounder and is more refined (in general). Both fantastic machines that are excellent for all conditions touring.
I just sold my 05cbr100rr and vtx1800. Thinking of getting used BMW r1200gs this bike or Africa twin. Any recommendations
BMW: Big, heavy, comfortable and hellishly expensive when something breaks, which it will off road. Secondhand units rarely have seen any dust. HONDA: Reliable, relaxed, competent, for shorter riders a good deal. Avoid 1st release models though. KTM: Powerful, heavy, more competent off road than on, not as comfortable as the others, secondhand units will have seen off road action. Non-R version easier to live with.
...for an adventure bike to many electronics, and to many plastic parts that make tour life miserable ...motorcycles sould be simple....and easy to ride and maintain...
got one and i have no problem with electronics or plastics. 44000 kms and i travel around europe and everything is fine.
Hi!
I get the cMTC failor error now and then too on my 1190 2016 bike:/ i have to turn it of and it wont start for a while before it want to start again. Told the dealer but he didnt know. Feels like i have to hope it breaks before warranty goes out?
And there were no error codes in the computer? Best thing: Take a picture of the error. Show it to your dealer and insist that he fixes it, either flushing the system, replacing wiring or swopping out the entire unit. Remember this is your life on the line. That is what I did.
I almost wanna change it to a BMW r nine t urban. Ok that is not a adventure bike at all but it has no electric features other then ABS. Otherwise i love it, sport bike that dose adventure is perfect, but electric features that throws errors without any reason scared the shit of me
Patrick Flinner Thanks will do, everytime it has happend i got scared and tried again and again until it started up and after that I realized I missed to take a picture. Yes have to go to bottom with it this summer, am sure it will fail hard some day.
Nope on 1000km service they didnt see it.
Well at least it won't shut down the bike, so you will just go back to the good old days before digital angels... :)
Take it easy!
So now what would you consider getting since both ktm790 and T700 are out now?
790 = Too small for my frame. Made for midgets. T700 = Arriving in South Africa end of 2020. Very interested in it, as it was similar to my old 1190 in seat height, but its cheap and cheerful. Worst case: Tiger 900 Rally Pro.
@@PatrickFlinner I do like the tiger engine, but I cannot justify the price. Not too bad ergos for myself being 6'3". Yamaha would still be more rugged & reliable & cheaper.
I'm sorry if i missed it, but what about buffeting and wind noise at 60 - 120 mph?
120mph? ...ok brother lead foot.
OEM windscreen shoots wind at my chin on highest setting. As for wind noise it is do able, the 1190 is good for long distance, the exhaust note is what you will hear most of the way.
@@PatrickFlinner Wind is actually ok! I once rode it for a couple of minutes at 200 km/h (electronically limited) and if you tuck down the sound is ok but the buffeting around the body is a little bit tiring...
Great review, thanks for sharing. I just picked up my 1090 about 2 weeks ago so it is good to hear feedback from someone who's been riding a similar bike for a much longer period of time. Some of the items you mentioned are supposed to be changed for the 1090 but time will tell that. Thanks again for sharing. Sub for sub?
Hmmm, fabricate aluminum pieces to cure plastic woes? Take apart the bike, including the gas tank, so you can change the air filter? Head light wobble? Didn't mention the motor oven-like heat. If I did it over, I would not buy this bike. A new owner shouldn't need to "fix" the bike before taking it home. I have exema on my legs, and the heat physically hurts. Rottweiler air box, new slip on muffler, body part heat shields, manifold insulation, and seat heat shield, just so I can ride the thing! However, I plan a trip down the Baja, Cherry Creek AZ, around Esqudida mountain AZ, maybe the Devil's Highway that parallels the Mexican border, and up to Chaco Canyon NM. I just hope it doesn't leave me stranded. Given the slew of problems, design and materials, I now have little confidence in the bike, and KTM should be ashamed of selling a bike with out addressing these issues. Look at this video critically; jerry rigged repairs to keep the air box lid intact, and hand made brackets for the head light. You have to be a fabricator to keep it going. The kick stand is mounted to the engine, which can break off, and can even pierce the motor, $6-8K to repair. I ordered a part to move the kick stand mount to the frame. I feel I made an expensive mistake. I completely accept I made the mistake, but wish I hadn't. I will write KTM. Before I get called a pussy, consider blowing a hot air dryer on a sun burn, then we can talk.
