Even after so many years have passed, I am still hurt that Ubuntu gave up on this idea
This was so ahead of its time...
more than 7 years later and this still sounds great!
it's sad this phone didn't make it :/ stillborn.
Its children did
This phone was ahead of its time
7 years later and we finally have the PinePhone and Librem 5.
It's not the edge. Nothing will ever be the edge. :(
This is actually what modern phones be like right now. This project was started too early
It is crazy that when I saw this for the first time, I couldn't believe any phone could have 128GB of storage with 4GB of RAM. Years after, my phone has 256GB of storage with addition to a 128GB of MicroSD card and a 6GB of RAM. They truly have foreseen the future. Kudos 👏👏
Why have you guys not reconfigured this project and re-launched a modular device? Not even modular, just a core CPU, sensors, ram..., and it plugs into the rest of the device that can be whatever any company makes?
Those specs!! Its as if they were designing a phone for engineers! Love Ubuntu
Ubuntu on my desktop, Ubuntu on my laptop, Ubuntu on my tablet and now Ubuntu on my phone. =)
not now.. nor soon..
Joe Mauri why not
Iris Tam it's still not available... Canonical didn't release any distro to be built on a smartphone...
I hope their ambition for 14.04 is as innovative as it seems to be for mobile right now. Not doubting them at all since I'm actually a big believer in Ubuntu and I see Mark having the right vision, now it just needs to be put in place.
this guy sounds like he worked for apple in 2010
With Unity out of the way and hardware costs are down, now's the time! Let's see this happen!!!
I absolutely uncontrollably love it! I'll try my best to support this project!
We will be supporting the campaign for sure. I wish for the best and you guys come up with 32 million or just enough to get this phone concept up and running into production.
Still sad this never took off.
It sad to know that people are not interested enough about this
***** I agree people are too blind to see features what this phone would brought.
Microsoft already did that "incredible technology". It's really unnecessary
Thing is, most people are not aware of this linux based OS. You need to remember that the majority of people are not that great with getting the solution to a simple search google problem on their Windows or Mac machine. Can't even imagine them complicating their own existence by using something like ubuntu
really a damn good approach... hats off..!
I believe so much that even today, if Ubuntu launched hardware and focused on convergence that it could succeed and it would be a “blue ocean” moment where Ubuntu would reach a mass market and a well known and trendy brand.
I would want a simultaneous launch of a Desktop, laptop, phone and tablet all running the same OS, and Ubuntu One fleshed out to be an iCloud alternative and unified account system for Ubuntu.
With the advancements in gaming on Linux over the last 10 years, the biggest real obstacle to doing this is gone. Developers already love Linux, and could probably coaxed into using Ubuntu if the hardware is nice enough. Gamers were the only market you needed to really sell on the idea, and thanks to Steam Deck, gamers have living proof of the power of Linux to play games. This is a moonshot that is worth every penny invested, especially because Canonical is profitable now. Their enterprise offerings have paid off. Now they could invest that into going for the Blue Ocean and finding the mass market.
I like to have this phone soon.
Ubuntu on a phone would be cool 8).
I like Ubuntuedge phone
Seems like Unity would be a nice interface for a phone for sure :).
I love the lag at 1:25 :D
still miss this :')
I keep coming back to this...
5:04 - is it windows 7 bar at the top?
Christian Winslett i was not arguing on where you "have to" put your windows' bar... but seen that it's a video about ubuntu edge... i would prefer designers to use blender on linux (ubuntu?) instead of windows...
Maybe they use windows 7 because they're the phone designers who use company computers. NOT THE PROGRAMMERS who use the actual Os. If you have an Os that you wanted to put on a phone, would you care if the designers use windows 7? I wouldn't. Because the designers aren't part of the ubuntu team. They're simply hired to do the designing.
John Smith if you were the head of marketing in Microsoft, would you insert a designer who works with a mac in the promotional video (of a microsoft product)?
Looks like gnome to me....
Oskar Martin view it in full screen at 720p...
I don't think CNET is a great example to use for advertising, not saying that ubuntu for mobile is bad just because CNET gave it a thmbs up, but we have to remember that CNET was the company to lost a shit ton of users when they started packaging downloads with fucking spyware.
This video was a textbook promo video I love it !!!
Thanks Mark and Canonical, you guys are my hero's. Contributed =)
Who else watch this 2018
How about 2019?
How about 2024?
😂
Now everyone wants it....where were you people when we needed you lol gahhh
I wish I knew that this was a thing back when it actually was a thing... GRR! I would have backed it...
When ubuntu phone will be fully redy on my HTC sensation xe with Pyramid?
That impressed me so much .... having the same amount of flash storage as my pc has ... awesome :D
Sounds too good to be true. And was!!
why is it shit?
Go use a Windows 10 Mobile
Sleepy's Stuff The Kickstarter failed.
@@DanteXE Ubuntu is not Windows
mostly nobody in their office actually work on Ubuntu :) I've seen only Macs and PCs
Great idea, you can see the need for such a venture.
I would like tondefinitely give this a try, this seems very cool !!!
2019 still no ubuntu edge :/
The crowd funding failed, so they dropped the project entirely.
4,5 is too small^:/
It's not, I really love the screen on my moto g. You don't need 5.5+ or 1440p, or 12mp.
That's what she said
No. It's just right.
@@George_Azeria you ever actually use a phone with any of those?
I wish I had the money to fund this project. I was so looking forward to it.
