Hi from the Rocky Mountains, man I am sure glad i found your video! It was just what I needed to help me get my Trail boss back running. My clutch looks a bit different but same theory. I bought the atv already taken apart Thanks and great job ER
Thank you so much for uploading this I've just acquired a polaris magnum 425 with this style of hub and was totally dumb founded on how they work but now i completely understand them and now can figure out why my one hub ain't locking
Thank you Bud. My tabs are worn off and now that the book doesn't explain what to look for , You answered all my Questions. My tabs are worn off. Off th Polaris to get two new ones tomorrow while I have both clutches out . Thanks again.
I am going with the others and say first one to truly explain how this thing works great info. now I can stop scratching my head and fix this Thing Thank You ! P.S You are The MAN!
Gr8 video bro. I recently bought a Polaris Sportsman 500 4x4 and my left front wheel hub clutch is engaging even when AWD is turned off. I think I will disassemble the hub, bearing, and clutch and see if my Hilliard clutch or Armature plate is damaged. I had an idea how Polaris AWD worked but your video made it very clear. Keep the how to vids coming man! I think the Polaris 4wd system is great if you keep your hubs properly lubed and replace worn parts before they cause extreme damage. :)
Pretty damn good video, considering you said you're not a mechanic. I'm an Automotive Technician and I can say I thought you explained this well. Good video. Would like to see more.
That's very helpful, thanks to you explaining everything I believe that I can formulate a plan to bypass the electric magnet and just have analog full-time drive on mine 😀, I have a 1997 Polaris Magnum 425 6x6, so I'll get back to you it my plan works 😅.
Real good video!!!!!!! I agree with Francis, great explanation, i have a problem with my own 500ho, it will be interesting to do my own troubleshooting
Thanks for the explanation of the armature plate which acts as a brake to the outer half of the Hilliard clutch , did not know what that was called either THANKS , Now I can see what happens ! With the splines on the axle engaged in the splines of the inner part of the clutch, (the big nut ) & the outer half not rotating freely, the big roller bearings will be forced out against the hub , forcing 4x4 THANKS
Proud of you man for figuring that all out ! Also if that plate is distorted in any way it is garbage ! In other vids they tell you to place a straight edge across where the axle comes out of & where the armature plate comes up against should be .001” , if more than that it will not work properly
I've done my own experiment with this clutch. If you want to see in in action, just put a big bushing where the hub goes (that giant nut in the middle of the clutch, if you have an older one is just perfect for that). So without the hub installed you will see the difference when in 2x4 and 4x4 and be able to film it.
I believe the reason the magnet assembly needs to have a good ground is to eliminate the problem where the armature plate becomes magnetized when not asked to be (I.e awd switch not on) this gives the plate a complete circuit to ground. Great Video, garage is a mess
Great vid and explanation. My O8 Scrambler 500 is in pieces now to address a bad hub wobble. Im guessing the hub bearings but they dont look all that bad. I'll swap and see
I'm having the same problem with my 2002 Polaris 400. Bought it used and someone before me has all the wireing all screwed up. Was wonder how it worked. Just wondering if i can wire the clutches directly to a switch. Dont think the 4 WD switch is working. Thanks for sharing and making it easy to understand
Any vids on pulling the bendix/starter drive?...I have a 96 400 xplorer and the estarts not working so I have the recoil housing off but can't get the bendix out. Do you have any vidoes on hooking up the throttle cable?....mine sticks so I have to do that to
Hi I just seen this I just got one but its a 400 and when I put it into 4x4 one tire will move and the other will not. I am going to ck this out because the rubber boot behind it is gone that is on the drive axle. I hope there is not much to it.
Good video. This is going,to help me because I just picked up a 97 4x4 and it's only 3 wheel drive. I bet the bad part is the plate that locks it in. Thanks
I’m still lost on it. My 400 scrambler 2 stroke started working in 3 wheel drive yesterday. I found my cv boot was cut open and it was exposed to mud and water. So I dunno if it just needs a new axle Or the hub parts are damaged ?
you figure it out I only have 3 wheels turning on my polaris 500.Tore it down and found the armature plate pretty bent up put a new one in and still have only the same 3 wheels turning
andycel schneider I haven’t tore into mine yet. But if your plate is good and everything looks good you need to check the current in the wiring with a meter. No current no wheel turn
I sure don't man...sorry...I've got the 4 wheeler at my folks...when I get it back next time maybe I'll do a vid of the throttle cable hook up...not hard at all though.
Most of the problems with this system are... neglect of service of the hubs. Dead magnet or bad connection to the magnet. Or messed up armature plate tabs.
det643 I honestly don't remember. it's been a while. I'll have to see if I can dig the PDF file. I should have the entire repair manual if you want it. Shoot me your email or something
Great explanation of how the hilliard clutch works. Thanks! I'm glad I'm not the only guy that has a crazy messy shop when I'm working on something.
First person that could explain the functionning of the clutch. Thanks mate. It helped when you said the armature plate worked as a brake. cheers.
just helping out where I can...glad it did you some good!
Best explanation so far. Thanks
This is an awesome explanation! Thanks so much for this, made it really simple repairing my 04s 4x4 system, keep up the great videos!