A pussy? I've seen those things push out two kids. Ain't nothing tougher.
Back to the topic: This is why I prefer to view motorcycle reviews from Blue collar riders. Honesty, not paid for advertising. Not every bike is perfect, some require elbow grease and creativity and I believe that this is where the fun comes in...to a certain degree. I doubt the bike will strand you if you are as meticulous as you described yourself and if it does: Credit card and a sense of humour.
Lastly: Hairdryer on a sunburn? Don't give my wife any ideas here!
an adventure bike should be easy and simple...to ride and to service...in an 92 gs 100 you can service the bike...in less than one hour...thats including valve abjustment...with these new bikes it is a nightmare....
Yes. And that is why mechanics have such colorful vocabulary. BUT after doing one service it becomes easier, second nature...yeah it doesn't compare to an old KLR650.
Think I will buythe Yamaha XT 1200Z MORE RELIABLE
4 years later… what are you riding now?
A Triumph Tiger 900 Rally Pro for long distance and gravel travel and a KTM 1290 SDR for stress release.
Nice video. Im getting my 2015. Looking forward.
Do your repairs yourself. Its better to fuckup your own bike rather to pay someone to fuk it up. If you take it to an dealership then it doesn't nean the machnic knows whats he is doing. Its just an nother customers bike. Yes you must go to an dealership for warenty purposes but there is always an way. An bottle of KWV 10year brandy and an big sheep for the fridge then you are good to go.
Don't know about sheep or kwv ...but whisky and a blue wildebeest will do me.
You didn't have to hold a gun I didn't make it all the way through man I just I'm sorry man you have a lot of good information it's about presentation
You dont need to spent the 45.000 for a touratech upgrade. Hahahahaha lol right on.
So....I’ll,go with the Africa Twin lol
I'd probably nitpick that to death as well...starting with the rusting spokes, dwarven seat height, etc
lol Trump jokes always win. I have a '16 and found some of the issues continued through all model years (specifically the airbox). That said, I haven't found a bike that I would sell for (1090 included). Get to know your bike is the best advice.
Have to say that I'm kind of disappointed with KTM to see so much problems with a premium adventure bike. I know that my Transalp 600 is not a comparison in power or performance but still...its even better than the the old Africa Twin and has less thing to break on it. Why cant just they build a bike like the 1190 R with the same engine, but far less complicated in terms of electronics and design.
Amen. If I wanted to do world touring I would've opted for Yamaha 660 Tenere or stuck with my old KLR650. 1190's are great machines, but I get the feeling the more electronics they pump into the modern bikes (all manufacturers) the more Quality Control falls to the wayside.
Looks like you treat it like a road bike.
It's not my fault that the dealer insist on washing it every time it goes in for repair! There was dirt on it! I swear!
Hi Patrick, just want to hear if you can give me your email. Just want to chat about the KTMs. I bought me one and just want to hear about what did you experience with the ktm. The video is cool. I have also a few faults with my ktm.
Hope we can get in touch
Ehm (Andy)! 🤣
Patrick, praising “The Donald” puts over 60 million Harding working people in your camp! That’s a good thing. Plus you are lining us all out on the KTM just like DJT is doing with the swamp creatures.
Good luck 2U.
Schveddy5
Using the words Donald Trump, Gooch, and Erection withing seconds of each other was savage!
