- JS8173 struggles with the poor quality slippery rail in the opencast pit for several minutes as it fights to get its loaded spoil train up the incline. These JSs don't appear to have any operational sanding equipment despite a desperate need for it. As the loco passes the pointsman's cabin, you can see the driver throw out the operating token which controls the particular branch he has come off.

Thank you. Almost every train was struggling to get out of the opencast this day. At least one train had to be double headed. It must be a combination of poor rail, loco wheels needing profiling and a lack of sanding equipment.
Fantastic video - driver did well to keep that lot moving in the right direction.

My understanding was that the sand box was in the hump between the steam dome and the stack. The three diagonal pipes (one forward and two back) feed the sand onto the track.

The scene featured in this clip can still be seen on a daily basis Alan. There are about a dozen locations in China still using steam. It's likely that Sandaoling will be one of the last to survive. There are currently about 20-25 locomotives in use on this system. I recommend a visit ASAP if you're interested in steam ... it's the absolute end of a 200 year history.

Im surprised they're backing up the hill rather than going forward, as backing up can expose the crown sheet in the boiler if the water is not kept very high.

The QJ's are just too big for this kind of short trip working. They're designed for shifting heavy loads over long distances. The JS's are just as good in this situation ...... Andy

I've thought a little more about this. In fact they have to zig-zag up the hill. I think there's slightly more uphill going forward than in reverse ... so maybe they have planned it!
I don't think they think about details like that Wesley. Don't seem to bother about sanding equipment either!

Every indication is that steam will struggle on here for another 3 maybe 4 years but in China you can never be certain. I'm hoping for a trip back there in April 2014.
It was cold cerainly but not as bad as we've become accustomed to in these parts. The wind was bitter though! As for batteries... these modern batteries are so much better than they used to be in JiTong days !!
You have to get a visa from your chinese embassy but once you're there movement around the country is quite easy. Industrial sites are actually easier to get into than in Europe although I did get asked to leave the opencast mine at Sandaoling! There are only a few places around China that are off limits to foreigners.
You guys are so lucky to go into the pit, they have banned it. The Nov trip report will be up soon on SY country.
I know we were lucky. Every piece of video I take, I understand could be the last time. These sights are disappearing from our world.

So true, Mr Jun said we're allowed anywhere but the pit, due to some A hole falling down the hill. They've chopped up the SY, the boiler is still in the workshop. They have around 20 JS locos still working but the numbers will decline soon. The best part of the 6 days i was there was a very rare cab ride.
Look up toward the top of those hills where the trains are traveling. A few years ago they were up there and slowly have dug their way down into this endless pit only to try to make their way out each day. I guess the have done it every day ever since and will continue until relieved by the next shift.....PROGRESS
Gonna need new wheels soon.

I remember you saying something about one more trip to China, possibly in November. I'm afraid such a trip is out of reach for me, but I do enjoy your videos very much. I'm glad steam lasted as long as it did in China. A few of their locomotives have found new homes here in the United States. I'm grateful for that, too.

Not only that they have one child politics, seems Chinese have one locomotive per train politics.
+Triplex5014 The Chinese will certainly do anything to save even the smallest amount of money. However I'm pleased to report that the one child policy was abandoned many years ago. My own wife is 35 years old and has a younger brother.

That's a bit of a cheap jibe:
1. With regard to the "one child" policy it never did apply to the whole population of China; even when it did apply it was enforced only in certain areas and the widespread attitude was "pay the fine and have the child" -- and it doesn't apply now anyway.
2. The use of multiple locomotives on one train is normal in North America, but historically not nearly so much in the rest of the world where trains may be much shorter and travelling for shorter distances. In many countries passenger trains may run in sets with a loco at each end with the train being driven from whichever end is pointing in the direction of travel, but that's obviously not usually a useful approach for freight trains which have a very variable composition.
Chinese railroads could show American railroads a thing or two when it comes to modern trains. No-one questions the ability of the US to make good diesel locos and employing them in varying multiples on long heavy trains is a very useful approach to long-distance freight. On the other hand, American track is usually regarded as historically of poor design and laid and maintained to very poor standards and tolerances, resulting in speeds much lower than would be achieved in many other countries. It brings to mind the story of the attempt made in the last days of the Vancouver Interurban when a diesel railcar was imported from Germany in an attempt to investigate the possibility of providing a more modern and cost-effective service -- but it kept derailing on curves, because the track gauge tolerance was so sloppy and the tires of the German railcar were narrow because they were designed to run on track installed and maintained to much tighter European tolerances.
As they are phasing out the steam, all are trying to burn out the engines to better argue deiselelectric replacements
I'm not sure that's the case here ..... they just work them hard. There are still about 6 steam locos operating here and they report they will continue until 2020 at least and, maybe, 2022. I have new videos in editing right now - look out for them appearing in the next few days. Andy
i dont know the gradient degrees but the train losses speed quickly, the thain have mo much wagons.but the adherece wheel -rail coefficient is the problem.when the slip is present,the adherence is virtually zero,and the train looses speed very quickly.And other problem is in the locomotive work,,the force applied to the wheel is alternative,,,not continuous as an electric traction engine. This causes the slip more than an electric traction motor. the loco driver in thios case may have a lot of patience.but if the train stills slipping.the solution is stop the train.release some wagons and try another time.
The real problem is that this was filmed at about minus 20 degrees celcius and the rails were very slippery with ice.
