The last cardinal tetras I bought a few months ago were $100 for 50 fish and half that cost was for shipping. The margins for these fish can't be that great. That it takes all this for fish that basically are $1 wholesale is fascinating. With how large and how far the aquarium trade has come, it's surprising that any Cardinal Tetras still has to be wild caught. I would have thought they could all be captive breed by now.

The fascinating part is that it's more cost effective for the fish trade to catch and transport them from across the world than just locally breed them.

To anyone who watched the earlier version of this; the first person who can remember what the silly little error was - I will send you a free Hoodie!
And thanks for clicking if this is the second time you've seen this video today..... lol

What a wonderful idea for a video and well executed, I didn't see the first video so I don't know the mistake but I really enjoyed this one, great job! 👍

@@AK-xp6ls Glad you enjoyed it. Tbh, it was probably one of those errors that most people wouldn't notice. But I would always know.... lol. I won't say for now in case there was a very eagle eyed viewer at lunchtime!

Good stuff, didn't spot your error, but one of the cardinals in the tank with Anubias and Java Fern (around 9.17, though there are several appearances) is seriously diseased and needs culled. Sorry to spot that.
The bigger picture, controlled harvesting from the wild probably helps preserve the environment, unlike slash and burn for soy bean farming.
Birchwood Aquatics near Swanley, still put oxygen in bags, a common thing when I was a kid in the late 1960s but sadly Birchwood is the only shop in the last 20 or 30 years that I have found still doing it, makes transport in a poly box for four or so hours across several counties much more achievable.

Oh gosh, I didn't spot that. It was stock footage too, you'd think they'd want to showcase healthier fish..... 😕

When feeding my corydoras axelrodi tonight the 'penny dropped', age you see, my mind works slowly and oddly, but then when a young teenager in Northern Ireland at Bangor Aquatic Breeders' Society in the 1970s, at my club, we called them hyphessobrycon not paracheirodon. Names change and we all make slips of the 'tongue/mind'.@@AquariumShed

"Sold for just a pound or two". Here in NZ their $10.50 each, that's over 5 pounds each. But I think a lot of the fish here are bred locally. I know that our wonderful Customs and Department of Conservation cull I believe, up to 75% of imported fish for "testing". We are somewhat limited in the range of Tropical fish we can get here. It's better than it was, but we still can't have freshwater shrimp of any kind.

Wow, that is crazy! I knew it was a bit more restrictive in NZ and Oz, but didn't realise they were culling like that... Bleak!

that is insane. i live in singapore (to be fair, we breed a fair number of fish around here) and cardinal tetras never cost anything over the equivalent of USD$1