Come on I think that you doing a fine job with the tear down of what's the pros and cons are, even though Germany puts out Top Notch stuff ,you guys are a bunch of chronic complainers, just get on the bike and have fun you guys would complain if you got a woman that was built like a perfect 10 that couldn't talk, you would complain about something ,about that, that's the perfect woman, so I am going to find me another video that doesn't sound like a whiny Schoolboy, even when you're giving the pros, you sound like you need a handkerchief for all the tears while you're complaining, I'm going to go find something that's a little bit more objective.
common dude - sell ktm and buy bmw 1200gs and you will get a lot lot more troubles))
Thanks im not gonna buy one. Fuck it.
Sounds like you are struggling to say anything positive basically this bike is a total pain in the ass & should be avoided at all costs..
Exactly! Like being married, you have no idea why you did it, but you are stuck with it.
Human nature: You forget the good and settle on the negative too easily.
Bored guy ! change your bike and buy a chinese metal bike.
Excellent review. I have a 2014, base model (not the 'R'). I totally agree about not buying a new model when first out. I purchased my bike, new in Feb 2016, because I had a KTM 990 SMT, which I loved. Perfect bike - It did everything well - except serious touring, and I'll soon be taking the 1190 from the east to the west coast of the US, and into Canada, an 8,000 mile trip. I looked at a 2015 1190 in spring of 2015, but was looking at the full MSRP of $16,499 - about $18,000+, out-the-door, with no accessories, and I've added a bunch to my 2014, about half of which I was unaware I would need (panniers, a better seat, larger pegs, skid plate, upper and lower engine guards, an LED headlight & auxiliaries, windshield - and about $500 in more minor stuff - a total of about $3500).
I loved the SMT and should have kept it, but wanted to stay married, and although my wife doesn't know one bike from another, she can count. But I made the mistake of reading the Road Test in Cycle World. It's not designed to go fast, per se, but they reported a 10.68 quarter at 130mph. You are exactly right. It has (almost) liter super bike performance, but Adventure touring ergonomics and comfort, and state-of-the-art safety. Eighteen months after looking at the 2015, I saw mine advertised for $12,999, and got it out the door for 14. The dealer had had the bike for nearly two years and he wanted it sitting somewhere, apparently almost anywhere, other than on his showroom floor. I wish I had spent an extra thousand and bought the 2015 he also had.
I have a love/hate relationship with the bike. On the one hand, when everything is working, it is the most thrilling, euphorogasm producing, *fun* motorcycle I've ridden in 50 years. It is the prototype that explains why I ride. On the other hand, often, some small thing is not working properly - some irritating little thing is wrong - most of which I attribute to it being the model's first year. I'll bitch, bitch, bitch about it and my friends will ask, "why don't you get rid of it... get a Japanese bike?"
"ARE YOU *F**KING* CRAZY. AND NOT RIDE A KTM"
It makes me smile, too. I want to ride at every opportunity. I won't even use a car to go to the supermarket, a mile away. (I'll take the long way, making it 10 miles away.) The dealer is almost two hours away and if I have to leave it for 2 or 3 days for service, or fixing - or longer if parts are needed (nearly as I can figure, KTM stores their parts on the moon), I get claustrophobia. Just knowing it's outside, even if I don't ride that day, creates a feeling of comfortable, satisfying, freedom, and darn it, I'm just not happy when it's gone . I've never felt that way about a motorcycle.
In a couple of years the 1190 will be paid for and I'm already lusting after the 1290 Super Adventure (S)port, which KTM began importing into the US a couple of months ago. MSRP is $17999. I'll need to find a 2018 for about $16,000, out-the-door, so that it will be stay under 20, fully farkled.
Again, terrific review. Many thanks.
No, thank you for the long comment. I wouldn't change from a 1190 to a 1290, yes it's got more bling and electronics (Read: Things that go wrong) and the weight sits a bit higher up. Perhaps it's more refined, but that's where the differences end.
Thanks to my back injury I am test riding the Husqvarna 701 Enduro (2018) for fun...its so rudimentary that it makes you realize how spoilt you are on a 1190, but it also has a lot of fun behind it and a lot less weight.