I just got a scrambler 500 and this was very helpful, thanks!
Dude thanks for taking the time to video this. Very informative.
Thank you so much for uploading this I've just acquired a polaris magnum 425 with this style of hub and was totally dumb founded on how they work but now i completely understand them and now can figure out why my one hub ain't locking
excellent treatise... I've always kinda wondered how that all worked. You explained it perfectly. :)
Thanks for the explanation on this hub design. Now I get how it works!
Thank you Bud. My tabs are worn off and now that the book doesn't explain what to look for , You answered all my Questions. My tabs are worn off. Off th Polaris to get two new ones tomorrow while I have both clutches out . Thanks again.

Thanks for the information. I am going to check this out as I have the problem of one of my front wheels not turning in AWD.
That was the best explanation thankyou !!
Awesome job explaining 💯
Thx. Really helpful. I'll take mine apart and see if I can figure out the problem. I'll be back to ask you some questions if you don't mind
Very good explanation - thank you!
Great video man!
Thanks for making it make sense.
hey thanks for the video, it helped me to fix my sons polaris 4 wheel drive
Thank you
Thanks, the centrifugal forced clutch explains the on-demand AWD too.
Real good video!!!!!!! I agree with Francis, great explanation, i have a problem with my own 500ho, it will be interesting to do my own troubleshooting
Thanks mate. I was very confused about it.
sure thing. I haven't rode in quite a while. Time to get back to it.
Thanks for the explanation of the armature plate which acts as a brake to the outer half of the Hilliard clutch , did not know what that was called either THANKS , Now I can see what happens ! Great dude! Helped me a lot. You da bomb!
Thanks man, very helpful!
Great video bro....
Thanks buddy nice video

Great video
Thanks, really helpful.
Dude thank you. I found a broken wire!!
Great explanation!!!!
Great explanation.....
awsome. thank you. very helpful.
very helpful thank you sir
This this really helped
Helped me out. Thanks.
Will Robinson I just wish I had time to ride it anymore!!

Awesome.
Good video. I took mine apart lastnight and found my armature plates are bent in a concave shape. I'm assuming that's my problem, fingers crossed
Any vids on pulling the bendix/starter drive?...I have a 96 400 xplorer and the estarts not working so I have the recoil housing off but can't get the bendix out.
Do you have any vidoes on hooking up the throttle cable?....mine sticks so I have to do that to
yea I couldn't find many videos explaining it and I like to fix my own stuff (when I know what I'm doing!)
my magnet does not seem to have enough pull to hold it in place? any ideas?
Thank you sir

Nice....You're Welcome
Good video. This is going,to help me because I just picked up a 97 4x4 and it's only 3 wheel drive. I bet the bad part is the plate that locks it in. Thanks
+Robert Remley I also have 3 wheel drive, Robert. My front right wheel is not turning. Did this work for you?
+John Horan no I had wires hooked up wrong on the wiring panel.
I’m getting power to the magnet but hub will not lock... has some resistance but will not lock fully
it was a good vidieo, is there any way I can make it full Time 4x4
I’m still lost on it. My 400 scrambler 2 stroke started working in 3 wheel drive yesterday. I found my cv boot was cut open and it was exposed to mud and water. So I dunno if it just needs a new axle
Or the hub parts are damaged ?

I think i put the armiture plate backwards

What was setting on the torque for the nut?

good explanation of how this system works, What a terrible design though.
great info but got motion sick from watching this...haha
I can't watch this: camera moving too much too fast. exiting out. Thank you for the effort, though.