Definately supporting this project! Ubuntu #1 for ever
hey ubuntu, you could also overclock the cpu when connected as you can supply enough voltage
hmmm...would the ubuntu running on qualcomm mobile processors be capable of running native 32 bit or 64 bit applications available on the desktop versions of ubuntu, or would it have to use custom versions of the apps?
The camera is more important than it seems like they're going to make it, and the no bezel look is nice so long as it doesn't compromise screen protection and promote the likelihood of cracking the screen like the s3 and s4.
Just bought my perk! Whoo cant wait :)
Thanks for ubuntu you guys!
Are the phones free too? :)
Ineed this. Awesome specs!!!
That is so fantastic! I WANT ONE!!!
I really hope this project gets all the success it can :D
I hope you are going to repeat this campaign this year (or in some time). And make it little louder and more succesful. This time also with my fundings :-)
You need to put out the pcb info and every thing
Wow this looks truly awesome!
Thanks for being part of the biggest crowdfunding campaign ever, and look out for Ubuntu on smartphones in 2014. that is what they said on indiegogo
That's amazing ideas ! :D
Great, thanks for develop the ubuntu like that ! :D
I hope this can be taste to everyone :D
This seems like a real step forward that will are other phone makers to give that step as well. We are now seeing that many problems that have been there for years (storage, battery) have not been resolved. Now this is the chance to change that.
I was sold at it booting Android too. I assume it means it boots into Android, not just runs Android apps? I really hope this is as good as they say.
what lte frequencies does this support eg 700mhz?
When will it come in India as I'm wishing to buy? It would be too GOOD if ts water proof & dust roof!
i hope this shows major companies that ubuntu is not out of the ios race and is here to stay. and hopefully bring more compatibility in the future, this was just the opening of the massive door that can be opened with ubuntu
Does this have Miracast, IP67 rating and wireless charging. I aristocracy because they seem to mention Unibody metal the repairability score will be very low like the HTC one in case of damage and wireless charging won't be possible for the same reason. What about NFC, Miracast, microsdxc card slot for additional storage and WiDi capability? Does it support exfat, ntfs storage? What about codec support for audio and video? Removable battery? Accessories like flip cases that replace ORIGINAL back
I am in the exact same position... I might get one (or the equivalent) when I actually need a new one
is it possible to see Window and Mac OS X follow Ubuntu to come out the same concept phone for the up coming years ?
Just looked it up, seems legit. Which desktop environment are you using?
this is it, love the idea and of course sense of freedom!
Mark, once again, you make us proud! To infinity and beyond :D
it's open source... so yes. You can do whatever you want with it, everything is open. There is a restore option to bring it back to working form should something go amis.
Looks good on the surface but the 2 major questions that come to mind
1.) When they say they want a "premium" "outlet" to the mobile phone industry.
Does that mean they are actually trying to help make that happen? & how?
2.) R they open to using old technologies as well as newer ones? I want backwards compatibility to communicate with older handsets/pda's for instance IRDA, MANY sensors that are currently being produced & even "modularity"
Would also like to see solar, wind & knetic tech used
i luv ubuntu....... i regret why i purchased note2 and s4...... will definitely buy this nxt year
I like the design, I would like to test it
Congratulations Ubuntu. The ending of this video gave me goosebumps. Do want.
Looks very promising. I wish you all the luck in the world!
Check out what OS the guy uses in 5:02. I think it's Windows 7.
Now that is the only thing that stops me from using Linux every time I actually try it - an inability to use best known and latest graphic and CAD software...
But I still have a hope.
Great idea, nice presentation, wonderful points - I believe you're on to something. Need a call to action at the end, though, what do you want and what do we get? URL?
Please, tell me,what kind of keyboard on the ~1,24 minute?
can anyone tell which software is being used at 4:53?
Needs a better camera, hope it has AWS support. I'd prefer a bigger screen and resolution.
This sounds really great!
Indeed. I wish i could fund this as well. it looks pretty damn incredible.
Would be great with a fingerprinter sensor for security unlocking. I think this will be needed by the time this phone comes out.
There is a possibility to order?
Are the specs you guys want to put on the ubuntu edge really going to be on such a small thing?
It looks gorgeous
Isn't sapphire-crystal brittle? I mean, although it's hard and scratch resistance, it still brittle.
love the prospects
awwwww how cute the little one is flexing his frail response
I want it too!!
im actually really looking forward to this
Hope they reach there goal for Ubuntu Edge... Best of wishes guys....
Give it another try! I only foud out after the project ran out of time. I'm even willing to invest in the project myself. I want one of these phones. Push this fund raising project again and make sure people all over the world are aware so that they can sign up for it! I want to be part of this!
So will the app store be that of Ubuntu or Android?
I can't wait until Ubuntu comes out for T-Mobile USA. The phone's UI looks sick!
Loving how most of that office are on Macs.
I didn't actually miss iOS and Windows, so this news makes it even better.
All info is on their Indiegogo page.
I wish I had found out about this sooner
If I was an earner, and not a student, I would have definitely contributed to this project. I hope that it doesn't dishearten them to try it again sometime.
Is there a music track on 5:43 ? Where can I download it? :)
Qual é o software de modelagem exibido aos 5:02?
Whats the 3d software he is using?
i love the design kinda based on the ubuntu font XD
Will this be available like as a buyable phone,, because if it is im sold!
This could be a real innovation! Have you ever thinked about the fact that CPUs embedded in smartphones are becoming more and more powerful ? This means that "convergence" is the most natural thing that will happend in near future. I am happy to have donated some money to this project.
